Great reaction! "I can't believe they don't have a guitarist" - Watch their song "Run Away" and you'll see why they don't need one LOL

Thanks for this one! It's always fun to see someone discovering Dirty Loops for the first time, and have their minds blown by this insanely competent powerhouse of a group. They started the group as a hobby project in 2008, and never thought it would be anything other than that. In 2010 they put up a video on youtube (a cover of Lady Gaga's "Just Dance"), as a booking reference, to see if they could get a gig or two, just for fun, as they thought their music was way too unsexy for anyone to actually like it. Needless to say, they were completely wrong and a LOT of people absolutely loved it. Just about everything they've ever released is of this ridiculous musical quality, so if you consider checking out more of them, you could basically pick anything, and you more than likely won't be disappointed. They've all known each other and played together for 20+ years by now, in their late thirties. Jonah (keyboard/vocals) and Henrik (bass) even went to music elementary school together and met when Henrik was 11 and Jonah was 9. Aron (drums) comes from another part of Sweden and came along when he moved to Stockholm at the age of 16, to attend the same music high school as they did (he was in the year between the other two). Then they all attended Kungliga Musikhögskolan (Royal College of Music) in Stockholm, where Henrik and Aron studied jazz/rock, and Jonah opted for music production as his main subject. This is my absolute favourite by them, and in an interview with Bass Magazine Henrik said the following about writing "Work Shit Out": Bass Magazine: "“Work Shit Out” has a killer fretless, finger-funk bass line and it’s the most musically adventurous track on the EP." Henrik: "That’s how we conceived it, as a song that would evolve into a long improvised section with keyboard and drums solos. It started with Aron’s octave-jumping MIDI bass line. I wanted to simplify it a bit and remove one of the beats, but Aron insisted on his version, so I had to figure out how to play it because it’s a little unorthodox on bass. From there, Aron and I wrote the verse and the chorus, coming up with the one-note melody concept for the chorus. Then Jonah and Aron added all the harmonies. For Jonah’s solo, I stick pretty much to the root notes so he stretch and change the harmonies above them. It was a lot of fun to play the song live on a few gigs before the pandemic because it took different directions each time."

Your drummer is a smart guy. All 3 of them attended the Stockholm school of music in Sweden. They are managed by Quincy Jones. You just missed their tour of US and Canada. They were amazing in concert. I've seen some of your other videos and enjoyed them but this one locked me in so I had to subscribe. Looking forward to watching you react to some more tracks of theirs.

And, they don't need vocals, either, to blow you away. Check out their "Music for Lovers; Coffee Break is Over".

Great reaction. You clearly recognise how phenomenal Dirty Loops are. I too got into these 3 swedish geniuses by recommendation over breakfast after a Snarky Puppy gig. I guess this is yet another case of musicians' favourite musicians, as per Jacob Collier, Louis Cole, etc. Welcome to Dirty Loops, the most magical rabbit hole you could ever find.

Love Dirty Loops, if you choose to go down this path they have quite a lot that´ll blow your musical mind - try their latest "Run Away" for some awesomness - no way to go wrong with these 3 guys

As much as I would agree that this SHOULD be a model for pop... it just can't be. Impossible. These guys are WAY too skilled. This 'style' is far too complicated for 90% of wannabe's out there. Musicianship like this is RARE. These are top-tier studio quality pros who chose to get together and blow roofs off buildings. Masterful. Glad you liked this!!! Everything I have heard from them is outstanding.

Well I’m glad that your drummer friend turned you on to Dirty Loops, and you took the deep dive and jumped right in 👍 Yeah this trio has got it all, musicality and chops in spades, and no, they’re not super popular. I think it’s partially because you can’t put them into a box easily., and also because they’re not aiming for big, commercial success, but rather do what they love doing, and in the way they like to do it. Henrik, bass, once said that any gig has to be fun, and he never wants to do a ‘sucky’ gig ;) It’s pop, it’s funk, it’s RnB, some classical, some jazz, lots of rock. All three of them have had slightly different musical influences when growing up, and prog and fusion features strongly for all of them. But Henrik just said in an interview that he doesn’t consider himself a jazz player, although he and Aron, drums, studied rock and jazz at the music con. There are many reasons why they’re not mainstream, but they sure appeal to a wide variety of people, musicians and just music lovers alike. You nailed it when saying that they bring the best of both worlds -the pop and also the complexity. Since they have no guitarist they have to work in unusual ways. Jonah, vocals and keys, and Henrik both make up for it in their way of playing. With this song, I like how Aron foreshadows his solo all along, way before it starts. When he finally lets loose, it’s like you could hear it coming :) The prog and Snarky Puppy comparisons are all pertinent. Henrik talks about that in a recent interview, how he’s digging their music, all the parallels between them, but also the differences-. Jonah really appreciates Louis Cole from Knower-. There’s so much to find out about Dirty Loops, their story, influences and what makes them who they are. Go down that rabbit hole, and you’ll be most likely constantly inspired and awed. And yeah, their mixing and mastering engineer is phenomenal, too 🔥 This track is from their second album Phoenix, and it’s in my car stereo, together with their first double album Loopified, on constant rotation. Go the car stereo!!! ✌️🤘✌️🤘 And hey, did you mention painting? I’m super curious… Loved your comments and how their music can be simultaneously dark and also have a good vibe…they’ve got it all! really appreciate your passion for music, and how it inspires you 👍 Thanks again for sharing, glad this vid made it through the copyrights process 🙏 (Yeah, the vid was a little blurry, but it didn’t take away too much for me) Hoping for more Dirty Loops from you 👍

Good reaction. You realized very fast that their songs are popsongs and could be, with some modification be big hits. Simplyfy, shorten and adjust them for radio. With that being said, I am happy they are doing their thing. Also, at the end of the video you will see that Quincy Jones was involved in this (not sure if someone said it already) and that should be because of Jonah who is a singer who can do a pretty good Michael Jackson as well. Google MJ tribute and you will find a concert where Jonah is singing a few of MJs songs with other stars.

Dirty Loops are Snarky Puppy level musicianship, but starting from a much more "pop" place. They are *so* good. :) edit: that was freaky - just as I was about to post this comment, you said "this is up there with Snark Puppy" o_O
