Those tongs would be amazing if they were made of a bunch of custom ordered stock and parts. That you built this with parts you already had on hand is just showing off... Really nice work. Love that this doesn't require either a lot of space around the crucible OR transitioning from the lift tongs to the pour tongs. I haven't seen anything that does that as well as this.

Interesting & clever David especially for those just setting up & are a bit wary of accidents, but to be honest I use lift out tongs & ring shank as they use in commercial jobbing foundries & I've never had an incident with them in 50 odd yrs when I built my 1st foundry, [& burnt a few out along the way!! there was no internet then to make everyone an expert, just Terry Aspin's booklet as I believe you know & I used to cast mostly brass signs for a local wrought Iron company,I enjoy your posts but I'm too old to change now!! Graham.

When you roll a ring like that with a length of extra material could you feed it in the backside so that the excess material isn’t hitting the bench? Thanks for sharing.

Do you have a video on that ring roller? Is it homemade, it looks great!

You need to review someone's inverter welder ;-) Do Vevor do welders? They seem to be pushing stuff via YT atm

Looking good. Is this design still going strong or have you recreated it and changed stuff since ? Just got a furnace and the tongs it came with are not the best for pouring - I don’t suppose you’d be looking at creating these for sale would you ? Saves we looking for alternatives ! 😊

Furnace is working well.Any damage to the refractory can be easily repaired with fire cement. The tongs are really good. I would only use the supplied ones for adding metal to the crucible. Very dangerous gripping crucible with tongs for pouring. No plans to market my tongs.

While a nice design, if you had a MIG welder, you could have made that with almost no hardware. Hardware can and does loosen up over usage. But the design is interesting for sure... Thumbs Up!

By not welding though the design is adaptable to other size crucibles by swapping the jaws and is easily dismantled shoul anything need attention.

I came back from not having watched for a while. It was frustrating watching you use an adjustable spanner to waste some nuts and bolts. When even a novice stick weld would have been x10 better. You have all this fancy shit, yet you could not have put a few tack welds on there? Let me guess.. your welders a chinese freebee, and now its not working... 😂

Okay if you insist. But as customary, i came here to watch, not read or listen. Okay in response. I did not see a series of holes to adjust lip holder for differing crucible heights? That is the only thing that needs bolts and id add those extra holes to the design. Apart from that the arms can be bent slightly if need be. I trust you know an angle grinder makes all our metal projects adjustable. How many crucible sizes do you use with your furnace size? Hope you get your chinese welder working one day 👍

At first when I saw your comment I thought... someone who knows nothing, attacking a master. However, I did my due diligence research and now see that is not the case. You have been there, and done that. I was fascinated with your videos, particularly the home made furnace/ DIY aluminium foundry ones. I think we can all learn so much from those videos! Particularly: sitting your melting DIY paint tin furnace on the floor timbers of a raised verandah sitting your hair dryer/ blower on that timber floor sitting your flask to be poured on that timber floor your overcautious personal safety equipment including the old ugg boots and old dungars your welding gloves for safety, and the unique decision not to actually use them when pouring your careful carriage of dross from the crucible across the timber floor to the sheet of tin and ultimately, the sophisticated crucible tool you use, in comparison to myfordboy's basic attempt in this video I don't think it's great to rain on anyone's parade, but (to me) the stunning arrogance in manner and content of your posts set me aback. I always had the impression that orssies were casual, laid back, and generous.... but your posts are not like that. I do hope you were just having a bad day..... and actually are the sort of person that people would like to know.... like myfordboy. @@djpaulk

I have no use for a welder. I had a stick welder, never spent the time to learn to use it and gave it away. This project benefits from not being welded as it the jaws can be replaced to suit different crucibles.
@djpaulk
@djpaulk Жыл бұрын
@@myfordboyy the time you replace those jaws, after being in the furnace well used, you will be undoing those nuts and bolts with an angle grinder anyways. Learn to tack weld stick. Will take you a couple of hours to learn. You will save years of your life drilling and bolting as well as money on hardware. You should know that!

I like the Sovol printers. I have used 5 different models and they all work well. If it's big enough for you go for the SV06 sovol3d.com?sca_ref=895359.hScoXg1y01 SV06 Pro or SV01 Pro if you want larger.

You really need a PC. I belive there is a way to transfer files to the printer with an ipad using Octoprint but you would not be able to slice STL files on an ipad. If you want to print your own designs you will need a CAD program like Fusion 360 to create them first.

I think there is a possible development of your design. If the piece that hooks over the top of the crucible was on the fixed vertical 24 x 4 instead of the pivoting one it would be easier to locate it over the crucible and then rotate the other leg to clamp. The hook is at an angle when the legs are open.
@myfordboy
@myfordboy Жыл бұрын
The hook is not on the moving part but the fixed one. It has a slight twist so it locates squarly on the curved top of the crucible.
