@zman94155 жыл бұрын
Compared to the M1911 I show in the video, and essentially any standard handgun, it is indeed heavy, loud, and impractical. It doesn't matter what kind of individual you are, a 5.3lb (that's the empty weight) pistol with poor balance and no front sight, plus the supposed tumbling bullets, has very little practicality. Granted, if it magically had infinite ammo, you'd have accuracy by volume and not have to worry about reloading (don't tell Revolver Ocelot), so it'd be a little bit more practical, but even then you'd be pushing it!
@CaptDestro4 жыл бұрын
@@zman9415 It's only impractical because the barrel is so short. You lose a lot of velocity and each shot has some serious muzzle flash/concussion. It might be worth doing in 300 Black Out but I'm not sure how reliable that would be from a drum.
@zman94154 жыл бұрын
@@CaptDestro caliber isn't really the issue, although you are correct about the 5.56 round losing tremendous amounts of velocity at this barrel length. The lack of sights and the general bulk are the major issues from the practicality aspect. Sure you could use a carry handle mount, but that's against the look. .300 BLK would still have some concussion issues as well, although not nearly as bad. As for the drum, it struggles because of the fast cyclic speed of the pistol gas system. Maybe a custom, extra-heavy buffer would help, but it's honestly not worth it.
@AXLbutimreallyChad4 жыл бұрын
@@CaptDestro the short barrel was purposely meant to destabilize the 5.56 rounds (to make the rounds slither through the air like snakes) as stated in the games. It wasn't made for accuracy (which was shown by the lack of a front sight), it was made to rapidly fire a shower of slow, innacurate tumbling lead that would messily wound unarmored opponents and deal copious amounts of damage to the tissue instead of just piercing through. If used as a standard rifle/pistol, definitely impractical: if used as a man-shredder for close range, it's still impractical, but it damn well won't leave the person on the business end standing for long.

I recently saw a video about a firearm by Franklin Armory called the Reformation which, for those who don't know, is a short barreled AR with a true stock that doesn't require a tax stamp because it has a linear-rifled barrel. The interesting thing about its ballistics is that the bullets tumble significantly mid-flight because the barrel has no twist ratio. Anything past 50 yards gets slapped sideways by 5.56 bullets, >>>much like what we saw with the Patriot in MGS3
@jason11820004 жыл бұрын
SPACKLEBOX the Patriot does actually have a twist rate, that being 1/12 since it's supposed to be a shortened, customized XM16E1. It is implied that The Boss uses heavier bullets which tumble as they’re not properly stabilized by the twist rate and the shortened barrel. While, tumbling provides little in the way of accuracy it increases the lethality in close quarters and given the Patriot's size, it is perfect for that role.

Like ZMan said, it is armoring not gunsmithing since you are assembling gun parts. Gunsmithing means to start out with raw materials like a billet of aluminum or steel barstock and end up with a gun. Neither is really hard if you are willing to do the basic of research and monetary investment.

The M231 is a very odd kind of weapon. They opted to not have a stock on it because the gun is practically completely useless outside of it's intended mount. The FPW will not spin stabilize bullets at all, and they will just keyhole away, the idea is that you load a magazine of tracers and then walk a stream of keyholing projectiles towards a target. The gun threads into a ball pintle mount, which ensures that in CBRN contaminated battlefield conditions, the vehicle maintains its CBRN protective seal, because NATO saw the BPM-1, had a freakout, and envisioned a vehicle capable of fighting in some kind of ludicrous doomsday scenario, which it probably would (while the BPM-1 might not). It's not a bad vehicle, but its origins are some kind of bizarre Cold War fever dream.
@zman94155 жыл бұрын
Very true, but this is not something that' s based on the M231. Within the canon of the game, the time this exists is several decades before the M231 would even be thought up. Additionally, within the game you can see The Patriot firing from closed bolt rather than the open-bolt system used on the M231. It also lacks the modified side plate that the FPW has.

Its a rocky mountain arms patriot pistol, gained popularity in 3000 miles to graceland
@zman941524 күн бұрын
Not quite. The Rocky Mountain Arms Patriot was part of the inspiration for the MGS3 Patriot, but they are not identical. The RMA used non-standard receivers: a cast lower with a different profile and an upper that had a massive rise before the rail. It's hideous. Some later ones came with a lower rail and some with A2 upper-receivers. Allegedly some came with Canadian C7 upper, but any you see with a M16A1 upper is not original and was replaced by the owner to make something closer to a MGS3 Patriot. Meanwhile, the MGS3 one gets the front end look of the tubular handguard and squared-off, recessed gas block, but is otherwise standard Vietnam-era parts. You can arguably say that the receiver extension is mirror from the RMA pistol, evident by the knurled end used for it's custom buffer system. That length of receiver extension without stock notches did exist in 1964, as it was used by the Colt 607. As for 3000 Miles to Graceland, I don't know how much I'd say the Patriot gained popularity through that movie. The ones seen in 3000 Miles to Graceland were modified to try and look like a super-compact rifle. They had the receiver extension replaced with a carbine one so a stock could be mounted and had carry handles attached to their massive riser-rails. This had been done before in at least two other, previous films (Congo and Soldier), but none of these movies really did well. It'd be a stretch to say something got really popular from them.

Just be aware that my lower is in the original grey anodizing color while a Daniel Defense Mk.18 upper is finished in the more modern black anodizing. If you want an M16A1 style lower in black, I suggest you'd look at Brownell's as they offer this style in black or grey. Thanks! That's what I was going for. I'd have to update some of the drawings as there were a few changes during their actual machining. The gas block could also probably be lightened in the unseen areas since the current design is literally just a block and about 1.1lbs. The belt clip was also made differently; initially I had planned to try and weld it to a existing receiver extension, but we changed it so it was bent to shape from steel and had a boss welded on. The muzzle brake needs a material change. I selected 4140 because it's used for muzzle devices pretty regularly, but did not factor in the significantly increased pressure from the 7" barrel. Even after 100 rounds, it is showing signs of erosion.

I could have tried getting a 1:14 twist barrel, have it cut down, and then thrown some heavy/long rounds through it for some spectacularly under-stabilized rounds, but that would have been a lot of added cost and made this thing even more useless.

@zman94152 жыл бұрын
@@devil5hlygrim972 Not really. It wouldn't be too hard to do as it's just making the custom stock and grip, but I wouldn't want to start cutting up a 91/30PU to make it. It also sort of lacks some of the fun factor.

Would you ever sell this? And if so how much for?
@zman94156 жыл бұрын
For legal reasons and cost reasons, the closest that I'd ever go would be selling a parts kit that included the major custom parts. I'd have to change the material of the muzzle brake and would possibly want to attempt a redesign on the hidden part of the gas block to save weight. The handguard would also have to include a barrel nut, which is something taken from another complete handguard assembly unless I can find one of the companies that makes them willing to sell me just the barrel nuts (or maybe make the handguard custom too, which is possible if the amount is high enough). I would leave the barrel and probably receiver extension off as well. The barrel is a pain to find in the correct length and some people might want something slightly longer anyway. The receiver extension is somewhat similar, as some people may want one that can take a QD swivel or something.
@user-ip2jk4vr7n6 жыл бұрын
@@zman9415 hmm well let me know if you go about selling the parts. I have a big ar pistol enthusiust who is interested in building me one, but i do live in nevada and would be able to purchase this pistol
@user-ip2jk4vr7n6 жыл бұрын
And how much in total did it cost to make this?
@zman94156 жыл бұрын
There were some setbacks that inflated the cost a bit, but around $$1100-$1200 if I remember correctly. I'd have to double check my detailed notes for a more correct number.
@zman94156 жыл бұрын
Honestly, if you just want an AR pistol there would be much better, more cost effective options. I did this as a hardcore fan of Metal Gear Solid and went to great lengths to get all the details correct (aside from select fire, of course). You could do a basic AR pistol for under half the cost that this build took, sights not included.

@darkshock42mlg053 жыл бұрын
If the bullets did the tumble out of the barrel it would probably be one of the most useless weapons because the last thing you want on the battlefield is for your bullets to Keyhole a trained and if it's doing it as it leaves the barrel then it's even more useless

That "long tail" is the receiver extension. It houses the buffer on the AR15 design.

Is there any way we can acquire the custom fabricated parts from your sources if we were to attempt this build?
@zman94154 жыл бұрын
I looked into that a while back when I was first getting questions about this, but didn't move further due to concerns about liability. If something went wrong and I were to have gotten hurt from my own personal project, that'd be one thing. If a part were sold and something happened, that's a whole different story. On top of that, I don't know about production at any sort of scale. All of these parts were one-offs.
