That's what you call a tradesman a feel ashamed that iam a cnc programmer and I call my self a machinist

This isn't machining Its metal spinning. He is shaping sheet metal. notice there are no chips. I am a cnc and manual grinder. His tolerance it probably ±.5". It looks harder than it is. And yes i have done this before.

he's not turning, but spinning....a huge difference. spinning of thin metals is almost always done by hand except in production and even then, there are mass produced products spun by hand. You could do this on a lathe but it would still have to be done by hand. he's not taking metal away but reforming it.

I agree with you that complacency will get you into trouble. I think 5000 RPM is a little much though...maybe 450-500 tops on that piece. Either RPM if that comes off in motion safety glasses won't help. These pieces are spun onto a form and locked in so it is pretty safe...as long as you don't get complacent.
@iwannadothat112 жыл бұрын
what? do you really think that guy does not know what he is doing? I'v trained under and worked with some of the industries best. In 24yrs I have seen some incredible things.The job that guy is doing is not undertaken by an apprentice....years of experience. But thanks for commenting on my comment, please re-read and think about what I said. This was an excellent video to display that mans skill.

depends on the quantity. many mass produced products are still spun by hand, especially if they are of thin metal. street light reflectors is one example. this piece may be one of a kind so a man is better and faster than machine. cnc metal spinning to me would be very expensive for one up spinning.

brilliant, and probably another art-form on it's way out, but one would think that forming something like this with a press might be more practical? Or are we talking one-off designs, in which case this makes more sense. Still would love to learn to do this.

Thank you for you kind comments, this is a small batch job for us (Max of 100), metal spinning has a couple of advantages over pressing, one of which is to maintain a uniform wall thickness of material over the entire component where as a press may drag and thin some areas, HTH :)

Amazing work... puzzling why he sometimes uses one cylinder to hold against and most of the times both.

Thank you for your comments, the only reason that 2 pegs are used instead of 1 is for extra grip by the spinners hand :)

we are a metal spinning shop in portland oregon. The customer pays for all costs of tooling, after we quote the price of the job. whether we make 4 parts or 400, its the customers decision. we have to decide if making tooling for just 4 parts is worth our time aswell.

How is the form created for this hand process and how is the material held in place for working?
@MetspinMetalSpinners9 жыл бұрын
Material is clamped in place with a face plate and the aluminium is literally pushed with a hand tool to form the shape, HTH
@jon0n0n13 жыл бұрын
@ThePress1000 Can I suggest you look at the website of the video's owner? Hand metal spinning is not a process well suited to mass production, but it is a process extremely well suited to limited runs, even one off items. In such circumstances the cost of labour obviously has to be considered against the tooling cost of alternative production methods.

why can't this be done in a single motion with a press of some sort?
@nexizen10 жыл бұрын
You wouldn't do this with a press. The amount of force necessary would be astronomical. I could see this being done with a mold and molten metal, but I assume there is some strength gained from this particular method.
@RDJim10 жыл бұрын
Andrew Smith Not sure I agree Andrew. I've seen some pretty big forge presses in operation and they squish 6 inch diameter titanium bar stock with ease. This stuff is think sheet metal it would appear. A simple extrusion press should do it.... but then again, I'm no machinist.
