Not really, because the split/Venom Snake's being STILL contribute to Big Boss's status as a tragic anti-hero. He did to Venom Snake what the U.S Government did to The Boss. He did the SAME THING that made him turn away from his country and essentially become the man he did. His relationship with Solid Snake still holds up because Snake _did_ destroy his Outer Heaven vision(even though Venom Snake implemented it, the idea was Big Boss'), and then again when he destroyed Zanzibar Land. Big Boss had essentially achieved what he'd been striving for since 1970, and Solid Snake destroyed it _all._ And, in the end, at The Boss's grave, he realized that he'd been wrong about her vision for all this time. For 50 years he fought, killed, and bled for a completely incorrect interpretation of The Boss's will, and died with nothing, having wrought untold destruction on the world through the development of Metal Gears. It's tragic all the way.

The Venom retcon has serves no purpose other than to 1. make sense of a previous retcon where Gray Fox was taken prisoner in Outer Heaven and 2 subject us to Kojimas pretentious artistic masturbation at the expense of our trust in him for the second time in his career. Ever since Portable ops we have been promised something Kojima was supposed to FINALLY deliver with MGS5 and instead he turns round and does a bait and switch again. How there are people who feel this is worth defending baffles me.

@coltonsin64 Gotta agree with you here, except if I am remembering right Big Boss didn't really have any stake in Venom Snakes outer heaven. It is implied at the end of MGSV that Venom Snake and Miller created Outer Heaven to spite Big Boss due to the fact that he essentially as you said gave them the same treatment the US government gave The Boss. Big Boss had no stake in the Outer Heaven from MG1 so he sent Solid Snake to destroy it and kill Venom Snake so that he could bring in the 'Real' Outer Heaven. As I finished the above paragraph I realised who this was. Kept you waiting, huh. Padwan.

Am I the only person who saw Big Boss as the true protagonist of the series. I know David was who we were first introduced to, but not counting MG1 and 4, we only controlled him for two whole games and the beginning of 2. Boss has been the focus of the story all throughout the series in some way shape or form. He has also been through more shit than Solid Snake.

Solid Snake, the guy who had to kill his father and commander, then burn him alive, as well as killing his best friend in combat, only to find him again as an undead cyborg ninja, and then proceded to fight his own twin for a decade, while dying from a virus and his own aging that left him an old man in his early forties... Big Boss had to kill The Boss and he never recovered. Solid went through that at 23 years old, and became a better man for it.

Big Boss is the true anti-hero protagonist, someone who cared little for being branded the world's greatest threat if it meant doing what was right and for the values he believed in: Freedom. Solid was born a puppet to Cipher's Patriots AI just like Raiden and Liquid (this one broke loose only because of his childish disdain against authority figures), the first two had only grown disillusioned after learning about how different the truths were in person, about how Big Boss and his followers were allegedly the worst evildoers whose ultimate goal was to destroy what made the world order which Cipher governs.

The main theme being played a key higher carries even more punch than the original; the highs and hopefuls are more triumphant and the darks and lows are even more intense and powerful; really evokes a hero’s entrance very well. I would love to make a final game. It would be a remake of the original “Metal Gear” and “Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake”. You’d play as a young Solid Snake (with David Hayter reprising the role), as he infiltrates Outer Heaven and Zanzibar Land. I’d also have Kiefer Sutherland voice Venom Snake, with Richard Doyle voicing Big Boss. We’d also have Paul Eiding and Rob Paulsen voicing Colonel Campbell and Gray Fox, along with Troy Baker and Robin Atkin Downes portraying Ocelot and Miller. There would also be Cam Clarke playing a young Liquid Snake (in a post-credits call with Ocelot).
