I take both everyday. Metamucil increases stool bulk, Miralax increases motility. 2 Tbs Metamucil, 3/4 cap Miralax every day. I’m over 60 and had had constipation at some level for 40 years.

I am 85 and have had constipation issues for the last 25 years. Metamucil has been prescribed by several doctors over the years. Every time I have tried it constipation followed quickly. All that did was cause hard stools and my hemis to bleed. MiraLax has been my go to for the last ten years. Would not dare to try both at the same time.

Depends on the length of time since my last movement. Normal is a level teaspoon. Double that if no movement for 4 days. I have started sampling with a combination of Miralax and Benefiber together. Never more than a teaspoon of both at the same time. I take that at 5/6 AM with coffee. Seems to be working fairly well. Still have those times where Dulcolax/stool softeners, prunes and warm prune juice are needed. Plenty of water during the day is a must. Good luck with your health.@@judicoerver613

Make sure you are drinking lots of water when taking Metamucil. I’d say down an extra 19oz bottle of water for every tsp of Metamucil just to be safe

What about Magnesium Citrate vitamin pill taken orally at night? Magnesium helps the intestinal contractility as well as increase water to the GI tract. It can also help with sleep at night, decrease migraines in some ppl. Don’t underestimate the power of magnesium for constipation. Many ppl have low magnesium and our labs don’t measure body store unfortunately

So, i've been battling a fissure for 2 months and this is what is working for me: Miralax, one cap in the morning, one cap at dinner. One stool softener with each dose. Works like a charm. Your poo will be the consistency of toothpaste. I've done more healing in the last week of doing this than the rest of the time i've dealt with this. I started out doing the high fiber (Metamucil) like the GI doctor said and it only made things worse. It wasn't "hard" stools that it caused but "sticky" stools. Meaning they still required hard pushing to get out. I was even taking stool softeners on top of the fiber and it wasn't helping my situation. I was also eating salads and high fiber foods. It all added up to an average of 25-30 grams per day. I even took fiber WITH the Miralax and it didn't help. Now I'm eating absolutely anything I want and the Miralax turns it into pudding! It should be called MiracleLax because that's what it is.

Hi Dr. Chung! I enjoy watching your videos. They are so helpful and informative. I have several gastrointestinal issues and I'm currently going to a gastroenterologist. I've been told that I have Celiac Disease, GERD, Gastritis, IBS-M, and Peptic Ulcers. Recently I've been getting a lot of constipation, and my GI doctor told me to take 2 Tablespoons of Metamucil daily as a split dose (one tbsp in the morning and one in the afternoon) and 1 or 2 Docusate Sodium at night. I would like to know if this is safe. Can this cause diarrhea?

I love this combo, works well for me! But I only add Metamucil to my day if I am either eating out or if I don't think I'm going to eat as many veggies alongside my meal. I use half a teaspoon of Metamucil otherwise it is way too bulking.

Doc, I have a nightmare fissure from Chron’s disease. They put me on Remicade and it healed great…only the Remicade made me constipate and it tore again after a hard movement…so now I’ve been prescribed Linzess. I suffer with these issues too. I use both of these together without any problems...except gas sometimes. So I've been using Heather's Tummy Tamers Peppermint Oil capsules, and they really work! I have no affiliation with this product but it's seldom that i find something that works so well. They're kind of hard to find in stores but you can order them from the company online.

It is a hit or miss with Metaumcil. I've got a big bottle of Miralax sitting on my dresser for months that I haven't opened. I think I'll try that for a while before it expires. I haven't used Miralax long term but I've used MM for the last 3 years sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

My CRS told me to try ONE capsule of Metamucil (like 1/4 teaspoon, and that seems to work. If I take a full dose of Metamucil, as hell. Miralax and Colace are my go to.

If you want a full colon cleanse the best thing to use is a colon cleanse that only uses Magnesium Oxide. You need to drink heaps of water with it and it will use that water to purge and flush you out.

Thank you for answering this question. My PCP has recommended both on a tier system. If Metamucil doesn't work, move to MiraLax. However, while an urgent care provider prescribed MiraLax 2 days ago to cleanse "a lot of poop" from my colon. Metamucil works faster and better for me as a stool softener. I drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. MiraLax, on the other hand, takes too long to kick in, and makes me feel bloated and stuck. In other words, Metamucil produces 1 or more soft movements daily, almost immediately; whereas MiraLax takes days to build up to an explosion. The latter is scarier and harder to plan around. Then, my urgent care provider prescribed MiraLax 2 days ago to cleanse "a lot of poop" from my colon. I am still waiting at home for that to happen, but I must return to work tomorrow. So, I wondered if I could continue the Metamucil as my daily softeners and use MiraLax as cleanser as needed. (I paused the Metamucil while I'm taking MiraLax.) Thanks again!

After months of daily pain here's what worked for me to take life back to normal: Warm sitz bath 10 mins a few times per day, ice if needed, Laxative, increase fruit/veggies. Reduce protein if too high, use cream for irritation.

I have actually mixed up the Metamucil with Miralax in the same glass…….drank it down and it’s been okay, but fiber overdose sometimes. 😮So it just resulted in BLOATING…ugh! Gas monster for sure. I think it is different for every person, because it also depends on what you ate the day before! (My plan is for one dose of miralax every morning with my coffee and I get results within an hour then I move on with my day…..but it took years to get to this point.) Good luck my bottom end friends, just keep experimenting, don’t give up! 😊

Healing from hemorhoidectomy on day 25 today and my doc had to do silver nitrate on me because I’m not healing well. We believe it’s because the beginning of my daily BM is harder. Even though I’m taking Metamucil and stool softeners. So tonight I did a small amount of miralax and will start to add a bit more each night hoping it can soften the part of my stool that’s causing harm. I went in with complaints that it’s still painful to go and BM feeling like I’ve got to strain a bit more than first or second week. I need help. I’m miserable. BM hurt during and after, then I’m useless for half of my day.

For real? If I stopped miralax today I’d be ok? I’ve been on miralax almost 2 years. I’m post op for rectopexy. I just watched a video where a provider was recommending 30-50 mg fiber! No! Also I took Metamucil in morning at night and it gave me mad diarrhea. I try to get fiber in ratio to calories. More than 20-25 messes me up.Drs also recommended 30-35 glad I found you. I get so bloated post op. Wait read the Metamucil bottle to use 2 hrs before or 2 hrs after medication! It can interfere with absorption.

Thanks to you dear Dr. Chung, taking Miralax is the best thing that has ever happened to my butt as I had never gone through 2 months without an episode of bloody bowel movement no matter how much I have changed my diet. Ever since been taking Miralax(we call it Restoralax in Canada) more than a year ago, it has been smooth sailing ever since. Metamucil did the job but came with a LOT of collateral damage: taking too little won't work, too much then I will be passing logs as big as radiator hose. I love it over Metamucil is that it can be taken discreetly, just mix it with the food and it won't alter the taste, I can do it in the public or among friends and nobody knows what I've added.

I have heard quite alot of evidence that fiber is not actually all that great in some people and i can attest to this. I can get away with soluble fibre like fruits and veggies, but metamucil or psylium husks makes things 10x worse no matter how much water i drink or whatever. I think doctors need to look into this more because i messed myself up badly by listening to dr who just keep saying more more more more fibre
