They made the song after hearing the worries of thousands of teens from Japan. So in Japan when you turn 18 they can vote on political issues but the older generations belittle their opinions like “you’re to young you don’t have any say in what goes on in politics” so they are frustrated because they are considered adults at 18 but yet their opinions don’t matter. So after hearing around a thousand videos of teenagers saying how frustrating it is one ok rock made the song we are for them. And had a special performance called fes18 with the 1000 teens. It was very touching and I believe that you would love to see that performance.

I just discovered this band, and love this song. Minutes ago I watched a live version with the kids singing along with them, I only wish the whole video had english subtitles, so I could understand what he said to all the kids before they played the song, but it seemed obvious that it was a very heartfelt message to them.

Taka in the clean versions on the albums is always impressive, but Taka's voice mid-tour is just magical. Only once have I experienced him off-key and that was due to poor equipment. Toru once said that they consider their albums to be an invitation to their concert. The real version of their music is a live version. :)

Just to give you a little background on why the audience is so into the song... The song was written for the younger generation 18 year olds. They had young adults submit videos of them, and the band as a whole watched and every one of them and chose 1000 of them to sing this song for the 18 fes. That's a very emotional version to check out. But basically, when the song was written, the legal voting age in Japan had been changed to 18. A lot of the older generation was not for that, thinking that these young adults should just work. The band usually ends their shows with this song because of the impact and message it has. Even as an older guy, this song gets me every time. I found it at a very rough part of my life. And it helped me through. Great reaction! There are a couple of other Japanese bands that you should check out as well!

Just to let you know a little bit about the band - It consists of 4 members, Takahiro Moriuchi, or just Taka for short is the vocalist and IMHO one of the best rock voices still out there; Toru is the guitarist and the leader of the band; The bassist you like a lot is Ryota, who is actually married to Avril Lavigne’s sister; finally Tomoya is the drummer and a drumming genius. They don’t have quite the worldwide following of BTS yet, but hopefully are trending that way. They’re obviously huge in Japan, but are trying to blaze the trail for Japanese artists outside of their homeland by transitioning to English and playing lots of small shows to win over crowds in the US and Europe. This song We Are is actually one of Jungkook’s favorites! They also did a short rock version dancing to Dynamite just for fun which you can search up… 😅 Finally, I’d probably agree with the other commenter that the Renegades MV is a good next step. It’s a fully English song that was a collaboration with Ed Sheeran. A lot of lyrics are really meaningful and that song is no exception…

Ohhh can’t wait to hear it! And thank you for the info! I am seriously loving what I’m hearing from them so far and it’s weird lol for me this is the exact opposite way I normally get into bands, like I’ll hear their music THEN see if they are good live but with One Ok Rock I’ve only heard them live and I know they crush it! I love it!
@JL-sc3pi

I said before in a previous comment that I’m like you - came from rock and metal and that BTS has been a real eye-opener for me - I’m a die hard ARMY forever… But musically, and from the rock band based background that I came from, OOR just hits different. You’ll hear lots of suggestions for next songs and Renegades is a nice next step for sure. However, their older catalogue is heavier stuff and they draw a lot from late 90’s and early 2000’s emo / modern rock. In fact, they were scheduled to tour with Linkin Park just before Chester left us, and during the US tour the moment of silence in Take What You Want became a tribute to him. I naturally gravitate towards their older heavier stuff but completely understand the musical choices that they’re making trying to break into the international market. If you want an idea of their heavier stuff and to hear Taka scream Deeper Deeper would be a great choice… A last tidbit is that OOR is the favorite rock band for Luke from G.O.T. Games that you interviewed for the Breaking the Stereotype series. Cheers and freakin’ toodles!!

Please, trry some older song like Liar, Chaosmyth, Clock strikes, The beginning..there are hundreds of great songs to choose. And if you would like to hear other side of Takas voice, please, just watch Karasu live with orchestra, Wherever you are. I followed them almost from their debut. A nd ...Taka is from very musicaly gifted family, his younger brother si gs in another band My First story, they both look much alike, even their voices are similar..try My first story - Alone.

This is a comment from Japan. I turned 50 and became a fan of theirs this year. I've noticed that the comments on their songs are broadly spread from people in their fifties to people in their seventies who are the same age as me. Many comments have been written that they were attracted to their songs by experiencing life milestones and sad events.

I went to ONE OK ROCK's very first 'one man live' (solo where they didn't have to share the stage with other bands to cover gig costs) at ShibuyaAX all the way back in 2008 when I was an exchange student in Japan. They were still a 5-piece then. Can confirm they've been incredible performers even since then, they were all only around 20 years old at the time with only one full album under their belts (they were promoting a mini album, Beam of Light) but were killing it. Insane talents, honestly. Taka's voice was as raw and emotional then as it is now, even without much life experience. AX was knocked down years ago and I don't recall the capacity, I think there was only around 2000 people there; but they managed to make it feel like an enormous arena performance.

One OK Rock routinely sells out concerts in Japan. They are seasoned performers so it’s kinda disappointing that they perform in such small venues in America. I am hoping they’ll be able to perform at Coachella or Lollapalooza next year. Kudos also to the Japanese audience. If you notice, they DO NOT have their phones out. They’re engaged which makes it so fulfilling to perform there. One song you should check out is the sing I Was King performed with a live orchestra.

We are They think that we're no one We're nothing, not sorry They push us It’s too late, it’s too late Not going back They think we are made up Of all of our failures They think we are foolish And that's how the story goes They stand for nothing They’re lifeless and cold Anything they say Will never break our hearts of gold When you're standing on the edge So young and hopeless Got demons in your head We are, we are No ground beneath your feet Now here to hold you 'Cause we are, we are The colors in the dark Now covered in madness But they just can't hurt us They tell us we're nothing Keep walking and let it go They are the weakest And don't even know Anything they say Will never break our hearts of gold When you're standing on the edge So young and hopeless Got demons in your head We are, we are No ground beneath your feet Now here to hold you 'Cause we are, we are The colors in the dark Never tell yourself You should be someone else Stand up tall and say I’m not afraid, I’m not afraid So never tell yourself You should be someone else Stand up tall and say I'm not afraid When you're standing on the edge So young and hopeless Got demons in your head We are, we are No ground beneath your feet Now here to hold you 'Cause we are, we are The colors in the dark

we need to talk about One Ok Rock, their music is amazing, their lyrics are insane and they only come at the right times. I became a big fan of the band, it became a dream to see them up close and feel this energy live must be something out of this wooorlld ♥️

Believe it or not, Taka was putting out this UNREAL performance while he was sick. This song was meant as a show of support for the young people of Japan, who at the time were publicly expressing depression and hopelessness about their future. We Are basically became their anthem.

Any of their live videos are amazing, especially when they add in an orchestra, it's a whole new experience. Check out Cry Out or I Was King.

Just stumbled on this reaction tonight and I love this band. This song is my favourite of them. BUT the BEST rendition is one where they sang with 1,000 18 yr olds that acted as like a backup choir for them. It is a magical performance. If you look for One ok Rock - We Are 18Fes that's the video. I think it was to celebrate Japan dropping the voting age from 20 to 18 or something like that. chills every time I watch it.

The whole world should know One Ok Rock, they are super talented! If you really liked it, watch the documentary they made in the pandemic. During the pandemic, they were missing doing shows, so they did a show without an audience and it was really cool, they had a lot of work and care to pass the same energy of listening to them live.

I really really hope you go back and revisit this song, but check out this version. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGa3naCMoZh4Zpo as of the time I put this comment in, it is still on youtube That one has English subtitles for his opening speech which is really key to set the tone and also for the lyrics. This performance is glorious and still gives me shivers and tears. It is in front of a small audience of 18 year olds from their hometown, ( I believe, I may be wrong about that) and specifically prepared for them. That version is everything the song was intended to be. Please give it another listen with that version because I have never heard another version as powerful and special.

What's amazing about OOR is that for all the Japanese bands that have toured in the US over the years, they are the only ones who seem to consistently sell out shows tour after tour - they are truly an amazing band and if you ever get the opportunity to see them live - take it!! I have seen them almost every single time they've come to the US and am always blown away by their performance. Also I am biased because these are my favorite songs, but I definitely recommend Clock Strikes and the 18Fes performance of We Are! You will get chills.
