This is a pretty solid little workbench. While once you figure out how it comes together, it is physically Easy to assemble kzbin.infoUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh by yourself. But the diagrams explaining the steps are really pretty bad. I could not get the handle pins in all the way despite multiple attempts, so I just used a screw I had on hand for the 2nd handle. I could not get the first pin in further or pull it back out. You are supposed to hammer it in, but I had no leverage and the handle is plastic and I did not want to risk breaking it. I will get a lot of use out of the bench because of the convenient size and height. It does fold up nicely for storage. They even explain how to fold it so you don't get pinched...that is important!

I have had two "Keter" tables for over a year and love them. They are functional, well designed and always work for me no matter the project that I am working on. The setup is easy and not as cumbersome as you make it out to be. Several steps but when it is ready to go it is solid and works great. Thanks for the video by the way, good job.

I've had one of the simpler Workmates for close to thirty years. I've used it for many projects over the years. Both heavy-duty jobs and small craft projects. It doubles a side table in my kitchen. I've looked into the Keter work table for my son who is a professional woodworker for the movie industry, but during the covit pandemic, like all of us is stuck at home. He does small projects for his daughter and I thought he might be able to use this for his small projects. He's got every tool a guy would ever want but doesn't have a workbench. I really liked your review on the Keter work table. Thanks

Nice comparo, brilliant workshop. I have a 70s' Workmate (aluminum frame/ parts like yours) that I pulled out of a friend's barn and re-did. The thing is fantastic ( a genius device). I had a VW transaxle to re-seal- the workmate with the opening allowed me to put the input shaft down thru the top- a perfect work platform. I just made a center wood piece to add area to it. The original flake boards were toast so I used maple. Here is a tip for your saw horses- when they are nice and dry, coat every part with used motor oil (new oil will do)- especially the feet. It will soak in, the oil is a remarkable preserving "Product". Mike

@@metaspencer That is one use for the oil, I use it on the wood fence (especially the horizontal runs) and any wood to be preserved (like my trailer deck) and especially in closed panels in my car. I am in WNY where the roads get a lot of salt, besides the lake humidity which destroys the vehicles here. The oil creeps & blocks rust. Mike

Great video buddy I had a workmate for years its an extra arm or leg when working on a project and yes I used it on my last bus conversion so full circle I guess loved the comparison parts and the classic seahorses I remembered when I got a pair from my grandfather after he had passed so I'd say they lasted well over 50 years so they are my longest lasting tool in my shop. Thanks for bringing back some good memories.

This was good! I'm partial to old Workmates... With the dog holes you can get clamps that clamp from above like the Kreg, and at any hole. I think you should do a diy video of your wood sawhorses as that's the first thing a lot t of beginners build, or try to build... If one has space they still have their place...

The Worx Pegasus is superior to every table you showed. Got mine on eBay new in a sealed box for 79 dollars with free shipping. Sturdy, light weight, opens in a flash, and has amazing weight capacity for a plastic table. The included clamps are pretty good. I use this several times a month. Very convenient for a quick set up of my chop saw or most any small to medium sized project.

I'm still using my 1977 purchased Workmate! I did make a large tabletop insert but the original jaws are also still serviceable (albeit with some errant cuts & chips over the years). I also repainted the step and lightly sanded and refinished the jaws, but that's it. I've used it for everything from fine hand woodworking to outdoor chainsawing of woodburner stock. I think that speaks to the quality of components and assembly, at least way back when.

Lots of good info in this video. I have an old Workmate that used to belong to my older brother. I think it dates from the late 1970s. At some point it became mine, and over the years I have found it useful. There were times when I lived in an apartment and didn't have a real workbench, so the Workmate came in handy. These days I have a better workshop, but I still like the Workmate to put my miter saw on. Either this Workmate is getting heavier, or I am getting weaker. But that weight is part of its virtue. Anyway, thanks for a good comparison. And as you pointed out, there is a lot to be said in favor of a couple of beat-up old saw horses.

Once i finish my bus conversion I'll no longer need my storage facility that I'm using to build my bus out. Once the storage facility is gone, I'll both live and run my cabinet business (design, sales and installation) out of my tiny house on wheels. It's been weighing on me as to how I'm going to incorporate a work bench into a tiny space. I'm also confident that I'll be using it quite a bit while I'm building the bus. With the aid of your video I can see that the keter bench packs up very small (huge perk), is very solid, easy and fast to set up and inexpensive. Thanks for this review. I have two Workmates. One was a gift from my father that is 44 years old, the other I inherited from Dad and is over 20 years old. They are slightly different heights, so I don’t use them in tandem much. Haven’t really used either one much any more. Like you, there is sentiment attached to them.

They are different heights because the older 79-001 has one-piece legs and the 225 has the dual-height legs like your 425. The 225 sits just a bit lower than the 79-001. I guess I could fashion something to go under the legs of the 225, but necessity hasn’t driven me that way - yet!

Nice video. I've got a pair of plastic folding sawhorses that work well for portable uses. But my go to sawhorses are homemade and about 18" tall which gives me just enough reach 8' ceilings without being too tall. Then there are my 36" high saw horses which like yours are outside. I've replaced the cross pieces multiple times, and they just don't die.

Ive got one of the Keter tables, but for some reason they seem to be rebranded as Mac Allister for the UK market, maybe to give the impression they’re made in Scotland or something. Speaking of branding, you’re right Black and Decker tools aren’t great anymore, they still have a good reputation for the casual DIYer though. But its sometimes easy to forget Dewalt is a B&D brand, and thats where all their high end tools ended up. For that reason Im not sure I see the B&D workmate going out of production anytime soon

Nice, smooth video. I wonder how the plastic parts on the other workbenches will handle UV and the elements as compared to my 30+ years old B&D Workmate. The only parts that have worn out on it are a couple of the screw on rubber feet. I can probably mold some RTV around the original screws to create new feet.

I just bought my second black and decker workmate last week. I bought a small light weight version a year ago it doesn’t have the little footrest. It’s the workmate 350. Then last week I bought the black and decker 425, which is a big table. It’s got a three piece bench top and is rated for 500 lbs. it’s pretty nice actually. I got my first workmate when I was 10 years old, back in 1980. They are a really decent little workbench. I don’t know if I’d like the other types made of plastic. I like the wood tops because I can bolt a vise to them if needed. I have a handyman business and sometimes I need a vise and a way to bolt it down at the job site. Great vid btw. 👍

I’m using DIY folding wooden sawhorses currently but they are a little heavy. They are better than any of the store bought ones since they are wood and have a bottom shelf and still fold. Sometimes I just want a flat table though. I like the dewalt table and the work table so one might be in my future.

We have an older work mate. It's a tank. Forty years? We use the split table vise feature often. Shelf below is very useful, too. (No step on ours.) I read reviews on newer ones that said they are not made as sturdy now, so we'll keep ours. Can't see it ever breaking, though we do tend to lose rubber feet caps. They turn up...

Sure thing: it's just a 2x4 along the wall and 4x4 legs with a 2x4 frame and plywood top. Shelf underneath for tools and stuff. Overbuilt so no flex at all ... really great

I've had my B&D Workmate for over a quarter of a century and although beaten up it still doing what it was designed to do. The spring clips on the folding legs did fail so I screwed them solid in the open position. I have been looking for a companion for the B&D for some time but have never found anything to match it so far

Have you tried the Husky (Home Depot) $79? It is a lot like the Keter, simple clamping, side hooks for 2x4 mounting, miter saw table, and most important, router table. Router plate makes for a cool light weight and versatile table for a small space.

Excellent comparison. I appreciate that you’ve owned these for some time and have been able put them through their paces with real-world use, rather than bringing in several items and trying them to n a few contrived tests. I’m looking for something I can pack into my trunk and take to the carving club so I can secure my carving projects, so lateral clamping pressure is a must. The replaceable wooded tops and screw-type clamping are leading me towards a workmate model. Any thoughts about this use? Have you used any of these for carving?

Dang, if only this video were made when I first bought my house. I would have saved $160 on my kitchen table and gotten a useful mobile workbench out of it to boot. I'm only half in jest as I'd have no problem using this as a kitchen table. I sleep under my workbench on the floor as I didn't care to waste the room for a bed that would take up the majority of the space in the room.

I whish you had a Dewalt express folding bench. I am between that and the Keter. Both supposedly can handle 1k pounds and directed at handling a miter saw. How did the Keter hold up now that you have had it for a while?

Sorry, don't know about the Dewalt but I know they make good tools (I used their miter saw stand). That Keter is still doing: it's kind of a tank. I've abused it but no problems so far. Good luck figuring it out!

Personally, I think Kregg is way over-priced (especially here in South Africa!) I've been looking for a portable worktable/workbench sorta' thing lately (actually, several years in various forms). I'm liking the new Kreg KWS500 Track Horse Tool (currently $119 on Amazon), that I feel is a better value than their "project center". Obviously one needs to provide a work surface to make it truly useful. It comes with one of those clamps, is height adjustable, and doesn't seem as flimsy. My thought regarding a work surface, as with the others w/plastic tops (replace, or retrofit!), is something along the lines of the Festool MFT top. I'm not too keen on the weight (or wear) factor of MDF, but the functionality of the grid of dog holes is pretty hard to beat. Perhaps something along the lines of a torsion box? A hollow-core door, skinned on both sides with... ? Not sure. I'm curious if one could make something with the weight of a hollow-core door, with the strength and durability of say a phenolic laminate material? McMaster-Carr has some interesting materials that might be useful.

I think you could make a pretty lightweight top, but the problem might then become deterioration if you cut into it over time. The nice thing about a heavier top, I've found, is that it can take a beating and small saw cuts without degrading too much. Good luck moving forward with this! I hope to test out that Kreg Track Horse, too

@@metaspencer Well, regarding the sacrificial top (other than MDF or "masonite"), I've seen (but not tried) people use rigid insulation panels or yoga mat material... not that that's environmentally correct (and I imagine, messy), but that's debatable, and perhaps solvable. Not that different from an old-school sawhorse with the sacrificial 2x4 at the top(?). I imagine something like the X-ACTO cutting mats that crafters use - only for saw blades! Also, a gentleman named Timothy Wilmot made a mobile workstation based around the Festool MFT and their systainers, that was pretty genius, I thought, that might interest you. One could modify that to suit their needs, I'd think. I've been wanting to make something similar for quite some time now, though my work/life/abode/vehicle situations seem to constantly be in flux, it still appeals to me for some reason. I use a small hand planer with the keter, but for BIG STOCK and a big planer, it'll move on you. Small stuff works though

Mine is still chugging along and I like its stability. It's plastic so mine has some melt holes and whatnot, but I still like it ... I'll have to look for those deals! I'd buy another myself

Nice video. Have you got any help on keeping the Kreg table "wings" level? Mine is easily 1/2" low on either side. Hardly useable as it is

I guess I've gotta say that I'm not too surprised, as the Kreg table seems to be to be pretty cheap and plasticky. Maybe your problem is with the catches on the arms that support the wings? I'm thinking that yours might need some adjustment

The Keter bench is stronger because it's built like a box girder bridge. If the bench is anything like most of Keter's tool boxes, then it's probably very well made.

Huh... learning shit about the workmate I pilfered from dad forever ago... I bought a knockoff of his years ago and still use both but the MDF top gave up on the knock off.

@@metaspencer you're not wrong... I like the collapsible, plastic sawhorses and a hearty piece of 3/4 plywood. If I am moving tools and working elsewhere that's my go to. But I think that Keeter you got is now on the list to check out. I think a guy could adapt some things to work like the kregg clamps in the Keeter table. Kregg track in some plywood screwed to the top could go a long way too.
