Yes, they should sometimes, but the problem with that is that the final product tends to be more incoherent. With the ideas focused, the songs are WAY more cohesive. Bilateral is one of their best albums because it was chaotic and cohesive at the same time, but it is not something easy to repeat at all. Look at TPS, fun and full of skill, but lacking cohesion. From Coal (their best album imo) onwards they evolved because they started to focus their ideas instead of throwing them all out without reason. The current problem for old fans is not the way they make songs, but the ideas they experiment with, which are not easy to get used to for some people
