what was "on the same level as" supposed to mean in this case?? In 1983? ...Raven were bigger. ...commercially?: absolutely. Raven's debut album: Rock Until You Drop was a NWoBHM classic and was something MetallicA admired & listened to (That, particular, album was much less "commercial" than the later Raven and was louder, faster, harsher)! So: since you didn't explain what you meant and: NO! No-one is going to read your mind! ...so: based-on that, alone: it has to be accepted that: You're wrong. -You might argue: song-writing or arrangement capabilities. O.K. 👍👍 ...but: as far as musicianship? ...and success within the (then) underground metal community?? - especially in the early '80s!!!? ...they were at "the same level." Absolutely. That's not a question of taste or preference (and that is nearly always what people MEAN when they refer to an artist being "better" than another (...or "more" something 🤷🤷)-even when they SAY it ISN'T! ...obviously: No-one is going to compare, say 🤷 Stay Hard 🤷🤷 or The Pack Is Back to: Master Of Puppets, or something! That would, just, be, flat-out, ignorant! ...but there was a period when MORE people would have been familiar with the name (and the music of): "Raven" than with the name: "Metallica." ...even if only by a slight margin. Naturally, things changed drastically when 'tallica moved from Megaforce over to Elektra (and the larger label budget could be used to promote and familiarize people with Metallica's music!) and Kill 'em All and Ride The Lightning developed larger and larger followings ...erupting, finally, with the release of: Master... and a slot opening for Ozzy! ...No-one is arguing the development. ...but you don't specify a time or range ... [🤦🤦] ...so: your non-statements have-to-be called out.

@@firebirdlover4460 I agree with you 100 percent. That's exactly why master, ride justice and black all sound so refined and classical influence all over it . I'm not saying Kirk and James didn't write great riffs. I'm saying once the industry got them they directed them in very specific ways. Studio players showed them better arrangements, different movements and helped them craft what they ultimately became. Yes Metallica wrote great music. But Kirk and James didn't write what we were listening to too. They played it. Had some good ideas but ultimately were guided, shown and groomed.
