This particular version is missing his most beautiful part though: In the S&M version there's an instrument (a flute maybe...?) playing a melody at the 3:17 mark of this version. It's so beautiful!

People can disagree until the end of time about Metallica’s musical direction on this album (which I came to appreciate more and more over the years), but Bob Rock’s production is simply masterful and I don’t know of another metal album that sounds quite like the Black Album.

The sound production of this album was masterfully done, between Hetfield's 4 or 5 layered "wall of guitars" tracks to Lars' "gunshot" snare, it had some real meat to it.

The black album is the clearest h/m - rock album ever release. You understand every note, Every word. Every instrument is clear and obvious ( yeah even the bass). It combines into a wall of sound. Can you imagine the early stuff with same level of production and clarity.

Bob Rock gets a lot of unnecessary hate from "fans," but to this day the Black Album is still the best sounding album I've ever heard. My Friend of Misery is one of my go-to songs to test speakers on.

@@nckhed Personally I think MOP has aged better than the black album. Despite the clean sound we have here, the full mixes with drums are overly harsh and pushed on the high end. MOP has a lush quality to it that I feel I can crank up to infinite volume without it hurting my ears, while this album can give me a headache at high volume

I have dealt with intense harrasment because of lies and rumors and this song helped so much. And yes music is just music but this song helped me feel brave when i felt like I couldn't take it anymore. Musicians have the power to reach so many people. Please son't stop producing songs like this. And thank you so much. For a person in despair it means a lot to know that a complete stranger knows and understands.
