Not to mention; the tutorial boss, Metal Gear Ray, is a boss that last time we saw it, Snake needed to use Rex to take it on. The last time Raiden fought one, he did it alongside Solidus with copious rocket launchers. Here though, he takes it out singlehandedly, on foot, with a sword.

This is the first boss game in the track. So picture yourself as Raiden fighting a souped up version of Metal Gear RAY in the prologue to a dynamic instrumental version of this theme. You take out its armor piece by piece, dodging its tail swings, lasers, blocking bullets with your sword etc. You wear it down little by little, and then, towards the end of the fight you get a QTE where RAY swings its bladed arm at you and you need to block it with your sword. At the moment the blades clash the vocals kick in with "RULES OF NATURRRRRE!" You then proceed to grab RAY's arm, *throw the entire thing into the fucking air*, jump up after it and then proceed to slice the entire thing into ribbons. The Metal Gear comes crashing down in neat slices. It's absolutely fucking ridiculous. The fight sets the tone for MGR and the music and the way it's dynamically handled and the vocals always kick in at that moment is brilliant and just feels over the top badass. The song is decent on its own but experiencing it in-game for the first time hits harder and is the reason why it reached its memetic status among the fanbase.

In case no one said yet, but "Rules of Nature" is MG Ray's theme, and he's the first boss. To us, the players, MG Ray is the best weapon ever made, even in MGS4 Ray is still the best weapon. So he's the apex predator of warfare. But in this boss fight, as the lyrics says, Ray became "A predator on the verge of death", because Raiden is the new apex predator, and the time for the giant metal gears come to an end, the new predators are the cyborgs, with raiden being the new best. "The time has come to an end Yeah, this is what nature planned Being tracked by a starving beast Looking for it's daily feast A predator on the verge of death Close to its last breath Getting close to its last breath" And now Ray is the Prey.

Also yeah, the boss tracks do actually have to do with the game and the story, but they're usually more character-based narratives and the vocals often reflect their clash happening with Raiden in the moment. Rules of Nature has themes about how Metal Gear RAY is the predator to Raiden's prey, but shows that the prey can still win through cunning. There are some other themes and interpretations in there too, such as how both Raiden's cybernetics at this point of the game are outdated because of new cyborg tech, and so too are the unmanned gears. Once you play the game, I'd recommend looking up the lyrics for some of the tracks that interest you!

a lot of these songs actually have Demo versions of them without a lot of the "electronic" feel, some with different singers even, i'm pretty sure that's because Maniac Agenda came in later in development and basically remixed the boss songs to what they are now. the best example of the difference between the demo and finished versions is Jetstream Sam's theme The Only Thing I Know For Real, it's definitely a Demo Version, but i'd say the imperfections on that version of the song actually makes it fit Sam's character way better than the finished version, since he's the only boss you fight that is almost completely human with only his right arm being cybernetic, the lack of that "digital-ness" ends up working pretty well.

Hearing the MGR:R soundtrack in isolation is pretty great; it's powerful, recognizable, and memorable. It's also like being shown an amazing cake, with fancy frosting and a message on top that reads "Let them have cake", and having hundreds of thousands of people tell you it's the best tasting cake they ever had, but not getting to taste it yourself. The gameplay brings everything together when its in your hands, with most of the songs starting off as instrumentals, with the lyrics dropping in at the hype moments, when the boss is low on health or starting up a new phase. Most of the themes that play during the levels have an 'undertone' variation that plays when out of combat, that seamlessly morphs into an intense, full instrumental or lyrical version when you draw your sword to fight. The boss themes also align with something about the boss they're paired with; their emotional state, their place in the world, or (like Sundowner's theme) an almost careless and blissful playing-along with the course of nature. As far as the creative and dynamic morphing of the songs between their different versions goes (all the boss themes also have an 'undertone' version, which plays every time you enter Blade Mode for precision cutting, in addition to the instrumental and lyrical versions), I honestly don't think there's any other game out there that does it quite as well as MGR:R. I vividly remember my first playthrough of the game; each new song I got to, I was commenting to myself, 'Dang, this is really great. What a soundtrack!' And then I got to Monsoon, and it all finally clicked in my mind. That intro riff played, and I instantly grew a huge grin and practically shouted "Let's go!!" Leading up to that point, letting myself feel invested in the story, and looking at this guy who seemed like he was the worst possible opponent for a swordfighter, suddenly all that tension was flipped completely around by the first few notes of Stains of Time, and I went from apprehensive to pumped up and ready to go harder, faster, and stronger, to climb as high as I needed to in order to win. An instant turn-around from 'is this even possible?' to 'of course it's possible, watch this!' I don't think I've ever had a moment like that, so tied to the music of a soundtrack, in any other game. I'll never forget it. And yeah, I guess it's fair to call the genre of this game "Revengeance", but that's even more noticeable when you play the game, and hear (and feel) all the nuance of moment-to-moment action and reaction. MGR:R isn't for everyone, it's true, and time hasn't been kind to the more serious story beats (what with 'meme culture' becoming something completely different in the nine years since this game came out), but I can't recommend playing it enough to anyone who enjoys the music from the game.

My personal favorite is I'm My Own Master Now, there are definitely more enjoyable songs than this one. The thing with this particular track though is it solidifies your status as a badass in this game, and it prepares you for what's to come. Through it you learn that the game's music changes dynamically based on what phase of the fight you're on. The music builds in intensity, adds vocals and then the most intense part of the song comes in when you finish off the boss in an epic QTE. It's pure madness and I can't help but love it. I recommend the Spirit Of The Wolf Mix here on youtube for this song, as it's got a similar flow than the actual game, what with the gradual layering and such. The youtube channel MonochromiumLive has other similar mixes for MGR songs.

To be quite honest... no, it definitely doesn't deserve it. Don't ever let anybody say Rules of Nature is a bad song, but out of all of the boss tracks in MGRR it is easily the worst one. Things like it being the first boss song in the game, the scripted moment where the chorus cuts in, the context of it being against a Metal Gear Ray etc. really helped it stand out. It was only in this most recent resurgence of the game nine years after its release that people on the internet finally, FINALLY started quoting more songs from the game than just Rules of Nature. ...I spent too many years being too salty that people were quoting RUUULES OF NAATUUUURE while all the rest of the songs just kinda sat there being excellent but seemingly forgotten. When songs like The Only Way I Know For Real, A Stranger I Remain, The Stains of Time, Red Sun, Collective Consciousness, It Has To Be This Way were all in the exact same game, Rules of Nature should not have ended up being the most iconic one.

It is one of the most blood pumping, intense, hype experiences I've had in a game. And the wild thing about the game is that it doesn't shy away from the political drama that MGS is known for. After the Patriots are dealt with, Rising focuses on the chaotic power struggles going on to fill the power vacuum. Also a bit of trivia for this vocalist. The vocalist here has done voice work in FF14, and - if I'm remembering correctly anyway - is the same vocalist in To The Edge and a few other themes.

You asked for the meaning of the titles? There actually are: Rules of nature: It talks about how metal gear ray and metal gears in general are a weapon of the past, and that they must adapt and evolve to match the power of the cyborgs Red sun: "Res sun" is the way the japanese (i think) refer to the sun in the morning after a masacer, which fits with the enemie in the song, since hes a sadistic coward that uses machetes and sccisors The stains of time: I dont know if the title has a connection to anythingh, but the song talks about how the boss sacrified his body and humanity for better cybernetic enhastments and when he realices that, it will hunt him until he dies The only thingh i know for real: This song talks about hoe Jetstream Sam has forgotten even his own name in the battlefield, fighting for reasons that he doesnt understand and causes he doesnt belive in, and that the only thingh he know is that there will be a bloodshed It has to be this way: This one talks about how the final boss and raiden share ideals, and that they are opposite sides of the same coin, but that by this point, the only way left is figthing to the death This is just what i have heard and a little bit of my own interpretacion, if anyone sees a mistake, i will be happy of hearing it. Tets put it pretty well when it comes to why the song went super viral. So instead I'll answer the question of their context. The genius of these songs is that if you don't really pay attention to lyrics and just play the game, they get you jacked up and adrenaline and hyped up to just "go apeshit" with violence as you kind of put it. They almost kind of make you forget that you're playing a game and inserting inputs into it and make you totally immersed into the moment. But if you actually do listen to the lyrics, they have a lot of meaning in the game. They either reflect the ideology of the boss you are fighting. Why they do what they do, or why they are fighting, etc. Or they reflect the relationship between Raiden (the MC) and the boss. If you want a MGR song with very blatant, heavy-handed and hard to miss lyrics, then try "Collective Consciousness".

The songs dynamically add and remove tracks according to the situation in the game, sort of like Nier. It's why the version of The Only Thing I Know for Real that you listened to started with an off vocal loop, as opposed to this mix, which started out full throttle.

Now all we need is "collective consciousness" "I'm my own master now" and "stranger I remain"

funny part is, this is basically still in the tutorial area of the game, right at the very beginning you open with a bossfight

At this point it's impossible to not think of this song when you see a small/weak thing fight back and winning agains't something much bigger and stronger than itself (like an ant lifting a house or something).

Why do ppl like this? Simple "RULES OF NATURE!"

Ken Ashcorp has a really neat acoustic cover of this one :D There should be more just plain acoustic covers of this OST.

Great reaction. I don't know if you've listened to Collective Consciousness yet, but it's another fan favorite from this game.

My favourite song from MGR has to be The Hot Wind Blowing, I'd love it if you could react to it, it's so good !

The tracks ingame have much less loop in them, they usually run once without the lyrics, and then again with lyrics Or the lyrics kick in at a certain parts of the boss fight.

These will all hit stronger in the game because what Platinum Games did for MGR and Nier Automata is double down super hard on adaptive music, so even though the track is kinda short it doesn't feel like it in the game, you only get the music climaxing when there is an actual climax happening on screen.

Here's to hoping that you have A Stranger I Remain queued up for the future, it's the biggest banger in the whole game imho

Weirdly was getting an early 2000's The Cult vibe from the vocals. Just for a few moments at the start.

There are few similar songs to the MGR:R soundtrack. For example: Celldweller - Good L_ck (Yo_'re F_cked) The genre of the soundtrack can be described as "Epic electronic punk rock" :)

I REALLY recommend you take a look at both The Hot Wind Is Blowing (Khamsin’s Boss Theme) and I’m My Own Master Now (Bladewolf’s Boss Theme)

If you're looking for a track from MGR that's structured like a more traditional song, I recommend "The War Still Rages Within", which is the game's credits song and it is PHENOMENAL.
