The Unforgiven songs are about James Hetfield and his struggles due to the environment he was raised in. A very strict Christian home that did not believe in medicine or anything because God would take care of it. Due to that he watched his mother die of cancer after his father had already left the family. He's not talking about growing old either. The guy in this first Unforgiven isn't old nor grows old in the song. It's about the feeling of being young (James was a pretty young guy when he wrote this, early thirties tops) but feeling like your life is over. That the world has battered you so bad that you are, inside, an old man. That's why he says the lyrics "that old man here is me". He means from the years of mental abuse, both in his childhood and what he's done to himself, have turned him into a bitter old man. James Hetfield is The Unforgiven.

I've been a huge fan since I was really little, but I recently went through a horrific loss. I held the person as they were taken off life support. Four days prior to this, I saw Metallica in concert. They played this song as a part of their Black Album anniversary tour. James said to the crowd "Forgive yourselves" and I cried then, but I didn't know how much more I needed this later that week. I think about James a lot, and the things he has gone through. His reminder to forgive myself and try to grow in this world is not only appreciated, but very needed. I wish I could thank him personally, and the band, for helping me through this.

@@DK-rh5sf feminism you say? "The Unforgiven" is James Hetfield's most personal track of all Metallica songs. The song explores James' tumultuous childhood. His dad left the family when he was thirteen for no apparent reason -- only a mare note was left behind explaining his departure. James got really mad at his father for leaving them behind, given that he was the breadwinner of the family and that his mom wasn't as effective at being a single parent. She made a living painting stuff, but besides that, she wasn't able to properly take care of James and her daughter. Nevertheless they managed to push on... but not for long. His mom passed away when James was sixteen after a losing battle with cancer.

_Metallica_ (The "Black Album") was Peak Metallica. I said it. _Metallica_ was the most musical, most creative album that they made. Everyone that says their earlier stuff is better are "metalheads" that care more about the idea and the image than the music, just like gangsters with rap --- it's not the music itself, it's the feeling of being part of an "outcast community". Everyone that says the later stuff is better --- err... maybe it's a matter of adjusting meds?

This song when I heard this at 16 was awe inspiring, now at the age of 46 the lyrics mean more to me now than they ever did with my journey and struggles to have my music heard and the fact I will never be as huge or recognised for flying the metal flag like many musicians who will also have been or will be in the same position. It tells and reminds us of the ever so real story of struggle and sacrifice for who or what you want to be, but may not be in the end. It's an ironic song for many, but it also helps you deal with that it's ok, even if you dont succeed with your goals, it teaches you, no matter what, try to be who you feel you need to be, even if there is a cost... LIVE LIFE and LOVE.

I had to grow into their music. It scared me when I was little, struggling with nightmares and fearing the Sandman. As I age, I wake to an appreciation like no other. When I can't sleep I often study Metallica. Interviews reveal the beautiful hearts of these gifted men. Still heavy and sometimes hard to watch and listen to with such intended gravity. When I do though I learn and grow note by note by painful note...as a singer and music lover, to these Masters I will always be grateful ♥️🎶🤘
