Ah man, I didn't realise she died. I have the same birthday as Phil, 20th August, and so for my 27th or 28th (some random birthday anyway) I celebrated in Bruxelles, off Grafton Street (Harry's Street I think) where Phil's statue is, with some friends. Anyway, while we were all boozing, Philomena came in and chatted to the bar staff. I assumed it was because it was Phil's birthday too and the place has a connection with him. I didn't go near her of course, it wouldn't have been right. But I felt a connection, albeit a very tenuous one through the arbitrariness of a shared birthday, to herself and the great man. Anyway, RIP Philomena.

There are so many layers to why this is such an amazing version of this song. 1. The song itself is an old old traditional Irish song dating way back to (probably) around the 1650s. 2. Metallica's version is of course based on Thin Lizzy's own version, themselves a legendary Irish rock band (hence James' "We love you, Phil" shoutout to the late Phil Lynott, lead singer, bassist, and founder of Thin Lizzy) 3. Kirk is playing a Les Paul known colloquially as "Greenie," originally owned by the late Peter Green (who founded Fleetwood Mac), and later owned by the late Gary Moore, a brilliant Irish guitarist who was briefly in Thin Lizzy. 4. When there are that many nods to Irish music history, and you're playing the song in front of freakin' Slane Castle, that crowd is gonna soak it all up and sing along as loud as they can. 🤘🏻🤘🏻

When I was in H.S. back in the 80s, my buds were into Metallica. I was like what us this. It grew on me like creeping vines of ivy. I've been a metal head ever since. I'm 54 now and still enjoy them and Motörhead. I'm also enjoying FFDP a lot. It just feels right.

In 1974 age 19 I walked across a wet car park. Thin Lizzy we’re playing at Northwhich Memorial Hall. It was my first ever concert. I remember it because I tried to show my mates how high I could karate kick; sadly first my first leg went up, closely followed by my other leg. Landing on my elbows produced two bleeding elbows my favourite shirt now torn. Great music made up for my car park disaster. Now I listen to Metallica

Despite being different than their usual music, this is one of my favorite songs by them. Such a good sing along song Edit: I guess I need to say this is a cover song for some people to be happy. I already know that. They recorded a cover, put it on an album with their own style/twist, and perform it live so saying “by them” when they’re playing it live is no big deal

That's because it is a Thin Lizzy song and a traditional Irish song. Believe it or not the lead singer of Thin Lizzy Phil Lynott was the chief writer for the band who wrote some of the best songs I ever heard and being a major fan and collector of knowledge of the band, I was shocked that Phil Lynott and being a very proud Irishman wasn't a big fan of the song, which really opened the world to Thin Lizzy had to be convinced to release it as a single which he didn't even want to put the song on the album it was on he just wanted to release it as a single because the record company was advising them to do it. It got them on the show Top of the pops and was their first hit for the world's most underrated band in my opinion. Love Metallica's version more than TLs. Lizzys was more traditional and folksy not as pounding and upbeat as Metallica's. I think it's Metallicas best song and definitely a crowd pleaser to me. I listen to their version atleast once a month. And being a major Lizzy fan more than Metallica U rarely listen to theirs lol. Great cover in my opinion and actually to me have kinda made it their own because of their upbeat anthemic version
