So... The differences are that cold rolled has tighter dimensional tolerance, and has a smoother finish. But what about strength, toughness, hardness, etc? Those seem to be very salient properties, about which I'm not finding much information... Oh, and of course, cost. You mentioned cheaper, but by how much 1%? 10%? 50%? Obviously it varies; I'm just looking for ball park figures.
@ASHUTOSHDUBEYBME7 жыл бұрын
in hot working it results in improvements of properties like impact strength and elongation. due to higher deformation temperature, the stress required for deformation is less. Hot working refines metal grain resulting in improved mechanical properties. if cracks and boles are present in the metal, they are finished through hit working. if hot working is properly performed it does not effect ultimate tensile strength, hardness,yield strength and fatigue strength of the metal but in cold working it improves UTS ,hardness and yield strength..................i think this information may helps u .....................i m ashutosh from india.
@zxwmabcdef54397 жыл бұрын
Cold rolled should have higher tensile strength since it has a certain amount of work hardening when it comes to you. Hot rolled is not "the same only cheaper". In hot rolled steel the composition is not controlled as much as it is in cold rolled. Name brand certified cold rolled won't have as much stress as generic cold rolled. Curtis steel brand cold rolled is oil can. Reliance brand tends to be better.

Ashutosh Dubey - Sir it seems you have good idea about cold formed steel. I am currently researching on possibility of cold formed steel used as structural steel. I have some specific doubts about it. Can you help me ???
@zxwmabcdef54397 жыл бұрын
My experience has been that cold rolled steels or any alloy worked at room temperature has better mechanical properties and they are consistent if it is from a name brand vendor like RA. I have seen alot of generic material that had yield point runout and pockets where gigantic amounts of stress had built up. I have actually seen material that had visible bands where the yield point varied down the length and aluminum that had places with so much stress it actually had lines inside it.
@zxwmabcdef54397 жыл бұрын
Curtis Steel is one of the worst their material is oil can when you get it.

So how does this relate to crystallization? I looked this question up after watching a blacksmithing video which referred to hot rolled steel being worked at temperatures above its recrystallization threshold, and was curious as to how lower temperatures would affect this process in particular...

hot rolling process is used to reduce the diameter of the metal and cold rolling process is used to surface finishing,diameter accuracy of product of hot rolling process... am i right ?? plz tell me
@cmkinusa7 жыл бұрын
hot rolling process is to form steel to shape. Without continuing the process, this rolled shape will reduce in size as it cools down, often losing sharp edges, squareness, finish, and straightness. When I say losing squareness and straightness, I mean in the thousandths range, not in any great amount. More a concern for machining to tight tolerances than for typical non-critical use.
