Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Is Incredibly Underrated

If you thought we were done with Metal Gear PSP spin-offs, boy would you be wrong. The team at Kojima Productions had been wanting to release some mainline handheld installments that they referred to as “Metal Gear Solid Chapters”, and Kojima had an idea for a new mainline game where you could recruit soldiers using a wifi connection, so while he and the main team were working on the then upcoming Metal Gear Solid 4, the Metal Gear Acid 2 team was put onto developing this idea into a reality. And in December of 2006, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops was released to the world. So would the first mainline handheld title in the series turn out to be a success, or would it be held back by the platform it was developed for? Well, let’s talk about it.

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, officially abbreviated MPO, is a 2006 action-adventure stealth video game developed by Kojima Productions and published by Konami for the PlayStation Portable. The game was directed by Masahiro Yamamoto and written by Gakuto Mikumo, with series creator Hideo Kojima acting as producer.

About the camera following, it was made this way because the psp had only one analog stick, so the free camera was made to use while standing still (the camera by default is on de d-pad) but it can be changed, just open the options and you can change EVERYTHING which is a first on the metal gear series, and a huge positive for me

Extra: This is the first game that allows first person aim while moving (just use the camera buttons to move, or change it on the configurations, so the first person movement is attached to the analog and the camera to the directionals)

I absolutely love this game, and yes it IS cannon, as it gets directly referenced in 4 & 5. Kojima, in another interview stated that it was canon in the same way that the rest of the games in the mainline series were... in that it's events happened, but not necessarily the way they are shown. This is a concept he played with throughout the series via its constant retcons... and made into a massive plot point in MGS2, and key overarching thematic element of MGSV. He also stated that later games override and overwrite its events, just like with the rest of the series. The camera issue in this game, where it automatically steers in the direction you are moving is not present in MGS3 Subsistence. Its a mechanic put in the game SPECIFICALLY to compensate for the lack of a second thumbstick on the PSP making controlling it difficult. You have no idea how much fighting with it on the PSP's face buttons annoyed the hell out of me.

It's noncanon. If it wasn't, Big Boss would have the money to fund his own pmc base instead of roaming around as nomads before taking the Zadornov job in Peace Walker allowing them access to funds, tech, and their own offshore base. There's a good reason Kaz says "We can leave all that crap in San Hiranymo behind us." It was Kojima taking a stab at Portable Ops for being noncanon garbage. The only thing at all that is even somewhat canon is them showing us Ocelot getting the other half of the legacy, and that was already mentioned to have happened at the end of Snake Eater. Do your research next time.

So, umm, how do i put this, umm… In terms of the overall storyline, umm, it’s part of the saga but in terms of the small details, it’s a little, it would appear to be a little off from the main story."

PO will ALWAYS be canon imo. There is so much in that game that ties directly to other titles, and there are many references to PO in other titles. For the HD release of MGS1 they have the dude who voices Null also voice Grey Fox, which is such a cool change. PO also is the reason we ended up getting a mother base staff system and later an entire base builder. Also, did you NOT recruit Python? You screwed the pooch bruh. Python is stupid fun to play as.

A cool change? Nothing compares to the original voice acting done for the Cyborg Ninja by Greg Eagles (he also voiced Donald Anderson) Edit: I looked into it. Three different voice actors voiced Gray Fox in three different games. In Metal Gear Solid, his voice was provided by Greg Eagles. In the Nintendo remake, he was voiced by Rob Paulsen. Larc Spies voiced the younger version of Gray Fox in Portable Ops, and then went on to voice the cyborg ninja in the MGS digital graphic novel.

@subtegral I agree, he is nowhere NEAR as cool sounding as the OG dude who I forget the name of cuz I am shit.... but anyways, I meant it was a cool change for the reasons of continuity. Especially to a newer player, the same voice used throughout the series helps those notice that "holy shit. Its Null" even before you learn his name. I like continuity, call me crazy.

I always thought they changed Gray Fox's voice actor in Twin Snakes and the DGN because they couldn't get Greg Eagles, but then I realized they still got Greg Eagles for the DARPA chief's voice. I definitely love Eagles' voice better, but it does make more sense to not have the same dude voice two different characters. Plus Rob Paulsen, while not my favorite Gray Fox voice, definitely is a certified baller of a VA

One other thing I forgot to mention: apparently, PSP games made pre-2007 had to follow strict battery usage limitations that limited how much they could do. But then that year, I’m guessing with the release of the PSP 2000 “Slim,” those limitations were dropped. So essentially, PSP games made before and after that year were being developed for basically two different systems. Makes me wonder how MPO would’ve turned out if it was made after those limitations were dropped.

The framerate does not feel bad in the tiny screen of the psp, a lot of games run like that in that console and never felt bad. The camera in the other hand is bad no matter what. I remember that you can recruit Python if you use non lethal methods. And yeah, Johnny was my boss killer in my game too xD

Portable Ops is what I call "soft canon" because it's overall officially canon but has some conflicting elements. It's canon because: - Kojima have heavy involvement in the script and design, he just wasn't the director as he was busy with MGS4. - The Metal Gear Database, a free app for the PS3 that released around MGS4's release as an official wiki style database lists it as canon, as does documentation with the Master Collection Vol 1. - It's story ties into many canon events. Campbell and Gray Fox's origins, how the Patriots claimed all the parts of the Philosopher's Legacy, how Snake and Ocelot joined the Patriots, the first mech with the Metal Gear designation in the timeline and the first hint that Zero founded The Patriots. - In MGS: Peace Walker on the beach of the first mission after the introduction of Paz and Galvez, Kaz mentions leaving "that business in San Heironemo behind." San Heironemo Peninsula is where Portable Ops takes place and MSF is implicitly founded as a result of Big Boss telling him about his "Army's Heaven" idea. It's not canon because: - Colonel Campbell never mentions having worked with Big Boss. - Some details of Grey Fox's story don't match up with his story in MGS1. - Sokolov inexplicably survives being beaten by Volgin and escapes Grozny Grad being nuked. - The game was an attempt by Kojima to get his team practice at making a Metal Gear without his leadership as he wanted to leave the series behind so his level of input is questionable. Overall it's worth it because the story is competent and ties into alot of series lore despite its control scheme being less than stellar.
@subtegral
@subtegral 5 ай бұрын
There is no such thing as "soft canon". Either something is canon or it is non-canon. Three of your four reasons of Kojima saying certain details are wrong aren't actually.. wrong. Just because Campbell never mentioned knowing Big Boss personally back in 1970 doesn't really matter. So he never talked about it.. big deal. Gray Fox is the most glaring contradiction to his own backstory featured in Metal Gear 2, not MGS1. Sokolov surviving isn't a huge surprise since it was left ambiguous when Volgin only said "I *guess* he's dead then". Kojima was actually the Executive Producer of Portable Ops, not simply a producer, so you can bet he had a heavy hand in its development.
@PlebNC
@PlebNC 5 ай бұрын
@@subtegral Soft canon is a thing as it allows certain elements of not entirely canon entries to become selectively part of canon. For example Fallout Tactics is officially non canon to the Fallout franchise, however Fallout 3 and New Vegas have direct references to it making it partially canon. And the Star Wars extended universe has been made non-canon however parts of it are being salvaged to weave them back into canon putting the extended universe into a soft canon state. By a similar token Portable Ops is partially canon because it's officially recognised as a canon but has some inconsistencies, which to be blunt: isn't a new problem with Kojima's written. He retcons and contradicts the lore all the time. Remember when the Patriots were originally a committee of people who died a hundred years ago, then he retconned that and swept it away as bogus intel so he could do the Zero created the Patriots bit.
@FullmetalYoutuber2012
@FullmetalYoutuber2012 5 ай бұрын
Firstly, it’s worth mentioning that retcons or changes are nothing new in any Metal Gear game, Kojima or no. In addition to @subtegral point about Kojima, he was ALSO general manager. So he had a lot more involvement than people think. Second, the Gray Fox retcon is actually largely a myth. Fox never actually said he met Boss after the “US-Vietnam war” he just said “after the war” and most Americans (as they sometimes tend to do) assumed it was after this war. If he meant “after the (First Indochina) war” his age fits perfectly. There’s actually no precedence set for Fox’s age. It all stems from that assumption.

What I’d change about the game to make it better (WARNING: Long read:) • Change the title. Maybe something like “MGS: Army’s Heaven.” • NO FREE CAMERA. At this point in the series, only the Subsistence version of MGS3 had a free camera, every other game used a fixed one. The PSP lacking a 2nd analog stick should’ve meant a fixed camera was a no-brainer. - On that note, a fixed camera would free up the control scheme quite a bit. Press slightly on the analog stick to stalk/walk, press fully to run; X to crouch/go prone, O for CQC, [] for aiming and firing weapons, Δ as the action button; R for weapons inventory (using the scrolling boxes on the side of the screen like previous entries with as many slots as needed,) L for items inventory; ^ on the D-Pad to enter and exit FPV, down on the D-Pad (along with ^) to adjust the scope in scope view. • Voiced dialogue outside of cutscenes. • Similarly to Peace Walker and V, a side mode where you could deploy your recruited soldiers to conflict zones to receive new recruits, supplies, and money to purchase things. But instead of sending troops around the world, you’d just send them to different regions of Colombia where their civil war was taking place; a humble beginning to that mechanic. • Keep the story mostly unchanged, but have greater involvement from Major Zero, Para-Medic, and SIGINT. Me personally, I’d fuse Gene and Python into one character to up the stakes of the story a little more but that’s probably just me. - What I would change about the story is include an epilogue segment about the founding of the Patriots (beyond just the post-credits phone call) and the creation of “Les Enfants Terribles,” and the resulting falling-out between Big Boss and Zero. Also, a brief segment that visualizes when Big Boss first meets Miller and then founding MSF (as of right now, that’s only explained in a cassette tape in PW I think.) Finally, a scene showing the army Big Boss amassed at San Hieronymo being divided in half at the end of the main story; one half remaining with BB and becoming MSF’s first soldiers, the other half remaining with Campbell and becoming FOXHOUND’s first operatives. • A boss fight against Ursula/Elisa in human form (not just her piloting RAXA.)

Did you know that you can recruit soldiers with the PSP's GPS dongle? Functionally it works much like say Pokemon Go does, you have to use a radar system to find them while you're out and about walking. I'm planning on testing it out shortly once the weather starts staying nice (it's like 30 degrees cooler today than it was at the beginning of the week). Funny enough, the GPS never released in North America, but the NTSC version of the game has the option for it baked in while the PAL version doesn't. Kojima's such a flakey, inconsistent, perhaps egotistical even, savant. Of course he would retcon himself and declare any game he didn't work on Canon years later... when all the ground work from when the game was in development says it's Canon. This is still Canon in my opinion, but I can see how he can say a game like Snake's Revenge wouldn't be.

Quote: _"I'm going to treat PO as mainline, as that was the intent when the game was developed and released."_ Correct. During the development of PO and on release it was promoted as a legit new installment in the series and talked about as such in magazines and online, and considered as such for years after its release. It wasn't until years later that the meme of _"PO is noncanon"_ began; some people started pushing that idea and others began parroting it, and it became a meme that took on a life of its own. Frankly it's an extremely cancerous meme. It's a meme based on various misrepresentations and exaggerations, and relies on choosing to ignore various things or not knowing them. The simple truth is PO is _mostly_ canon or _the gist of it_ is canon, or in other words the majority of it is canon with certain details of the story being "perhaps not exactly as they truly happened" basically - and so _those specific details_ should be considered as "semi-canon", with the main content of the game as fully canon. That's essentially how Kojima later described it. In contrast, _in the meme_ PO is simply "noncanon" flatout and should be discarded outright. So already there, we see how wrong the meme is. But it gets worse. Let's go back a bit in time - to a time when most of those who parrot the meme weren't even into the Metal Gear series yet. Prior to the release of PO (Dec 2006) while MGS4 was also still in production, Kojima repeatedly stressed how important PO was and said _"Before 4, we'd like you to definitely play Ops."_ and he also said _"If we change the story of Ops, we have to change 4. Until Ops is finished, 4's story can't be finalized."_ So that's that. Furthermore, it's important to note (no spoilers) that several things in PW and therefore V, rely on and are a continuation of things in PO and that MGS4 and PW and V mention or reference PO in various ways and thereby acknowledge and recognize PO; such as for instance the existence of MSF in PW, flashbacks in MGS4 to PO, Ocelot in V talking about the Legacy and related stuff, and a more noteworthy MGS4 thing being (keeping this spoiler-free) important plot points regarding Zero and Ocelot that's "revealed" in MGS4 is _first_ revealed in PO. That's why Kojima said what he did concerning PO in relation to MGS4. For that reason alone it's a very good idea to play PO prior to MGS4, or in other words it's a bad idea to go into MGS4 without having played PO first. Likewise if one intends on playing PW it's a very good idea to have played PO first (as PO is essentially, in various ways, the foundation for PW - and also thus V, so PO & PW & V are sort of in the same "universe" in a certain way) which sadly very few new gamers going through the series do, due to the aforementioned cancerous meme. When PO was released there was no controversy _at all_ and basically everyone considered it canon. As does MGS4 itself released two years later; within MGS4 you read about the events and characters of PO. In MGS4 it's presented in a more sophisticated and elaborate manner but the idea is the same as the "Previous Operations" section of MGS where you read about the events of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2. If one is going through the series, the best time to play PO is obviously between MGS3 and MGS4 as the story of PO picks up from MGS3 and PO was released before MGS4 and as already stated contains some important plot things that are later mentioned in MGS4 and it's better to know about them in advance from PO as that makes certain things in MGS4 more logical and less weird and less sudden/surprising (same goes for PW to some extent, in some other ways). There are more things one can mention with regards to why PO should be played, why it's a bad idea to not play it, but not without going into spoilers. Something that highlights, in a way, just how dumb and weird the _"PO isn't canon"_ meme is, _is how its followers_ - those people who jump on that meme bandwagon and parrot the meme - _loudly claim "Kojima wasn't involved"_ etc and point to him being "only" the Producer of PO when Kojima was _also_ "only" the Producer of Zone of the Enders which was and still is by most considered Kojima's game or strongly associated with Kojima. The followers of the _"PO isn't canon"_ meme usually think of ZOE in that way; they think of ZOE as his game - they got no problem with that. In truth, Kojima oversaw and guided the development of and was _more involved_ with PO than with ZOE. But in stark contrast to ZOE; in the case of PO, many people who fell for the _"it's not canon"_ meme, they _very eagerly_ jump on that fact - him being the Producer - and scream loudly that means he had no important influence over PO and so _therefore,_ because he was "just the Producer", PO should be outright ignored and is flatout noncanon (despite the games released after it referencing it and talking about it and effectively relying on it and having it as their foundation). In addition to being the Producer of PO, Kojima is also credited in the ending credits of PO for the "Story" and "Planning" of the game. It's _right there,_ in the credits of the game - credits which most of the followers of the meme have never seen (as they're content with just parroting the meme and haven't played the game). But of course in the face of _a meme,_ none of that stuff matters at all. Memes are powerful (especially so, unfortunately, memes of a cancerous and false nature), and some people _feel really smart_ and feel like they're "on the right side", or feel part of a group and hence a sense of belonging, if they parrot the meme. And _that's_ what it's mostly about for them; their feelings; how parroting the _"PO isn't canon"_ meme makes them feel. It's extremely dumb, but that's how it is. However, there's more to this than that. Another reason for this strange phenomenon with PO, for this meme, has to do with the fact it's a PSP exclusive game. Many of the early proponents of the meme, and many who later chose to parrot it, were proponents of the meme because they didn't own a PSP and/or missed the game when it was new and easily available or didn't want to spend the money for a PSP or for the game (or they never figured out how to run custom firmware on the PSP and just DL the game). Such people _liked_ hearing that it's "not canon" and thought that's _very convenient_ as that meant they could "safely ignore it" and not need to get the game - and more importantly not need to get a PSP. Nowadays though, we can easily emulate PO on our computers so there's zero good excuse to not play it (if one never has before). And that makes it easy to recommend PO, or to tell people they should play it, since nowadays you're not effectively also telling people to get a PSP (as you effectively were in the first few years after the release of PO when emulation didn't exist or was very poor). That said though... While I judge PO to be good in some ways, I mostly dislike it. Context is important though. You can judge it versus the other Metal Gear games, and judge it on its own, and also judge it as a PSP game. On the first playthrough PO is pretty good and enjoyable, regardless of context. For a PSP game it's extremely well-made. It's certainly one of the very best PSP titles. In the context with the series though: Overall, all things considered, I like PO more than PW and V. But compared to the Metal Gear games that came before it, PO is pretty bad to be brutally honest. It's occasionally too childish for one thing. And the whole "recruiting soldiers" stuff (and related things) has nothing whatsoever to do with what Metal Gear is about; MGS4 has some major problems (and MGS3 a few), but PO was the true beginning of the downfall of the series. In some ways, in a certain limited sense, what we have in PO is still a proper Metal Gear game (the last proper one even), but simultaneously it's when the plane was pointed nose straight down with the throttle maxed - it began to fall apart, but the plane hadn't slammed into the ground yet or even fully torn its wings off yet. All the bad non-MG gameplay aspects of PO (introduced in PO) was doubled-down on in the later games - and in them what made a Metal Gear game be a Metal Gear game was diluted away with garbage and nonsense and weirdness, and lost, and the essence and spirit of the series died. And of course that's Kojima's own doing. Yes Konami is to blame to some extent for The Phantom Poop ending up like it did (it's obviously not "not unfinished" as some claim, and obviously isn't exactly how it was intended to be), but even without Konami being Konami (that goes back a long time: they gravely damaged SH3 and destroyed Team Silent) the game still would've been essentially the same as it is now (an extremely far cry from MGS & MGS2 & MGS3 and even from MGS4). Just like Lucas made Star Wars worse (already starting with ROTJ), so did Kojima make Metal Gear worse. We should be honest about that. So with this, I'm not defending PO itself. I'm simply annoyed by and tired of the _"it's not canon"_ meme and tired the type of people who parrot it - usually people who haven't been with the series for very long (I've been with it since the first PSX demos for Solid). What's most annoying though, and what's unfortunate, is how many people who've never played any Metal Gear and want to get into the series decide to "skip" PO because of a meme they heard online. So they miss out on the game, and therefore they lack the correct perspective and experience going into the later games. It shouldn't be like that. Seen several streamers etc, for example, go through the series for the first time and they "skip" PO because of the meme, thinking they've made the right choice because they "learned" that's what they should do. Or some people (for example in the stream-chat or in some comments) told them to do that; those people themselves just parroting the meme.

the whole thing about the canonicity of PO is that it WAS made as canon but peace walker, a game that was originally portable ops 2 before kojima took over, both directly references it (timeline aligns, they reference the incident that happens in PO in the opening cutscene, etc.) but also retcons the shit out of it, MGSV goes even further than that. there is one interview with kojima where he says basically "parts of PO are still canon" and thats how i choose to take it, since its not his writing he felt free to overwrite it whenever but when not necessary, its left as is.

The only reference to PO in PW is basically a kojima 4th wall break. Kaz had nothing to do with POs events and didn't meet BB until tears later so him talking about San heironymo doesn't make sense. "Finally we can leave all that crap in San heironymo behind" is a not so subtle statement at the start of the game that we should forget all about PO as PW will go on to provide absolutely no continuity with it and essentially pretend it never happened.
@supremeworld87
@supremeworld87 5 ай бұрын
@subtegral nope. The japanese translation is even MORE blatantly about it being a 4th wall break because it mentions "cutting ties" with San Heironymo. It'd a 4th wall break, and always was but you idiots just refuse to accept it. Its kojimas way of making it clear to the audience that PW is not a continuation of PO, it's a direct sequel to MGS3 and for the remainder of the game pretends PO never even happened! It's the one and only reference to it and makes zero sense in universe because it's kaz saying it, a guy who wasn't at San heironymo and didn't meet Snake until years after - just like kojima wasn't involved with PO. Kojima is using kaz as his avatar. But no, the PO brigade can't possibly even consider the idea that their precious game isn't canon. This isn't about PW or whether PW was better than PO. It was better, but that's irrelevant to the argument. This about you fools finally accepting that the one mention of PO in PW was a 4th wall break. Just deal with it and move on

Fun fact: the cutscene artwork is done by Ashley Wood who previously did the art for the MGS1 and 2 comics by IDW, which were turned into motion comics and sold as UMD movies for the PSP. He would be brought back to do the cutscene art for Peace Walker as well. I like how his art is very line art heavy and feels like Yoji Shinkawa's concert art despite not being woodblock art (to my knowledge). The comics are still available to buy physically and the digital motion comics are in the Master Collection Vol 1. There is no difference in content between the 2 aside from the motion comic obviously being animated and most of the cast doing voice overs for dialogue. The comics themselves are interesting as they deviate from canon a little bit. They're officially non-canon but are a fun alternative take on the game events with great artwork.

Actually, in MGS3 Subsistence (and the HD ver) the camera is completely free range, you can move it anywhere you want and it’ll stay there, like for example: you can have Snake running toward the screen with no issue. The reason why the camera is so tight in trying to stay behind Snake in Portable Ops is simply because they wanted to have that free camera ability but had to compensate it a bit because the PSP only has a single control stick.

THEY DO?? I know MGS1 does, but I guess that with first-person aiming being introduced, I just never really noticed the auto-aim being there 😂

@notcole yup. Just hold the fire button while NOT in 3rd person. When he first pulls the weapon out it auto aims, and as long as you don't manually move your aim, it will stay locked on.

Funny thing is, when you fight Vamp in MGS2 you can't lock on to him because he just dodges those shots, you have to aim manually in that fight. The fun part is, I never knew about the lock-on so I learned about that feature of the fight years later.

As for the camera, they should have designed the game more similar to pre-3d camera control titles

I actually liked POps more than PWalker. This one felt more "grounded" than the wierd jokey anime that Pwalker was. If it wasn't for other characters that were hamfisted over some of the future installments it could have been argued that Pwalker was the one that wasn't canon.

i played nothing but this for a while back im the golden days of the psp.. the multiplayer was really fun, you could capture each other and steal characters from other players and there were a few pretty powerful rare ones. you use the units captured from the main story and missions.. very unique game.

One of the few times the term 'underrated' has been used correctly. I agree. I think portable ops was not only better than Peace Walker, but should be considered cannon over both that and MGSV. PO bridges MGS3 and MG1; all other games are totally redundant.

I agree with the canon discussion. Recently playing through MGS4 and they reuse assets like cutscenes from this game and even have brand new artwork in the church where Big Mama hides that references this game makes it canon for me no matter what Kojima spews out about it. I am really curious as to what happened through the development of Peace Walker that made Kojima change his opinion so much and consider this a "spin-off". They also reference it in Peace Walker too in the beginning

Considering how much you liked this game, you're gonna have a really good time whenever you get around to Peace Walker, which imo is the peak of the portable MGS titles. PW basically improves on everything PO did with the added benefit of being directed by Kojima himself.

Sorry but PW sucked. It nuked it's own lore by having advanced AI Metal Gears in the 70s, even though the AI controlled Rays from MGS2 were shown to be wonky even though it was 40 years later

@@FullmetalKZbinr2012Plus it’s the only 3D game in the canonical series that’s rated T instead of M, because Kojima purposefully made it for younger audiences. Meanwhile MPO is rated M same as the rest.

I consider portable ops Canon. The story is good, it explores big boss deeper, and Gene is super underrated as a main bad guy. And Python has a backstory which makes his downfall tragic. His boss fight is one of my favorites. Also the music is good 👍
