One thing I found interesting was the contrast between Vai's sound and Polyphia's, although they fit very well together. Polyphia signature sound is very chopped up, and Vai deliberately wrote a solo based on sustained notes and long slides. Together they sound like the union between the continuous and the discrete.
@PeteVinniePlay2 жыл бұрын
that's a very very good point!

Exactly contrast is important. Even earlier than that they used distortion for contrast. It is refreshing to have popular music with dynamics.

I really like how polyphia built this video, it builds on itself not only musically but spatially as well as the song is getting more and more complex and more ppl are playing at the same time the space they occupy is bigger and bigger until they are outside on the rooftop and then the three guitars sing together blending the three distinct sounds... it's just beautiful artistically and musically

This song is so cool! as soon as I saw the video for it was out, I was hoping you guys would do a reaction to it. Steve is an absolute class act. It's amazing how he can take modern stuff, add his own flair and make it work so well. It's no wonder he has remained relevant and will probably continue to. Vinnie's reaction when Steve shows up is gold!! 🤘

within the context of "Ego Death," Vai's solo represents saying more with less rather than play as many notes as possible. also his whammy control through the entire thing is literally like speaking an entire additional language of guitar technique. i want to see them with Adrian Belew now. i'm also very interested to see what their song with Chino from Deftones is. you should check out the Japanese band Sokoninaru. unbelievable musicians, i think you'd love them.
@1450JackCade Жыл бұрын
So few people notice that that 'throne' is the same one Tim is sitting in to start the video, then Scott is sitting in it when his solo section begins, and then on the rooftop, Vai is sitting in it. Of course, the trumpet player, who represents the African-American roots of western popular music just sits on the highest part of the building structure, not needing anything else because, as the band+Vai acknowledges their homage (which is what the song is about) to their predecessors.

The video is very representative of where they started to where they are at with the acceptance from Steve Vai. At the very beginning Tim Henson is sitting on the throne in the basement, next we go up a few levels where we have windows and light and Scott lepage is then sitting on the throne, then part 3 is on the roof with Steve Vai sitting on the throne. Also at the very beginning of the video when we see Tim playing on his own, the sound is processed as an unplugged song, then when Scott is brought it it’s plugged in right before the title card. They are all incredible musicians and it is awesome to see Steve Vai in there just happily jamming with the new generation of guitar virtuosos with the end just highlighting that they are now all here at the top. Can’t wait to see more from Polyphia and hopefully we can have more awesome collaborations from Steve Vai too!

@keesketsers58662 жыл бұрын
I read somewhere that in the first part Vai played (on the throne) he actually bends one (or more) string while also using the whammy to shape the sound, essentially bending a note (with his fingers) within a completely bend-up chord (with the trem). Check his fingering really close and you can sort of see it.

When I first heard Steve Vai's solo on this I was disappointed. It felt lackluster. After 4 more listens I still wasn't really sold. It's so weird because after 10+ listens, it really is complimentary to the track how much he held back. We all know the dude can shred. It's like he purposely took it easy on this track to tip the cap to the new school but deep down we all know he's really on another level with it. The track needed another speed and he provided that. Amazing.

Nice review and first visit to your channel. You seem pretty open to guitarists from around the world. Suggest you react/listen to Haruka Noma (Hal-Ca) from the band Asterism. A Japanese instrumental metal/progressive/jazz metal band. The band consists of three outstanding musicians but Haruka, the lead guitarist, is the standout. She is often compared to Steve Vai, Buckethead and even SRV. They are a young band and Haruka herself is young, still being only 19. But they have 3 albums out ranging from pretty traditional metal, through progressive jazz metal to anime metal. Might be best to start with Dawn (live) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKa0gal_g6-Wd5I or Blaze (live) kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2KzqZ6mbdF6d9U both off their first album Ignition. Haruka is 16 in these.

I love your reactions. I think it is time to introduce you to one of the greatest guitar duos to come along in quite some time. There is a heavy metal band from Japan who formed in 2016 that has started to take the world by storm. They already won the 2018 Metal Hammer Golden Gods award for best new band. The kicker, they are an all female band, and despite being from Japan, they sing all their songs in English. But the best part is they have two phenomenal guitarists, Midori and Miyako, who are on par with Herman Li and Sam Totman from DragonForce. They have in fact toured with DF in 2019 in the UK. I recommend you check out their song "Set the World on Fire" the live performance. Here is the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2rdpHtsnqySbMU
