Not many people understand that playing for yourself using a cabinet is one thing (just to have fun and awesome and aggressive chunkiness), and recording it and mixing is another thing, which may require dialling the things differently.

I'm a bedroom player and I play through a 5150 Iconic 15w, with a Tubescreamer TS7 pedal. I set my amp's gain no higher than 3/10 when I use the normal TS9 switch on my overdrive. I set my amp gain between at around 1.5/10 when I have the Tubescreamer on the "Hot" setting (which supposed to sound like having two Tubescreamers turned on). My amp has more gain than I could ever need. The only time I crank the gain is if I'm not using my Tubescreamer. Though I've found that going past 4/10 on the gain without the Tubescreamer makes the distortion sound squashed without actually doing anything.

So many guitar players forget that the bass can do the .....bass in a mix a high mid guitar tone will always cut

@@jasonstallworth when you hear guitar tones stripped from albums it’s frightening how thin and trebly they actually are,we are all guilty of chasing the chunk 🤣😜

This is Some of the best advice I’ve ever been given. Thanks again ! 🤘🏽I’m also Using a 5153 el34 with these settings but recording with 2 mics. The tone blew me away!

Excellent series Jason! A great look at some of the intricacies of the recording process. I've gone back and forth with real amps or plugins, but think I'm going to use both on my next tune and see what I come up with! 🤘🎸
@jasonstallworth4 жыл бұрын
There's definitely no harm in using both!! I'm actually doing the same. I plan to record the rhythm tracks with a real amp, but for some of the leads, cleans and there are some ambients parts for some songs, I may use plugins for that.
@Namelessforever_4 жыл бұрын
I’m really digging this series Jason!! Have you ever considered recording your amp with a load box and IR’s instead of using mics? I’m curious to know your thoughts on that. Also, I bought the evh 50 watt el34 head and I’m loving it man!! Really liked that opening riff you were playing btw!
@jasonstallworth4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I've never liked using IRs, to be honest. If I'm using any type of plugins, I just use the entire amp sim. But when I'm recording with a real amp, I want that full effect on the air push from the speaker and also the experience of recording with an amp.

Just found your channel. Great content! This one is really helpful. I find that I always overdo it on highs and presence for some reason i think. It sounds great in the studio but awful in the mix.

You never quite mentioned where you typically dial your resonance in; are you around 12'o clock?
@jasonstallworth3 жыл бұрын
Good question...yeah, that's about where it is in my studio. But that's something you really have to adjust according to the environment you're in.
@TheTimeProphet3 жыл бұрын
Isn't it important to turn the amp up to 11? I recorded the output from my JMP1 the other day, and felt I lost some notes in the mix. Perhaps I will try to lower my gain. By way do use a DI unit to record the clean and record the amp as well?
@jasonstallworth3 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the amp. But in most cases the louder your volume is, the less gain you need.
@TheTimeProphet3 жыл бұрын
@@jasonstallworth My JMP1 has an amp simulator and it is output at line level, so I probably shouldn't have to worry so much about gain level
@dantrag28903 жыл бұрын
The only thing I do differently now as of today is use an EQ pedal. Other than that, we have the same brand of amp, same pedal chain, and even the same haircut.
@jasonstallworth3 жыл бұрын
I've thought about getting an EQ pedal at some point! The haircut is a must...hassle-free!
@dantrag28903 жыл бұрын
@@jasonstallworth Try it! It helps tighten up your tone, and eliminates the mud & flub feel of a tube amp. Put it in the effects loop before the modulation.

@jasonstallworth Жыл бұрын
I'm not the best at mimicking other tones. I always encourage folks to go for their sound and style. There are so many other elements that equate to tone like the amp, pickups, guitar, player, etc
