Unfortunately, it's a bit more complicated than just "bad circumstances." To put it into perspective for anyone who doesn't know, the "killing fields" Monsoon mentioned were basically execution sites where the Khmer Rouge would slaughter Cambodian citizens by the masses. They killed so many people that they often brought pickaxes with them to save bullets. Monsoon witnessed that firsthand, seemingly at a young age. It's no wonder he's so messed up and apathetic.
