This title menu gets you feeling the Metal Gear Solid 2 darkness right off the bat with its eerie industrial sound. Nothing is as it seems, you don't play as Solid for the rest of the game after the Tanker, things progressively get worse and the true bad guys win partly because of YOUR fuckups. It sounds nihilistic and pointless, but the game handles this in a responsible way that gets you sympathising with everyone involved and the ending works in delivering its social and post-modern commentary. Oh, and it's still the best in the series, no matter what Snake Eater and Metal Gear Rising fans say (or at least, my personal favourite).

I had the same problem. My issue wasn't the gameplay however, it was the overload of cutscenes and dialogue. By the time I was starting to really see the appeal, my emulator crashed. I'm so glad this collection was announced very quickly after this.

Out of all the forms of literature, games, movies, and television that aim to subvert the expectations of the audience, I can safely say that Metal Gear Solid 2 is the perfect form of Post-Modernism. A game that fools the player into thinking they are going to play as Snake to the existence of the Patriots, to the forms of Nihilism, and finally a message of hope in the end. It is the only form of post-modernism I think that has ever succeeded in appealing a wide audience as time has gone on. I despise post-modernism but MGS2 is the clear exception to that rule and it still remains my favorite entry of the series. Never will a game like this ever return in my lifetime. I’m just glad to have witnessed it and played it.

I remember playing this in elementary school and having my fuckin mind blown away. Certain games really expand your mind and make you think for yourself. FF10 also blew me away around the same time.

Plus, all the DLC's, you never have the feeling that you've got the complete package. And it's mostly focused on online these days, which tends to be less "epic" than these orchestrated masterpieces. Don't me wrong, these still exist and you can have plenty of fun in online too, but its just not the same.

The game is almost prophetic in how it describes the future, it has aged extremely well. The final codec conversation is genuinely terrifying to listen to in 2021 because of how right it is. Personally I think it's way better than MGS1, this game is what cemented Kojima as a legend.

It's gonna be hard to truly appreciate it with 2023 lenses. I have a similar experience with Ocarina of Time. People my age swear up and down it's the G.O.A.T., but I get bored in the Deku Tree (even with the 3DS remake) and move on to other stuff every time. that was the point , in the promotional art , advertisement and more , snake was the only one shown off , instead of raiden making people believe you’re gonna play as him for the whole game . only for it to be raiden , someone who was never mentioned beforehand . It tackles the whole concept of false information very well which is the common theme with mgs2
