I don't think any Nightwish fans will be upset about your statement. Epica is absolutely insanely good as a band. And both bands have drifted very far apart in styles, so there is no real direct competition. Life-long Nightwish fan, starting with the demos in 1997, but I gotta say, Epica has been, and going from their newly released song, will be for quite some time be one of my favorite bands too. And yes, I second the other commenters: "Epica - Design your Universe @ Retrospect"

I agree. I don't think direct comparisons can be made between two such excellent bands. Well, they're more than just bands. The chemistry between the members of both is clear. Neither phones a performance in, and they're friends away from the stage. Nightwish will always be my favourite, but I love what Epica do. 👍♥️

I've yet to meet Nightwish fans who aren't fans of Epica and vice-versa. These two are top tier symphonic metal bands with different approaches and sounds. We may have preferences but it would be stupid to not appreciate the musicianship and work that goes into both bands' work.

Dude, Epica is incredible and you’re going to have one hell of a ride. This song is from their 2nd album released in 2005 and you can imagine how they evolved since then. Some facts for you: 1. The harsh vocals where done by Mark Jansen (not related) he is both the co-founder of After Forever and the founder of Epica. He also has another band called MaYan. 2. The keyboard player Coen Janssen (als not related, and yes his last name is with a double s) has his keyboard on a platform on wheels connected to a U shaped rail system that goes behind the drums from side to side. The other keys he uses (not in the video) is a curved one he can wear around his wast.

I know there's a video out there of each band member talking about their instruments and set-up. The keyboard player shows the special developed stage track for his keyboard and how he controls the backing track during the performance (quite a stack of computers he actually controls). The drummer talks about his kit and how he manages to get those ridiculously fast base beats (he "cheats"; there's some kind of trigger involved). The guitar players talk about their Ibanez, Les Paul, and Dingwall for the bass player. It's not a long video but very informative. I tried to find it for you but couldn't without watching a shitload of other interviews

I ve done probably 80 metal concert in my life but this specific Consign to Oblivion is without no hesitation in my top 3 ever (with du Hast and Full Moon madness of moonspell). I went to their gig like 9-10 years ago. I was early and I was on the very back before even the warm up band started. Ariën came from a random door and I just froze since I used to play drums for ages and he was one of my heroes. He had the widest smile and said "Hi!" to me. I felt absurd even if it was just a little thing. Later on I noticed he was watching the warm up band's drummer like a hawk (from the backstage). I don't even remember who they were, but he was enjoying the show a lot. The drummer wasn't even in the same league, but he clearly enjoyed and respected him. Says a lot about a person.

If that friend of yours is convinced keyboard players can't be rockstars, I'm sure they'll say the same about chellists, violinists or flutists? In that case you should definitely show them some live performances of Ayreon. Maaike Peterse (chello), Ben Mathot (violin) and Jeroen Goossens (flutes etc.) do an outstanding job rocking out during those performances. Good examples would be "Day Sixteen: Loser" or "Age of Shadows", both from the Ayreon Universe concert.

Epica is amazing, but there are more great Dutch metalbands. You should definitly check out "Dear Mother" With their debut album "Bulletproof". They are a new dutch metalband formed by ex-Delain guitarist Merel Bechtold and ex-Delain drummer Joey de Boer. They teamed up with David "Pear" Hruska as their vocalist. Its realy worthwhile! I recently found them and bought the album right away, they're incredible!

For your friend : people playing classical intruments and people wrinting music for classical intruments (ex : Bach, Beethoven, etc.) were making metal centuries before the appearance of electricity. Just saying. ^^

I don't think that either Nightwish or Epica are "better" then the other, but they are quite different... Epica really pushes the contrast between high angelic vocals and grunting metal, while Nightwish incorporates much more folky elements, and is more melodic and less extreme (in general), but both are great...
