I believe the great seal buttons with the extension rings were used on the heavy overcoats.

Yes, they did have some thick, wool coats back in the day. Thanks for the feedback! HH

Nice spot you got there! Glad they cut the grass so you could get in there and save some relics! I've seen the loops on the Great Seal buttons before. If my memory serves me correctly they were used primarily between the wars and held the buttons onto the uniform. It made the uniforms easy to clean because the buttons were easily removed. Thanks for sharing and HH, Dave.

Yes the coats must have had button holes sewn in like our modern dress uniforms so the buttons could be removed for cleaning or when they get damaged - That block I looks like a tin back local manufacture

I have heard the buttons with the rings like that were spare buttons attached to the inside of the coat. Also I have some Augusta Arsenal bullets very similar to your 3 ringer. Excellent finds!!!
@tannerb15587 жыл бұрын
The wire is used to hold the button onto the coat. You push the shank through a small hole in the coat and secure it on the other side with the wire. It makes changing unserviceable buttons field expedient. It's still used on Marine Corps dress blues today.

Another great hunt Matt! We're on a similar old homesite, digging a few Minie balls and old lead, and a few eagle buttons, but luckily only 2 pulltabs after about 20 hours of hunting, but shotgun shell heads and tiny rivets are making up for it :-) Congrats on the gorgeous Block I button!! Best wishes, Chris

When you say shotgun headstamps where ringing up 70-71, are you running ID normalization on? Headstamps usually hit 59-63 on my Deus (with V4 firmware and normalization on). They usually fall right in the nickel range for me. I want one of those block "I" buttons, and those wired buttons were nice but bizarre. Great finds!
@TarheelDiggin7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm running with ID Norm on. Been using CTTodd's relic program lately. VDI's seem to be higher across the board for some reason. That's OK though, I'm getting used to it. Thanks for the feedback! HH

How do you find the old home sites like this?
@TarheelDiggin7 жыл бұрын
I did a video about researching for these old home sites. It was uploaded in Feb of 2015 - called, "My Favorite Research Websites Revealed!" I still use those websites today, but the best research is done with the coil to the soil. HH!
