This song touches on multiple subjects including addiction, homelessness and forgiveness but primarily conveys a sense of regret. The protagonist desires forgiveness not only for what he has done but what he knows he will continue to do. My eyes seek reality (He tries to see the truth) My fingers seek my veins (He feels for his veins, so he can stick himself with a needle) There's a dog at your back step, He must come in from the rain (He tries to find shelter from the harsh conditions he finds himself in I fall 'cause I let go (He gives up) The net below has rot away (Nothing/no-one is there to catch him as he falls, all his chances are up) The trash fire is warm (The only comfort he has is that of a trash fire giving him heat and light) No one's safe from the storm (No-one is safe from the effects of drugs) And I can't bare to see, What I've let me be, So wicked and worn (He himself does not know who he has become and shows fatigue from the abuse of drugs) So as I write to you (He is writing the suicide note/letter) What is done and to do (What he has done in his life, and what he is going to do to end it) Maybe you'll understand (Understand all the pain he has been through) And won't cry for this man, 'cause low man is due (He is not worth your tears) Please forgive me (Self explanatory really, he wants forgiveness) Touch clean with a dirty hand (He is cleaning the needle) I touched the clean to the waste (Injects the “clean” needle into his “wasted” skin) So low the sky is all I see (He is in his grave looking up) So you bring this poor dog in from the rain, Though he just wants right back out again (You can give him shelter and put him in rehab, but he just wants to get back out there and look for his next fix) And I cry, to the alley way, Confess all to the rain (With no other shelter, he rests in an alleyway and confesses his sins in the form of the note/letter) But I lie, lie straight to the mirror (He even lies to himself that everything will be alright) One I've broken, to match my face (His abuse of drugs has taken its toll physically)

That's a very literal interpretation. I'm horrible at interpreting art, but I guess the interpretation is in the eye of the beholder. I remember in summer school they had us interpret any song we wanted so I chose "Drive" by the Deftones. I said "oh it's about a couple of friends chillin' and just driving around.", but then the teacher actually kinda blew me away when he said something like "sure, on the surface that's what it's about, but when he sings 'Im your passenger', what is that implying? When you're a passenger, you're submitting to the whims of the driver." I don't know, it stuck with me and made me think differently about songs. Not saying you're wrong, because that's how I interpreted this song in high school, but that teacher really made me think that often times lyrics have deeper meanings that I could be missing entirely.

James' lyrics are so damn amazing here 🔥👊 - .. So as I write to you Of what is done and to do Maybe you'll understand And won't cry for this man 'Cause low man is due Please forgive me My eyes seek reality My fingers feel for faith Touch clean with a dirty hand I touched the clean to the waste The trash fire is warm But nowhere safe from the storm And I can't bare to see What I've let me be So wicked and worn So as I write to you, yeah Of what is done and to do Maybe you'll understand And won't cry for this man 'Cause low man is due Please forgive me Please forgive me Please forgive me So low the sky is all I see All I want from you is forgive me So you bring this poor dog in from the rain Though he just wants right back out again And I cry, to the alley way Confess all to the rain But I lie, lie straight to the mirror The one I've broken, to match my face The trash fire is warm But nowhere safe from the storm And I can't bare to see What I've let me be So wicked and worn So as I write to you Of what is done and to do Maybe you'll understand And won't cry for this man 'Cause low man is due Please forgive me Please forgive me So low the sky is all I see All I want from you is forgive me So you bring this poor dog in from the rain Though he just wants right back out again My eyes seek reality My fingers seek my veins

Game of thrones? Really? I've never watched it. But this song I know from last century. It hit even harder after I'd accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior, for some reason. I don't cry much, but when I do, have to exchange my contact lenses. And that's OK, bless Metallica, bless you all, in Jesus' name. Amen.

The song is very cool, one of the best from Metallica. But, Sorry, dude: 'my fingers seek my veins' means that this song is about a poor castaway man addicted to heroine, and not about a knight in the middle age. So this clip is a very big blunder.
@sirkjohno01297 жыл бұрын
György Soros then again, wouldn't drug abuse and self wear and tear come from the same line of regret as being the sole reason of your Kingdom collapse? I love this song so much and even though I don't watch Game Of Thrones I can still feel some link between the middle ages and the message of this song.

The lyrics do seem to be about a homeless junkie with extremely low self-esteem. All the Metallica albums have at least one really good ballad and this is one of the best. The ironic thing about Metallica is that a lot if not most of their songs are about the depths to which human beings can sink but the band members themselves have handled their fame and fortune well compared to other rockers who have ODed or fucked up their lives in some other ways. They seem like they have pretty happy and together lives.
