I learned more from watching your video than I have learned from any foreman I have worked with before. I have been working construction for 5 years now and everytime I asked someone information about blue prints I would always get turned away. I've built all this before. After watching your video it finally clicked in my head. Thank you. I will pass this video on to my friends.

That's one of my pet peeves. When are a journeyman or an apprentice. Not being involved in the drawings to see exactly what you're building. Vertical wall assembly, very important to know. I am a foreman for a union metal stud framing outfit in Alaska. I don't keep my team in the dark at all, in fact the opposite. I am also determined to sharper than I was the day before.

Alot of times they dont want you to know too much they dont want you getting better then them and they dont want you taking their job i found this to be the case alot. Ive forgot some of the stuff hes doing and have done tons myself im looking for assistant super or working foreman job I still enjoy work but years of framing and drywall got a double fused spine. I bought some books years ago they are great and even old bosses used to copy pages to share info with the newer guys Im gonna pull them back out now to get some refreshing out of those too. Get yours get the knowledge get the experience and get your money. Dont let know hold you down. There seems to be some good paying jobs out there today better then 25 years ago, and Im seeing alot of opportunities out there in the Trades and im bound to go get mine. Take care brothers and be safe. Sharp stuff, dont take a lift up without seeing where your wires are and dont stuff eachother in the face handing studs up. Out in front of eachother and communication. I got some slices and dices slipped on a wet roof doing Apple Store for the release of the Iphone. Almost went down on my neck luckily I only cut my forearm all the way across the bottom massive cut. Sliced a wrist one time as well. Take care.

@ConstructionKronies

Yes, every wall that goes u\s structure has to have slot track. We cut the stud anywhere from 3/4" to 1" shorter and we put the screws just below the half way of the slot. You can also take them out.

can you use metal studs to build temporary office pods without fixing the studs to the wall for support? It would be a square box about 10x12.
@ConstructionKronies
@ConstructionKronies 9 ай бұрын
You sure can. What we have done too is just double sided foam tape, two runs, on the bottom track so we don't make holes in the floor. Cross brace with 4" to 6" flat stock to keep square and if you can brace to the deck above then tbar (suspended ceiling grid.) The walls just have to be 6" above the ceiling.

Yes sorry for the late reply sometimes replies to replies get lost, KZbin needs a better way to tell us. For STC (sound rating) you can insulate, use 5/8" drywall, even go 2 layers of 5/8" both sides, use green glue (soundproofing glue) in between layers or resilient channel.

What it the maximum height you can frame using a single stud? I have a bay with a 25-foot ceiling, and the longest studs I could find are 20 ft. I wonder how can I frame that.
@ConstructionKronies
@ConstructionKronies Ай бұрын
Just call the local steel stud drywall supplier like Foundation Building Material and order custom length. I've used studs that are 40' long, I've had studs rolled to size right on site with portable machines if they can't fit on the truck. 25' is a very standard length you won't have any problem. Just google drywall supplier in your area and call a couple for pricing.

Great video, and honestly as a DIY’er it really helps. Question, I’m planning to add a room in my condo unit, as per the builder’s layout plan. The floor is all vinyl laminate. Should the floor be removed or can I install the steel tracks on top of it? Thanks
@ConstructionKronies
@ConstructionKronies 9 ай бұрын
Right on!! Yes for sure you can put the track right on top of the vinyl! Just beware, if you ever want to remove the vinyl it will be a hassle to cut the edges around the walls. Most of the time we just put a new 1/4" subfloor over the vinyl for hardwood or carpet. Its very challenging to remove vinyl, it takes a large machine to do it proper / quick.
@andyo.4235

@@ConstructionKronies thanks a lot. But just to be clear, the vinyl i'm referring to are the floating vinyl planks flooring. Not sure if you responded with the glued-on squared tiles in mind, which i totally agree, those are a pain in the neck to remove. So, would that be okay, or should I remove a section of vinyl planks and then install the tracks? Cheers!

Do you use 4" stud for the ceilings or 6" what span can you go with 5/8" sheet?
@ConstructionKronies
@ConstructionKronies Жыл бұрын
Mostly 3-5/8 if nothing goes on top. Go bigger both stud width and drywall, maybe add 3/4" ply if you plan to put anything heavy on it. You can really go as big as you want, brace it proper, run furring bar on top with hanger wires to eyelegs in the ceiling, they have for steel self drilling and concrete you can shoot them in with a Hilti. Like tbar but for drywall ceilings. Hope this makes sense.

So the corrugated metal roof decking you chose to “shoot” into instead of a self tapping screw was sufficient support for top track, is it common to be able to make protrusions into the roof decking? I have to frame some walls in a commercial application and I’m more of a residential contractor, Thanks!
@ConstructionKronies
@ConstructionKronies Жыл бұрын
Yes, so it's actually not corrugated roofing panels, it's qdeck. On top of the deck there will be another 8" at least of material before the gravel or sbs. Only shoot to qdeck when it is full of concrete. We use heavy gauge framing screws to screw the track to it. Hope that helps my man!

@ConstructionKronies
@ConstructionKronies 8 ай бұрын
No we wouldn't screw to a metal roof, what that is -- is metal decking we call qdeck it goes below the roof or is used between floors. Sometimes filled with concrete if between floors. When it's on the roof the next layer will be roof board, rigid insulation and so on depending on if it's sbs, modified or metal standing seam. It's I think 18 gauge usually so use heavy gauge self taping screws.

@ConstructionKronies
@ConstructionKronies 8 ай бұрын
You can get track that bends now. Draw the circle on the floor even if its a finished floor just tape down some hard board and draw on that. Then make the top and bottom track, forming it to that circle. Then laser up with a couple pin lasers 2 opposite edges to install the top track. Set a line laser to elevation and check your stud lengths, cut them, install a few to get the bottom track on (still checking with the pin lasers that it lines up with the top. After that just finish studding it out and then wrap with 1/4" or 1/2" drywall.

To be honest with you, I'm not sure. The rod is usually bolted in before we start by the iron worker. If the soffit needs any structural reinforcement the specifications will surely tell you. What methods are available in attaching/connecting pre-sheathed 8'w x 10't steel stud walls, vertically from 1st floor to 2nd floor & 2nd floor to 3rd floor ? Sheer cassettes are already built into our wall panels.
@ConstructionKronies
@ConstructionKronies 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, I'm not a fan of this method, panels are a real pain in the butt. However, after the panel is in place we just drill 1/4" to 3/4" bolts or rod into the concrete and fasten down nut and washer. 9/16" to 3/4" #8 or #10 hex self tapers for the top if steel or just hammer drill if concrete like the bottom. If it's suspended outside like curtain wall you need to pre-install clips with hitting shots or pin boots then 4 screws into a stud.

By code can you use it Stud Crimper or you need to use only screws?
@ConstructionKronies
@ConstructionKronies Жыл бұрын
I don't believe it is code. What you need to know is if it is in the construction specifications either in the contract documents (drawings, specifications) or product details. They will tell you what type to use and where to use them. If it is not specified I would say use what you want. At the end of the day the drywall will hold it all together if your screws are in the right spot. I think it is industry best practice to at least screw 1 side in and crimp the backs, I know guys who crimp only the top back. If you can keep studs proper on center, and square go for it. We screw them in always so its faster to drywall and better to tape and so on. Its important to have square studs and screw the soft side in the bevel first. That way the sheets won't pop out and give your walls humps.

Great video quick question my plans say to extend the wall 6 inches above the ceiling why is that? Is it so you stop with the t bar and then do separate rooms or is it for soundproof or fireproof? Can you let me know? Thank you.
@ConstructionKronies
@ConstructionKronies Жыл бұрын
Great question, it's just a reference that your walls only have to be 6 inches above tbar and not all the way to the deck. So say tbar is at 9 foot you can use 10 foot studs for the walls, it doesn't have to be exact just a minimum of 6imches. Drywall too, technically your walls will be at 10' 1/2" so you can keep your drywall a 1/2" off the floor and use 10' sheets or cut your sheets to 9' 6" .

They will be coming back bro I promise, work has been just so nuts I haven't had any time to program a new stream in obs. I'll be live at some point today from the studio. My apologies bro. I miss them a lot myself.

I appreciate the information, I've been watching BritishGrypsumUK vids the past few hours. I need to see what our suppliers here have. Those bulkheads in the restaurants hold big menus screens (tvs), millwork and so on that's why I beef them up. I need to catch up I know we have all kinds of new cool stuff. Man I don't know why we get different material these days, the boards in the UK look solid.

why can't we build houses like this?!
@ConstructionKronies
@ConstructionKronies Жыл бұрын
Ive done 3 houses with steel, we are working on one right now. Will be back on that job next week. They still aren't doing it right but if I was designing it I would do it like we do in commercial for sure. We talk about this a lot. I have tried to educate the builders on how to do it proper but they keep going back to panels and it doesn't work with panels. (Pre built 10x10 sections)

@@shaneash1598 HAHA yeah man we have been seeing so much of this out there and is why I am trying to help. Mostly cheap labour is the reason for all the shit work. Canada right now is so bad we are literally driving the modern day slave trade with these unskilled cheap workers its very sad for everyone.

What is your ceiling attachment detail for the top track of the hulk head to the roof? You’re not screwing into the ceiling panels are you? Serious question, not a critiquing tone, just super curious
@ConstructionKronies
@ConstructionKronies 7 ай бұрын
Yes we screw the top track to the q deck if it's hollow or shoot it with direct fastening tool like hilti or ramset if it's filled with concrete. The roof itself will start 3 to 6" above the top flute so you never have to worry about holes in it.
