When my brother died in 1989 I was in such a dark place. This song seemed to written and described my brother exactly. The guilt and shame and the unforgivable feeling of depression. My brother committed suicide. Listening to this song really explained to me what he must of felt when he died. I have since then after I got married in 2009 (took me a long time to get over his death). I vowed that whatever my kids wanted to be, whatever they tried to do in their lives I would be there for them. My son (13) and daughter (11) will always be supported and loved by me their father. This song is a beautiful expression of things that might have been.

I have grieved with this song and cried many rivers as a teenager listening to this. "Never free - never me!" Unforgiven to them and unforgiven to me. Label me. I label you. That's real and honest life! Still at 46 - this is my go to grief song when I lose a loved one. The lyrics always ring true of their life and my own. So deep and so real of how many lives these lyrics affect so many and also helps us to grieve those who pass before us. My mom was very religious and hated Metallica and my music choices growing up. And ironically- it was the music and lyrics that saved me - way back when. Very horrific youth years and suicide was never more than a thought away - back then. And even after finding Jesus and the truth by reading the bible for myself; songs like this are very much needed to hug self and comfort self for the flesh sake. And I do! Thank you for The Unforgiven!!! Best hugs ever Metallica and saved many lives and also their souls to become better people too. Still my favorite song that should be played at all funerals. Just because those who give this song a chance then they absolutely get it and those who haven't yet --- will get it when death looks back at them from the ones they loved!
@theresat59985 жыл бұрын
Great song! In my opinion, this song to me is about when you realize you’ve been trying to please everyone else wether it be society or family/friends. Then one day you realize you lost sight of who you are and what you want. Does anyone truly know you? Don’t wait till it’s too late ..instead of “never me, never free” let it be, “I am me, I am free!”.

Speaks to me more along the lines of societal expectations. You got to learn the rules, never allowed to just be, always needing to fit in. The line" so I dub thee unforgiven" is what sells that idea for me. No matter what happens you still owe someone, almost like a debt is never repaid. Never me, never free. Food for thought at the very least.

The line at 2:17 - *"He tries to please them all, this bitter man he is!"* - really resonates with me. I do so much for so many people & do it quite well, and they don’t appreciate it much. Whenever it gets to me, I always think to myself "Without me, everyone who depends on me is in serious trouble." Still, I strongly identify as the one James dubs "The Unforgiven." This will forever be my favorite Metallica song.
@girohead4 жыл бұрын
Yes, this was my take away from this, but I didn't grasp all the lyrics as a teen when I needed it. But, times were different then, people weren't bitter about doing things, because good things came back. Now there are more users and takers so doing 'so much for others' is folly. One and done, I'll still do or go first, but someone who doesn't reciprocate gets called out out or off the favor list.

Metallica you rock . 3 guys from high school and I our senior year went to Sumerset Wisconsin to see Metallica on the 94 black Album. We got a ride from a district attorney cause our car broke down in front of his house. We were going to walk 12 miles too the concert but he was nice and gave us a ride. The concert Metallica came down in a helicopter for the song 1 awesome . The drums were so loud people said y could here for 5 miles. Girls were mud wrestling and getting wild. We partied from 10pm till the next day with some cool Canadians. Just a great show.

There comes a time in someone's life when a song resonates with them massively. Right now is certainly that time for me with this song. I'm about a month or so away from being sent to prison for finding myself involved in some stuff I had always vowed to stay away from which has also led to my closest friend also facing prison for the same thing while attempting to help me get out of it. Since the arrest last year I have always felt incredibly guilty and self-defeated and self destructive and I know I will be stuck with the shame and guilt for quite some time, but yeah I do see myself as Unforgiven no matter what everyone else says

This song talks to me. I'm 75 years old. This songs puts into words what I've felt all my life but could not put into words myself! The feeling of utter loneliness when for some reason you don't understand, your the odd man out. When your always the new kid. When your an adult your the F.N.G. When you make it home from an undeclared war and your the bad guy. When Democrats think your too conservative and Republicans say your too liberal. I'm glad my coach introduced me to this band. I thought it was stupid at first because it was 'old' and that it didn't match my friends music taste, (realized it didn't matter later on). I come across the band again, and I now know the only reason why I didn't like the band before. It was because I didn't look 'hard enough' to find the meaning in their songs. Thanks, coach.

An impossibly profound set of lyrics...truly powerful and painful. Love this song...always have since I was young and first heard it. There is an incredible power in man's creativity and lyrics like this are testament to that fact. Thanks for posting this.
