Bad magic trick. He easily could have given the paper to the student if the book choice was different. Or have the Hume book discarded if it wasn't discarded originally.

Even still if he has control of who he gets the paper to you’re still subject to the fact that you do not have free will because your will was decided by someone else by whom he gave the paper too?
