“I think every Metallica record has its own journey, its own story, its own path forward. They’re all unique, and I think you accept all of them. The one common thread between all the Metallica records is that they’re done with the best intent, the purest intent, and always an attempt in that moment to write the best songs to create the best collection of songs.”

If every person who claims “Lars sucks” knew just how much work and time he puts in to MetallicA behind the scenes, they would think otherwise. Lars is one of the hardest working most driven musicians of all time.

Many people predate on negativity, just look at society. That's how it is. There were periods, throughout the 21st century, in which Lars, obviously, wasn't delivering the best in live performances. Yeah, it's not cool, but doesn't erase the fact that he IS a great drummer, and the studio and even live albums are proof to that.

@@xPaPaDx True. Very creative as well, one of the few metal drummers from his generation - and not only - who doesn't sound like a predictable programmed rythm box. You can always capture lots of small details, throughout the albums.

Absolutely and not only that, but I will state that his style of drumming is what helped make metallica be what they are. His unconventional style fits perfectly. Where another drummer who might be better wouldn't have made the music as it is.

If James is the soul of Metallica, then Lars is the heart. Lars is my favorite member of this amazing band. They (unlike other classic bands, like Van Halen) treat their fans with respect. And part of what makes it fun to listen to them is the different eras...different sounds...different styles.
@authorrayrogers

I like your perspective, but I've always seen it slightly different. James is definitely the soul of Metallica, but I think Lars is the mind. He's always the driving force, both in the studio and on tour. His sense of aesthetics is absolutely impeccable. I think Kirk is the heart of the group. He's always been the calm center between the frenetic energies of James and Lars. I think Robert expands on that as well. He takes that heart and brings us into it. He's our link with the energy of Metallica. Always excited, always grateful, always exceptional. I love this band and always will.

Jason Newsted on Lars: "If we wouldn't have had him and his ability to anticipate, to predict, to know geography, to understand what country and what city and what did what at what time and all this stuff, no way Metallica would be what they were. "We're digging what were doing" As a musical artist THIS is more important than anything. Whether people like it or not Metallica have found a groove and sound that they like and enjoy. Lars has said many times they don't like looking back and repeating old ground they've done that already and better than anyone, that was a style they were feeling then, the 90s was music they were feeling then and this is the new era sound of what they like and are feeling now. Its real.

Metallica is a great band, Lars, James, and Kirk have been threw a lot. Most bands would not still be playing at their age. When they added Robert to the band, he was a great addition with energy and fresh ideas. Everyone may not like the type of music they play, but you will have to admit for they are one of the best bands to still be together, and producing great music. When Metallica is finished playing a a lot of people will realize how good they were.

@@andrewwebster2598 Yes, but part of the appeal for Metallica fans is that there truly ARE so many eras. Other bands, the only way you can tell which era it is might be their hair or the quality of the video being shown. For Metallica, they truly went through different sounds and types of songs. It makes their entire history more interesting for fans. When LOAD came out, for instance, so many people complained. Now, a lot of hardcore fans look back on that era with real appreciation because it was so different.

The "feeling of disbelief" is a sentiment shared by your long-time fans in a big way. Personally, I've described it as pure gratitude. The first clear realization of it for me was with the release of 72 Seasons; specifically sitting in the theater listening party with friends and family - all of which are long-time fans as well. As I was listening to the album, I was overcome with an overwhelming sense of thankfulness that my favorite band in the world has been making great music for nearly the entirety of my life. The realization that this band that changed my perception of music back in '86 is still massively relevant and active in 2023 is... mind blowing. A good friend and I got Snakepit tickets for both shows in St. Louis and made the trip from Chicago. I can tell you that the feeling of disbelief and thankfulness during that experience was enhanced to levels I cannot properly describe. In short, we share that feeling with you, and we thank you for what you do - and everything you have done 🤘

It's such a rare and almost unique thing, to hear such thoughtful, meaningful questions from a person who really cares. It's not just 'oh, I'm with a celebrity, look, how great I am!'-sort of questions. They are really great fun to listen to.

Lars is the coolest and most easy going rock star I have ever met. He is the reason Metallica is so succssful and he takes the time to talk with everyone he meets backstage and is very genuine when speaking to his fans. I was lucky enough to see them on their first 3 tours and meet them when they were playing clubs and theatres and nothing tops that intimacy so it's hard to watch them play stadums now.

Lars is the reason I started playing drums over 20 years ago. Although I've gotten way more technical and groove oriented than he's ever been in that time, he's solid as a rock and the reason the band is as good as they are. Another one of my huge influences, Joey Jordison, even stuck by Lars. His contribution to the songwriting process is the reason they are still killing it to this day.

Lars is great, gets too much hate. He is very responsible for the music we all love, his ear to the ground in the early 80s helped shape an entire shift in metal music and create a new sub genre. He lives and breathes his band and always has, he is a huge music fan, always hands on with the songwriting, he is a huge fan and cheerleader of his own bandmates. Hes great with fans and is always very courteous and welcoming. He is also absolutely bullet proof and has taken so much hate and let it bounce off him. People mistske his very danish sense of humour as arrogance and they need to realise Lars was right about Napster and to get over his St.Anger snare...its been 20 years 😂

@@shaxow1142I guarantee that most people who have knocked Lars have air drummed his parts at least once. While Lars isn't anywhere near the most competent drummer, I see him as having a similar approach to drummers like Ringo, not stylistically obviously, but in the sense that both write drums just to suit the song and nothing more. People get lost on the technical side but don't realize that the energy Lars brings to his parts cannot be replicated.

Everyone who ever complained about the noise can blame this man right here! What an impact he's had on my life! His playing was absolutely ground breaking. In the early days and especially on "Justice" he delved into an innovative way of playing that would catapult a whole new legion of followers. He and Metallica became the wave that every one else was riding. From there on Lars became the Phil Rudd of heavy drumming. Ultimate goove oriented, laying back and making it swing. He's the mastert at that! Big fat drums with tons of feel! Love you Lars! Cheers from Thunder Bay!

Y’all wouldn’t had to deal with a “Lock down” if y’all were in Florida. Just saying. Either way I have been a diehard fan since 1995 and will always go to concerts that y’all have in the Central Florida area for as long as I live or y’all retire. Seen y’all twice so far, first time was December 1999 at Tropicana Field and the second time was in July 2017 at Citrus Bowl Stadium(Camping World Stadium) both times were the best days of my life. More importantly the time in 2017 was the first time I was able to experience y’all’s performance with my best friend and my son who was 17 at the time,(43 years old myself) by the way.

Love how Lars said absolutely nothing about James going to rehab, even though he was asked about both occasions, respecting that thats for James to talk about if he chooses to.

Lars really is the "leader" of Metallica. He kept things together after Cliff died, Jason leaving, James going to rehab etc. Without him, we would be only talking about Metallica in the past tense.
