Nick, i love that you chose this song to show Lex! Definitely one of my favorite Metallica songs! It has been awhile since i have listened to this song! It sounded so much better than i ever remember it sounding! The guitar is so thick and layered and love that distortion! Top notch playing on display! Glad Lex enjoyed it so much! Fun video! Another great reaction guys. Now that Lex has heard the song, you guys should bring up and watch their performance of this song on the Grammy awards from that year when they lost to Jethro Tull. It was the first time a heavy metal band played on live TV. And they blew the roof off of the place! You guys will love it.

Yep, I'm a 69-year-old hippie, and I sure do remember that Grammy night! Lots of hype ahead of the show, both about Metallica being nominated and performing, and about the utter ridiculousness of Tull being nominated in the same category! It really almost seemed like a conspiracy to keep Metallica from winning the first Metal Grammy featured on the show. But yeah, I remember that performance (and the PRODUCTION of that performance!!) was really outstanding! I remember even my Mom (who died at 70 years old in 2000) was even visibly, and definitely surprisingly, impressed by their performance as well. The Grammys was not something she usually watched, but for some reason, she did watch with me that night! I've rewatched the vid on utube many times!

I remember watching and being upset that they lost - and for a split-second, in my blind, teenage state of perpetual protest and angst, even being pissed at Jethro Tull. The Tull album is actually wonderful - a masterpiece - though it was hardly “heavy metal.”

I remember waiting months for this album's release, seeing Lars tease it on MTV ("It's going to be called 'dot dot dot And Justice for All...'"), seeing the video premiere prior to the album's release, and buying the album the day of *its* release. Really brings me back. An incredibly powerful piece of music based what has to be one of the bleakest films ever produced (the ending is absolutely devastating). Love the scooped, mutlitracked guitars (overdubbed eight times, I think), LOVE the bass drum sound, don't care for the midsection solo. Have never been big on Hammett's lead shredding. The absence of bass was intentional, sadly. There is a great interview with the sound engineer for the album somewhere on KZbin and another, equally-great interview with Jason Newstead on the Scuzz TV channel (If I remember correctly? What a name.). Loved watching and listening to this reaction!

To get the full effect of this song, watch the video which plays right along with the video from the movie "Johnny Got His Gun" It was the first music video that Metallica made. The bass on this album was purposely turned down. They probably were still not over the loss of losing Cliff to a freak tour bus accident. Have Lex check out Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Until it Sleeps, Hero of the Day - Some lighter Metallica songs since Lex already knows Nothing Else Matters and the Unforgiven.

The video is atrocious because they play movie dialogue over the song. The dialogue doesn't even add anything as its all redundant to the lyrics anyway.
@fordhouse8b
@fordhouse8b 2 жыл бұрын

Its what a person I watch daily talking about this subject, last year, on those who were against the establishment ("don't trust anyone over 30", "watchout for the man!/watchout for Big Brother!") are now EMBRACING it . . . he called them; "Raging WITH the Machine". Yeah.. the ‘one’ thing that bothers me now more than it did before is the absence of any bass giving it a thin sound. The guitar playing is amazing though and I’m sad that they did all this amazing music and kind of ruined the overall sound with a real lack of low end. It’s also sad in the fact that they never returned to this level of progressive metal. All jokes aside, Jethro Tull should be fully explored as one if the most underrated ultra-progressive bands of all time with top tier musicianship and I’m not talking about Aqualung. There’s so much more there… just a suggestion Lol.

one of the reason's Jason left Metallica is because they cut him out of this whole album.

Well . . . they sure did influence MANY bands to start Progressing Thrash, which in-turn influenced "Prog Metal" to be born. I VERY much agree. kzbin.info/aero/PL2DU3TBNutEdtiYql5HxhzIxzuFIPcXS9 Here you can see/hear who influenced the future of Metal turning into something else.

Say what you want about Metallica. They're the best metal band ever. Yes Iron Maiden is also absolutely phenomenal but Metallica in their prime perfected metal to a level we will never see again.

Metallica was in my Top 5 Fave Metal bands at that time. The album was a "dichotomy" of sorts, it was a bit more "raw" sounding, yet they were _progressing_ their style of Thrash, being a bit more technical. Even Lars had a bigger kit, and more cymbal sizes to play around with. "...and Justice for All" became my favorite Metallica album, as each song played its part in various Metal elements that made it stick out. But _other_ bands, heavier subgenres and technical bands were starting to get my interest (many Thrash bands "Progressing" the genre after, and then the coming "Prog Metal" bands that were forged from the more adventurous Thrash, Speed Metal, and the Euro Power Metal/U.S. Power Metal bands). It was such a HUGE deal for "One", it was their "1st" Video, and it EXPLODED on MTV. And then a nomination by the "Grammy's" as it would have been the 1st Thrash band to win the stupidest category "Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance - it was Stupid because Jazz/Fusion, Rock, Classical, Soundtrack Scores, Progressive Rock and Metal were the only genres that created "ALBUMS" worth of material (same goes to this day), not filler or "Hit Singles". It may have _hurt_ when another fave band of mine; Jethro Tull won, and I LOVED the album "Crest of the Knave", but they were NOT a "Heavy Metal" band, even though in Tull's earlier days, you could say they were a "Hard Rock" band for its time, and what the genre _was_ in the late 60's/early 70's. But to see Metallica on-stage, waking-up the snooty, the _sophisticated,_ the Top 40/R&B muzak crowd, giving a musical/aggressive middle finger to the establishment recording industry . . . I can remember I was "shivering" with excitement to have them all blown away, and to make their statement; THIS is what "musicianship" is, composition, and what makes OUR music different than what was popular then, as now . . . real musicians, and a foundation built around Guitars & Drums, and its probably going to piss you all off (as well as here who dare to watch, or don't) . . . and that is how we like it! :P When the 2nd half becomes aggressive, I was on the otherside of the TV Headbanging with force. The time and place where Metallica was, the adrenaline, excitement . . . it was a great moment for Metalheads (imo) all over the world. A band that received NO airplay on radio (except college radio, where I was living at the time, along with other Thrash and Death Metal bands). The "One" Video contained scenes from the Anti-War Film "Johnny Got His Gun" (WWI), which the lyrics are inspired by (even though there is the sound of a Helicopter at the beginning, conjuring Korea or the Vietnam war). The lyrics on the entire album have even more meaning today (though "Dyers Eve", was a dark favorite of mine because of my own relationship with my Parents was very painful during this time, and years that followed unfortunately). Cliff Burton, the former Bassist who was killed in the terrible tour bus accident was probably smiling somewhere in Heaven, proud of being a part of their journey and getting them to that place of notoriety (died on my Birthday), who may have been working on early versions of tracks, but "Dyers Eve" (the Instrumental) contains Bass lines that were being developed by Cliff, and his added poem (which starts out from a line in the Film "Excalibur" by the character "Merlin") recited by Hetfield. This would be, with all honesty, the Last Metallica album I would absolutely love. I thought from there they would Progress, but "Rob Rock" (Producer) would strip down their technicality for "song-oriented" tracks (even though beautifully produced) and it became more accessible for a wider audience, which was to many of us, the _antithesis_ of what "Metal" (Thrash) was to the Horde of Metal devotee's. Though now, there are a handful of tracks from "The Black" album that I really enjoy. . . . . so I moved-on to other bands that were exciting me again, and creating new subgenres. But I was very blessed to see "Cliff" with Metallica for The Master of Puppets Tour (with Ozzy), and then headlining the same tour, and In Justice tour with "Queensrÿche" opening (then seeing QR headline doing the entire debut of the "Mindcrime" album). *For Lexi . . .* Since Metal is so visceral, aggressive, unapologetic, not pretty and maybe "controversial", ALL subgenres of Metal talk about War in various points of view; some songs are the "feelings" of War (triumph, exhilaration), history/historical themes, to the sadness and tragedy, to the violence, pain and terror and even strong opinions of those who fight it. With all its terrible visions, it matches the type of music. For instance, not even to _Play_ the music, but to see the amount of bands alone that touch on the topic (with Nick's examples) can be found on 1 of my oldest playlists (with soo many deleted tracks, I have had to "guess" the tracks for the past few years to update it), which I simply called *!!! WAR !!!* . . . kzbin.info/aero/PL2DU3TBNutEfBMjpCODRSm4wcxfw9iqTj And directly about Soldiers; *Hymn's for the Soldier* (for anyone who was, or have veterans in their family or friends, Thank YOU for your service and We appreciate you on Veterans Day). . . kzbin.info/aero/PL2DU3TBNutEfChdwBZrDC_7fAB8acydir (I have a "tiny" playlist version that I'll suggest for a Marathon soon) The amazing performance at the Grammy's for One: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKimanupqcSZfLc You guys may want to checkout the film "Johnny Got His Gun" for Veterans Day? This was really awesome, Lexi experiencing this with new senses and wisdom. Her doing the hammer-on's and pull-offs, I think this makes her a keeper Nick! :D A Cliff Burton 2-Fisted seal of approval guys! m 😠m . . . 🙂. - Really excellent Reaction \m/.

Sorry guys, I goofed again, the "Instrumental" is NOT Dyers Eve but *"To Live Is to Die".* I had kept portion of what I was writing, then re-edited parts and added more, then POOF, I pressed a key that made everything VANISH. So my edits and last portion of my comment had to be re-written :(. If I re-edit the above, I'd lose the Heart 😊.
