Lars Ulrich is the Ringo Starr of metal. Change my mind. He's simple , solid, and does exactly what is needed for the song. Maybe not the most technical, but he gets the job done and give the feeling to the song that needs to be there.
@rsting4ever3284 жыл бұрын
@Joel Banning because Ringo's never made mistakes before, right? There are more much videos of Lars keeping time than messing up. Shit, there are classical musicians who mess up at times. Lars is my favorite drummer. He’s never been a show off but his drumming style is instantly recognizable and catchy. He is a genius and using dynamics to highlight certain parts of the song. He is not only a drummer but the biggest influence in Metallica, he arranges all of their songs. James writes riffs but has little influence on the actual arrangements.
@jasonschrock24488 жыл бұрын
I've always loved this solo , Lars was actually the man with speed that most drummers didn't have back when i was a kid and first started drumming. my idols back then were John bonham, cozy Powell, Ian paice. But Metallica got me into faster raw music. Lars double bass playing was unheard of. him and the band themselves inspired many new musicians. Reading all this hate towards him is funny. A solo doesn't have to be complex as long as you put a good show. most drummers anyways put most of their creativity into the music and not solos, though a few put extreme creativity to everything they play. Lars is a really good drummer. I've been drumming for 8 years BTW.

Remember the day when I found and purchased the original Metallica - Live Shit: Binge & Purge at 15/16 yrs old with my own money. Went out to eat that morning with my relatives for breakfast. While waiting for our food we ordered I told my aunt amd uncle I am going next door to Soundwaves music store. Maybe i would get lucky to find a new sound or album (tape cassette) to absorb and drown out my parents and high shool nonsense. It had been a few years since my father took me along to the Monsters of Rock show in Houstonn Tx . I had not seen Metallica live since. I had no idea what I would find in the store would bring me up to speed on what i had missed. That tour boxset had alot of visual, audio, and book crammed inside. This was at time when there was: No internet. No cellphones to watch clips. No KZbin. It was a simpler time to discover and enjoy new material from many artist from classic to hard/heavy rock to hip-hop and more to explore undreamt of...

He is good but not the greatest. Unfortunately there are probably thousands of KIDS that are better than him. Some drummers that are actually masters at what they do is Eric Moore or Buddy Rich. I know they aren’t metal/rock drummers but Lars plays like the simplest rock beats and not even that cleanly. So even though he is good, he isn’t the greatest.

What I don't get is, he's been playing drums for 40+ years (or 15-20 years at that time), and he hasn't even bothered to learn double stroke rolls, even though it only takes a couple of days to learn and is an incredibly useful rudimentary ever after. Granted, it takes much longer to really master the technique, but you can still do some pretty cool stuff with just that basic knowledge. If you don't know what a double stroke roll is, it's when you bounce your stick to achieve more speed and create a sustained frequency or 'tone' on the drums. right-right-left-left-right-right-left-left. If you listen at 1:44 for example, he tries to achive that effect with single strokes (right-left-right-left), but he's barely able to maintain it since you can't keep up the speed and precision that way. Therefore he pretty much abandons the idea and goes for something else right away.

In his prime he was great. During the St Anger period, not only Lars went in the gutter, the entire band did. Nowadays he’s better than during that time. Hardwired to self destruct is a good example of Lars getting that skill back. Another thing that should be taken into consideration is his age, Lars is getting old and playing the drums has worn his body out. He tore his shoulder bad and had to get a fill in to play live during Worldwired tour. I agree he’s out of practice but I also hold the belief that he is over hated and his contribution to music is not taken into thought.

Nah if you ignore the drum sound on St. Anger his playing is probably the best it's been since the Justice era. I do agree that he's getting his skill back recently tho

I get the impression that most of the internet nerds who say Lars is horribly bad at drumming have never hit a bin lid in their lives let alone a drum set. They just say it because they want to look cool and knowledgeable to all the other non musicians on the internet who pretend they can play the drums. He's not Neil Peart or John Petrucci, but he's a good metal drummer.
@nark0303ONC10 жыл бұрын
nowadays even a drummer who has been playing a few years with double pedal could do a better solo than this shitty stuff :) he doesn't even seem to know triplets or non linear stuff :)
@joshtate532810 жыл бұрын
***** My area of expertise is guitar, not drums. Therefore I won't criticise his abilities or lack thereof. I'm just referring to the internet dweebs who criticise him because they want to appear knowledgeable on a subject about which they know absolutely nothing. I bet 95% of people who criticise his drumming have never hit bin lids let alone a drum kit. Kirk Hammett's skills are more relevant to my critical abilities: he is an overrated guitarist. Trujillo is the best musician in the band at the moment, and Jason Newsted is the best musician they ever had, with Hetfield far behind in second place. Newsted was too good for Metallica.

***** HAHAHA, yeah even James said it, when asked if he thought Lars was the best drummer in the world his answer was "he's not even the best drummer in Metallica"

@LearningDrummerSam10 жыл бұрын
Josh Tate No, quite honestly, the people who criticise him are usually drummers themselves, and those who praise him are the ones who have never played the drums, which your comment highlights. He's not a bad drummer whatsoever, but what he is doing is incredibly simple and fairly standard for a drum solo these days.
