METAL GEAR SOLID REVEAL TRAILER 1996

Since everyone is celebrating 1998's #MetalGearSolid 15th anniversary
Let's take a deep look at the nostalgic Promotional campaign that began in 1996!
this video is the reveal trailer done entirely with CGI (since kojima back then didn't want to spoil the PSX gfx engine, some people believe that this was footage from the canceled 3DO version but in the contextual menus you can clearly see the PS buttons (square, circle, x)
the 1st part of this video features a "behind the scenes" at Konami Computer Entertainment japan (then will be re branded as KCEJ in 2000, then Kojima Productions in 2005)

This is where it all started for me. I didn't get to see the video until years later (never this high quality, wow!) but I remember my friend excitedly telling me they were making a new Metal Gear game. I had no idea what Metal Gear was, I skipped the entire 8-bit generation. But my friend's hype was infectious. I didn't get all that hyped myself until about a year later shortly after E3 1997 when Next Generation magazine did their big cover story. I might have seen some footage too, but this was back when videos were all little teeny Quicktimes the size of a postage stamp. I always get all nostalgic like this when I'm waiting for the next MGS game. Good times.

It's amazing to think that this reveal trailer came out when I was only 1 year old. Now I'm nearly into my 30's as of this comment. It's incredible to see the offices where developers made Metal Gear Solid 1 back in the 90's in Tokyo. Especially seeing Hideo Kojima in his younger days and he is still working in the video game industry even now in 2024. I look forward to seeing his next big new IP in the years ahead.

the geometry is almost the same as the ps1 gameplay models, but the textures are pretty high-res, also since this is a cgi pre-rendered video it has anti-aliasing so everything looks nice and clean... also the 3d software camera is better than the native realtime ps1 renderer, it has some DoF

what i noticed is that the rendering resolution is very low even for 1996 CGI. there is some noticeable aliasing throughout. i guess they either really cheapened out at the render computers, or they where trying to make people doubt if this was maybe real time pc footage or something...maybe even both.

Aw damn; this trailer shows Snake calling Sniper Wolf on his codec. That would've been really interesting to see in the final game.

Oh yeah, she cuts into Snake and Otacon's conversation in the snowfield. After he gets shot. Snake's actually calling wolf this time; indoors, too. I wonder what the original plan was.

+Call Me Ishmael Reading the Japanese Katakana, Snake actually calling Meryil here too, and it looks like similar to the final product, since it sounds like he is asking her if she is Meryl. Although they used a picture of Sniper Wolf.

These visuals look more like this was going to be on the Dreamcast! People must have assumed this was fake, given this was the year Quake was released.

Those visuals where rendered using silicon image computers, this was made as an announcement teaser because back then realtime engine footage was not ready, if you see the models are almost the same one as the final ones, but those are the high resolution textures that Yoji drew (before been downscaled for the ps1)... this was more like a pitch... and it was for the announcement, a year after this teaser was released the actual game made its debut at E3 1997 also there's an emulator disc for the Dreamcast that allowed MGS1 to run at higher resolution and improved anti-aliasing, the game looks really nice on that console also konami didn't hide that this video was pre-rendered, even at the begging of the promo show the computers rendering the frames

Imagine someone infiltrates Konami HQ and deletes/destroys all Metal Gear Solid contracts and transfers all data to Kojima. And as he is about to leave, the MGS1:OST starts playing on all the speakers in the building.

I extracted it from the official KONAMI DVD, since the video was directly from original source the bit rate was high enough I could do a basic upscale... turned out OK

These graphics looked better than in the psx but the gameplay of psx was much better than in this console. That's why konami just put the game on playstation ;D
