Frank sits down with Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth to discuss being fearless and the importance of keeping his music pure, the new album 'In Cauda Venenum', and the story of the latin title, the ease of writing this album, why he feels the Swedish version is the best one, the thought of this possibly being the last record he makes, and more!

Have you guys noticed his impacable English ??? No wonder why most of Scandinavian kids are fluent in two/three foreign languages before they graduate from high-school... (Just for the record: I’ve onece had a nice chat with Finnish girl, despide the fact that we both spoke in our second language: English) You can imagin my embarasment when she said: „I can speak German if you like”. Well..., I didn’t... I’m Polish... Besides very vogue rememberence of Russian alfabet, I can’t speak any other but my „Slavic Toung” Lol...

Wow . . . The thought of not having anymore Opeth albums is personally depressing as not having anymore Rush albums. But I hope we see each member create something spectacular. But I won't count them out yet. Though I totally understand that Mikael would like to do a wide variety of music. Been a fan since "Still Life" a few months after its release, and "reading" about them since 1995 and their debut "Orchid". So weird that I didn't listen/buy their albums back then, because the description of their music was so damn intriguing.

@@Red-Brick-Dream - You may be right. Kind of a "if you stop growing you are dying" type of outlook. If they had stopped growing and changing after Blackwater Park or even Watershed they might be all but forgotten by now. It's always been about evolution and delivering a new twist with this band and they've never let me down yet.

Nobody hates you Mikael, even if they don't like the new stuff. But I love, and I'm so hyped for the new record. SO HYPED. Believe me, I hate Watershed and Ghost Reveries more than the last trio. I'm old school, My Arms Your Hearse guy, but man, do whatever you want I'll walk behind you. You wanna go back to the roots? Go back. Keep doing this? Do it. Just don't turn into pop music like Steven Wilson did. You can make prog music like 70s but you can't do pop music like 70s or 80s.

People who get mad at a band for changing its style are a bit strange. You can still always listen to the old records.....and I still do. But I'm glad that Opeth is still making music that sounds like no one else and exploring new musical territories.

I appreciate Mikael's outlook on doing what he wants and respect his fearlessness towards his passion, that being said, I hate everything he has done since heritage.

Rolling Stone interview maybe the same day lol cos same shirt and same day published on you tube ha ha ha but seriously, I am glad that everything gets more exposure now much easier once people want to see it...too many people to go hard core non conformist or ivory tower/fortress of solitude. We all gotta live together, and it's all good anyhow, really. #metalistruth #thekidsarealright #terrans

Question for music fans: I have finally accepted digital music after holding out for a very long time. I swore that I would *always* continue to buy CDs. But now I am simplifying my life and purging many of my possessions. I have a Spotify subscription (and soon Tidal for the better sound quality) and I am ready to begin selling my CD collection. The dilemma is it really bothers me that artists are not properly compensated for their art due to the digitizing of music. I want to support my most favorite bands by buying their music, but I don't want anymore physical CDs or albums. How do I do this while maintaining a Spotify or Tidal subscription?

ruinsane100 When I met Gary Holt, I asked him a similar question and he told me that Exodus had gone from making money selling music to being a group of traveling t-shirt salesmen. He was joking, but the point was that no metal band makes significant money from streaming. If you want to support the artist, buy merchandise, go to shows, and whenever possible, buy stuff directly from the band.

@@bradcarter223 Hi Brad, thanks for the suggestion. I do go to a ton of shows but buying merch goes against my whole "simplifying" goal. We're actually trying to downsize significantly to move into a much smaller house, so we're only keeping necessities and things we absolutely can't part with. I feel terribly guilty streaming artists' music tho. We haven't bought a CD in probably over a year. :(

I have been holding out, buying CD's when I can. I live in a ridiculously rural area, go to the Only record store around once a month, went last week and the place was damn near gutted! They blamed it on Corona, but I think they are trying to do away with CD's all together. Oh well, I'm old. I guess I have all the music I will ever be into. Outside of OPETH and TOOL releases, I will do without. I like album covers. Like the artwork, the packaging, the collecting. It's all part of the metal thrill from when I was a kid, I dont want to see it go away, in the brave new world. I'm just gonna ride my brontosaurus off onto the sunset....

@@saltpeter7429 Hey there Pete! How nice that you live in a "ridiculously rural" area. Since I posted that a year ago I haven't bought a single CD. And with the virus... well... none of us are going to shows. So much for supporting our favorite artists. i REALLY miss concerts and often wonder (worry) how metal shows will ever be the same again. Here's hoping 2021 will be a little more sane!
