50something metalhead here! I saw the birth of Heavy Metal and I'm a fan of many subgenres, from old school vintage Metal to Trash, Death, Black and much more! If people told me just one year ago that Gojira would play at the Olympics opening ceremony, I wouldn't have believed it. Awesome achievement and performance! The French revolution was extremely violent and bloody, the raw power and energy of Gojira's music fits this historical event perfectly. This is Metal AF! Ah çà ira" was a popular song during the French revolution. It basically says: It will be OK, let's hang the aristocrats from the lamp posts and the people will be ok. This castle is la Conciergerie, the prison where political opponents awaited their execution by guillotine. You can see beheaded people at the windows. The "blood" is made of small pieces of red paper.The ship is on the city of Paris' coat-of-arms with the motto "fluctuat nec mergitur", meaning the ship is in a storm but will not sink. It is a symbol of resilience. The opera singer is a metalhead, she was a metal singer before starting an opera singer career. Once again, amazing performance! 🖤🤘🖤

French Here, it's prononced "ah ! sa ira" ( ah ! that will be fine ) it's a song from the french revolution back in 1789 about hanging the whealthy elites and specially the king and the queen. The castle in the videos is the one were the french queen Marie antoinette was jailed before going to the guillotine For a lot of people out there it was the best part of the opening ceremony, many of my coworker/family who aren't metalhead told me they like this part

Been listening to metal since I was 13 and that was 43 years ago. From the 1st listen to Sabbath's Paranoid album in my Jr. high school friends room, I was hooked. When I saw this live, I couldn't believe it was really happening. It was actually really emotional for me. 1st of all, Gojira is bad ass, and they crushed it. And for France to have the balls to do this on a stage w/ between 1 and 2 BILLION people watching???.......serious props to their Olympic commitee and event organizers for their bravery. They represented Metal hard and it was amazing. The emotional part was that it felt like Metal had all of a sudden exploded from the deep pit within which all us metal heads revel and mosh in it's greatness. And in the next instant was just hovering there on the side of that castle and blowing peoples minds. Even the annoying commentators were like "Oh my God...what are we seeing?", but in a good way. IMHO a huge moment of "validation" for metal and I'd wager the band will look back on that moment as probably the biggest of their career.

The castle they playing on is called " La conciergerie " it used to be part of the royal palace, then during the revolution it became a jail and Marie Antoinette was one of the prisoners inside the castle. Almost 3000 prisoners were in the conciergerie, their last place before getting beheaded. The boat is because the boat is the emblem of the city and the motto of Paris is « Fluctuat nec mergitur« , Latin phrase which means he is beaten by the waves but does not sink. It’s all about history and symbolism. Opera singer Marina Viotti symbolizes Marianne, the personification of the revolution and the French Republic. Just a quick comment from a non metal fan that is disgusted by the fake bigoted hatred aimed at this bold and brave ceremony. One thing that has kept me smiling is the amazing reactions from you metal heads. I've watched a lot of "reaction videos" from all around the world and, each time, I saw people react like we should all react: as kids ready to be amazed without any stupid second thoughts. I found metal lovers to be really kind and happy people and even got out with a playlist for an introduction to metal for my upcoming vacation :) What is really funny, though, is how much time you guys can spend arguing about what sub genre or sub sub genre a given band belongs to. The headless woman was Marie Antoinette, she was the Queen of France, imprisoned, tried for treason and later beheaded for her crimes and the reason for the French Revolution. The location Gojira chose was the prison where Marie Antoinette was found guilty of Treason. Ah, Ca Ira translates to “It’ll be alright” or some like that and it was a French Revolution song. Gojira chose this song and location to show the bloody history of France. I think they did a masterful job of blending history and Opera with Heavy Metal. Everything about this performance was brilliant.

I'm not a fan of Metal... but this scene at the "conciergerie" building was insane and so justified, for the Freedom/Liberty show. Metal is exactly the contemporary music for the Revolution. I couldn't believe while seeing it, that they had dared doing this. This Olympics opening (and other scene, too) were completely crazy, inclusive, spectacular, impertinent as the French can be, when they are free to create a show. I'm so proud of what have been done, even if there's always peoples screaming about that.

This was historic. Gojira is a great band. Our whole family LOVES this band. Even my husband (who isnt' a metalhead). Best 3 minutes of the Olympics. Try going heavier. Lizard Skin. You'll love it.

As a french metal head and history nerd this show made me feel like life isnt that bad after all. Its a W on every level, peoples hated it or loved it but no one stayed unshooked. On every video there somenone to explain every détails and meanings a non french missed during the live. Its one step closer to get metal more mainstream and tolerated as any genra by the average public, taboos just needs to be broken and we might just have witnessed the moment having heavy metal normalised enough to be aired in prime time. That a cool thing despite what some grumpy gatekeepers may say

this is about french revolution . the beheaded lady is marie antoinette and the castle is the actual castle( le conciergerie ) were she was in jail waiting for her death. its a part of french history

For English speakers the letter ç with the little line curved underneath in French is pronounced like an S and the letter i is pronounced like the letter E but elongated a little E - ra
