As the KZbinr Ramsey Dewey mentioned several times in his experiences of being held at gunpoint. The assailant is generally never at point blank range but at a reasonable distance as a gun is a ranged weapon. You won't be able to do move in to do shit except get riddled with bullets. The ones that " work" requires high to very high reflex speeds, the kind an average person won't have, the kind the older version of me no longer has. The reality is that in most situations where a gun is drawn the assailant won't draw that close, and or won't hold the gun as expected, so even a "functional" disarm is near useless and not worth keeping in your arsenal.

I did Krav Maga for about 3 years myself. One thing all my trainers always stressed was that if someone held you at gun or knifepoint asking for your money... Just give it to them. The techniques we were taught were worst case scenarios, and there was a heavy emphasis on preventing such situations from occurring (through situational awareness for example) and de-escalation or just straight up gtfo. For gun defense, we were taught to grab the barrel, block the wrist with the other hand, and twist the gun upwards, out of the hand. An important disclaimer was that the gun was likely to go off and that you'd be lucky if it didn't hit you, and even still would be lucky if it only grazed your skull. I feel like context like that is incredibly important to give with techniques such as this

I'm living in Mexico. There are hundreds if not thousands examples that trying to be a hero gets you killed. It is one thing to say "I would do this or that to the dude that tries to rob me, but the reality is - if you have gun to the stomach (and it usually is stomach not some theatrical pose to the head, because they dont want people to notice that they are mugging somebody) all you can do is give them what they want and hope for the best. Its a real life, not some action movie. Youre not Rambo, they are heartless, determined thugs who dont care about you at all AND WILL PULL THE TRIGGER if they dont like whats going on. The only instance I would try to run for my life would be attempt at kidnapping me because if you get kidnapped it will only worsen with time, you can get tortured, mutilated etc. You might as well try your luck early on. But also - try to RUN not make some comic book hero moves... Also - remember that muggers very rarely work alone. This is some another fantasy from the beginning to the end. One of the most common situation is team of two muggers, both armed in some sort of weapon, usually one is driving the bike to allow fast escape from the scene. Be REAL about that situations, your life is on the line. Having gun to your gut is not the time for ego trip and hero moves.

When I was in the military I received some brief training about how to disarm someone. One thing these videos seem to be lacking is what you should be doing BEFORE you attempt to disarm someone. You want to prep for your move as much as you can so that you can make it as fast as you can, and you don't want to give away your intentions so you can take your assailant by surprise. That was one of the biggest take-aways I got from my training, what you do before you attempt to disarm someone is very important, because surprise and speed are the keys to success. But you also need to be able to recognize in what situations disarming an assailant is the right path to take.

There are two times I've been taught techniques for dealing with a gun at point blank range. Both times my instructors first emphasized very hard that the first defense is to give the person what they want and you should only defend yourself if you're sure you're going to be shot anyway. Both times the techniques also included a set up to create the element of surprise and shorten the amount of movement required. Both times the instructor emphasized that both the technique and the follow up had to be extremely fast an violent. The follow up on both involved attacking the wielder with the intent to cause potentially lethal harm on the assumption that you might be able to briefly control the gun but not necessarily disarm the wielder. The only thing that these videos share with those lessons is the assumption that the gun is going to go off. On a side note neither of those techniques would work if you were facing away from the gun wielder for pretty obvious reasons.

The money wasn't worth his life, and he wasn't going to risk MAYBE killing or disarming the robber if it meant a 1/10 chance of his getting shot at the same time. Compliance can easily get you killed. Example: If someone gets in your car and holds a gun to your head and tells you to start driving to a location. What they are doing is making you drive to a secluded area where they can kill you and take everything you have on you. Another example: People break into your house, they hold a gun to your head and tell you to tell them to tell you where you keep everything valuable. One of the easiest ways to proof test all this BS is to find a friend, get an airsoft pistol, some rubber knives, wear masks, and try it. You'll notice that the bullshido instructors will say you can't bc you'll break your finger. I promise you it rarely ever gets that far. I found that getting behind the pistol and controlling it with two hands worked better, as did getting the other person talking, but even after we threw out the BS techniques, the results were still getting shot before making contact with the gun 1/3 of the time, getting shot failing to control the gun 1/3 of the time, successfully gaining momentary control of the muzzle 1/3 of the time, which on the positive side, usually meant IRL they fired a shot while your hand was on the slide, so it jammed (this isn't dangerous for your hand) and that usually meant whoever realized this and got the rubber knife out first won; That assumes the gunman has no friends too, btw. Still 1/3 odds at best is a ridiculous game to play for a wallet.
@vanivanov95713 жыл бұрын
Umm... you can easily break fingers doing that, yes. Many gun disarms intentionally break the trigger finger. So if you do it, take the bloody trigger guard off your airsoft gun, before it becomes bloody. As it is, it sounds like your practice was fruitful, where even against a prepared mugger you got a 2/3rds success rate? That's a great job! But yeah, your opportunity to resist is quite slim, if foolish enough to let a gun be put to you, so the risks of something unacceptable happening have to be quite high.

The second I was a bouncer in a bar, and we had to remove a guy that came in the bar looking for his cheating spouse, he found her. He started a fight with the guy she was dancing with. We pulled them apart and took him outside. We just wanted the guy to leave, the police had already been called. He turned like he was going and came back around with a pistol in his hands that he put right to my forehead. That situation felt way more scary than the robbery because I'm sure this guy felt like he had nothing left to lose. And I will swear to my dying day that I saw in his eyes when he made the decision to pull the trigger. So I went for the gun, I had my hands up at shoulder height palms outward, I grabbed the gun and his hand pushing them up and over my head. The gun went off about six inches above my head. At about this time the other 3 bouncers landed on him and I. My focus was just on holding onto that gun so I could keep him from shooting me. I ended up with 2 broke ribs and NGL needing to change my pants, as at some point my bladder had let go. Scariest moments of my life. While I served in Special Forces (US Army), we spent a great deal of time on weapon retention, particularly because - at the time - we were engaged in two theaters of war where a lot of the operations involved raids into built-up areas of one sort or another. The biggest factor in a close quarters situation where one will encounter pistol use is fear. Fear is the one aspect that makes even the best technique a crappy technique. The normal human fight-or-flight responses of tunnel vision, auditory exclusion, and loss of fine motor skills have to be taken into account when formulating any viable response to a life or death struggle for a weapon. I find that a lot of "experts" in the field fail to even mention this or take it into account. During CQB training, most of our injuries occurred in two instances: fast roping onto the target (not too common, but injuries did happen), and hand-to-hand combat against the personnel playing the part of the enemy on target (very common). Struggling for a pistol is ugly and messy.

True for regular civilians, they probably shouldn't be trying this without a proper physical and mental training. But for every kind of security forces, it is an obligation to do something to defend against a gun. When I was in private security long time ago, they taught us we have to come closer to the attacker with our hands up until the barrel of his gun is touching our body, and then we have to rotate our body and block his hand with the gun with our hand in order for him to miss us when he fires, or at least to miss vital parts of our body. As a security officer, you don't have the possibility to say "I just wanted to save my life". And they taught us that in order to defend ourselves we must always come closer to the attacker.

Sadly, handing over money and valuables isn't as sure to keep you safe from robbers anymore. In my country, we've seen a spike of so called "humiliation muggings", whereby the muggers begin with demanding your wallet and smartphone and all your valuables, but after you hand it over, they proceed to enact acts of violence and sadism on you just to satiate their psychotic idea of fun. It's not as much about getting money for these people as it is getting thrills from hurting and dominating innocent people.

I took an introductory class to pistol shooting recently and one of the first things you get taught is a firm grip on the firearm as you are effectively trying to contain a small explosion and due to the short barrel it is difficult to shoot a pistol accurately if not held tight. I don't see how you could so easily 'yank' a fire-arm away from someone gripping their gun with the intention to control recoil. If this is obvious to a complete layman after the first lesson it is safe to assume most people using a gun would have figured it out.

As a person who has received a little bit of training on how to disarm someone holding a gun to you at point blank range, and a person who was mugged at gun point after this training, I have a lot to say about this. It may be kind of long. I will first go into what kind of training I received and then what I ended up doing when held at gun point. Training: When I was about 13 years old I took a police self-defense course which was taught by, well -a police officer. It was a two day course with each lesson lasting 8 hours. One of the lessons was how to disarm someone holding a gun to you at point-blank range. The thing I was taught that day was to make a quick grab of the gun holder's wrist -which would be faster than they could react and force their hand open causing the attacker to drop their gun or kind of send it flying out of their hand to say -a few meters away. We (as students) tried this on each other with prop guns time and time again and it seemed to just about always work. We could get the gun out of their hands before the gunman could react -even if they knew it was coming. We eventually figured out a little trick that prevented this from working. If the person grabbed the gun squeezing pinky first on the grip, the wrist grab was ineffective. Now most people holding up someone might not have the presence of mind to do this, but then again we were still just a group of 13 year-olds trying this on each other under a policeman's instruction. The mugging setting: I was 22 years old and walking with three of my friends near Metro-Center mall, Phoenix Arizona, USA. It was dark and I was on the phone with my girlfriend (who is now my wife). We came upon a dead end side road that divided two apartment complexes -one of which I was living in at the time. One of my friends who was with me just got picked up by his wife and so three of us were left. There was a small silver or white truck nearby with, what I remember, three men inside. My young naive self didn't pay them any mind and kept talking on the phone to my girlfriend. I was lagging a little behind my friends who were going across a small grass park that led to a wall with an opening to get into my apartment complex. The mugging happens: I am beginning to follow my friends into the park when I look to my side and see the, what I remember, were three men walking up to me. I turn to look at them wondering if they needed something and immediately that's when the lead guy draws a silver colored gun. Things went in slow motion. One of the other guys had a bat... I don't remember if I noticed this at the time. I immediately dropped to the ground, laid on my stomach and put my hands behind my head. Oddly, I was focused on trying to do everything I could to not make them nervous. I dropped my phone with my girlfriend still on it, hearing everything. They cursed at me loudly to get on the ground and that they were crazy and would kill me. I heard them chasing after my friends who apparently, tried to run away from them and were near the entrance in the wall that led to my apartment complex. I over heard the attackers yelling at my friends to stay still or they'd shoot what I thought was me at that moment. There was a little bit of crying and commotion going on over there. They eventually grabbed my friends' wallets and phones, and grabbed my wallet before running off -they also decided to stomp on my head and hit me in the back with the bat on their way back to the truck. I remember being somewhat amazed that I didn't feel pain from that at the moment -I'm guessing from the adrenaline -but was sore from it later. Aftermath: After they leave, we enter into my apartment complex where a woman who witnessed the whole thing out her window is waiting and invites us in to her apartment. I lose it then, realizing that my girlfriend must have heard the whole thing and is freaking out. She did. We call the police -they come out and not much is done at that point. A detective comes and sees us the next day, takes my shirt for evidence as it has a shoe print on it and discovers that my friend's card was used at a casino. Unfortunately by the time the detective discovers this -their tapes were overwritten and the muggers are never found... well at least for our mugging. Thoughts: I never thought the gunman would kill me as long as I remained still, quiet and not threatening in any way. What if the gun had a hair trigger?... I don't know how nervous and hyped up this guy is. What I did turned out to be a good decision in my circumstance -as I lived and my friends lived. When I saw you draw the wallet and hand it over as a response -the first thing that came to my mind is that leaves the possibility that the attacker could think you are drawing a weapon. I'm not sure about the gun laws in Europe or Italy and how much they vary -but I'm under the impression that they are a bit more lax in the USA, and therefore -it's more likely that a normal pedestrian might be carrying -especially in Arizona. So dropping and letting the gunman or his friends take your wallet from you -seems to be more cautious approach -at least where I'm from. Funny thing is that one of the officers who came that night suggested I carry... I'm not sure what to think of that. If a gun was seen on me, that might have stopped them from attempting to mug us, but if they didn't see it and I tried to draw on them when they already had a gun pointed at me, I think it's more likely that I would get killed in that situation. One of my friends had re-occuring nightmares from the scenario. I guess when they threatened to kill who I thought was me when my other friend was trying to keep them from getting his wallet, it was in fact my friend who was crying and pleading with them as they held the gun directly to his head. I still, to this day, don't think I was close to death in that situation -and I only dreamed about it once. I thought about the training I had received in hindsight, but realized it would have been a foolish thing to do -especially with three of them there. If I was in a situation where I really thought the gunman was going to kill me, for sure, like put me in the trunk of their car and we were out in the middle of nowhere... I'd hope I would try the technique then. I do have confidence that it cooooould work -as it did in those numerous tries when I was 13 -as long as the gun wasn't held in a certain way. I'd still try it every now and again with friends, and it still usually works. The thing that is good about it is that it is easy to practice. When the (practice) gun is held to you, take a quick and strong grab at the wrist that is holding the gun. You will know, somewhat, from your own experiment, whether or not it would be an option for you in a TRULY DESPERATE situation. It was not in my instincts that night to use it... and that's probably a good thing. Be smart.

The thing is, even in America it is very unlikely to get mugged on the street with a gun. When a criminal owns a gun, he will most likely attempt to rob a store that has a few hundred dollars in the register which is also in a closed area where not many cops can look into. If he had to mug random people on the street, he would need to mug at least a dozen of them for the same money, and that's that many times more risks of getting busted or even shot by the police. If someone in America takes his gun out it is more likely he is from a local gang and wants you out of his hood, which means you got into a high risk environment in the first place.

Why does a he need to put a new round in the chamber of a semi-automatic pistol? Its double action a new round is chambered by the slide returning forward...
@theamericancristero73903 жыл бұрын
Well if I grab your pistol and you press the trigger, assuming I survive the manuever, the slide cannot reciprocate therefore it jams. Revolvers are preferable for "clinch" range fighting, especially bobbed hammer / concealed hammer double action only revolvers, you can shoot those from a pocket or purse. Whether the auto loader is striker fires (think glock,) single action only (1911,) double only, whatever, if you press it against someone you can easily press the slide out of battery and deactivate the trigger, if there's something behind the slide the pistol will jam, if someone grabs the slide it will jam.
@claudiodiaz97523 жыл бұрын
If the gun fires during all the grabbing it's possible that the gun will malfunction and jam. Racking the slide will clear most malfunctions. Double action is related to the function of the trigger and hammer, it has nothing to do with the fact the gun is semi automatic. A gun may be single action and semiautomatic. A revolver can be double or single action. Most mdern pistols are neither, they are strike fired instead, that includes Glocks, the gun the prop in the video is mimicking.

Its because when you grab the slide before it fire, you prevent it from sliding backwards.
@claudiodiaz97523 жыл бұрын
@@theamericancristero7390 There are many things to consider. Double action revolvers will not fire if you grab the cylinder, unless the hammer have been pulled pre-grabbing. If you survive the shot you may not have much of your hand left as well depending on the caliber, because revolvers generally release gases atvthe gap between the barrel and the cylinder. Most modern pistols will not fire if you push the barrel inwards due to the delay/locking system, since it will put it out of battery. But some will, special if they have a fixed barrels.
@chronicdose3 жыл бұрын
@@theamericancristero7390 this is a good explanation I was confused as well, probably because it seems they assume the perpetrator will not get to pop off a round. Limp grip/wrist def has caused malfunctions for new shooters I bring to the range, and I suspect if you miraculously hit the firearm immediately prior to discharge and survived, that it has a high possibility of causing a malf. I'd still probably pull the trigger and then rack if it didnt go off.

This video is so on point! These kinds of self-defence videos and instructors are incredibly dangerous and harmful. One good rule of thumb for choosing a self-defence school - if the words “fun” or “easy” are mentioned, run in the opposite direction. They will be teaching you fun and easy ways to die. I was lucky enough to train under a self-defence instructor who took his responsibility as someone teaching people to survive terrible situations very seriously. He used to test the techniques he taught us as close to reality as possible - knife defence against an actual sharp knife for example. In class we learnt that the first thing you do is to surrender and try to give the guy what he wants. Only if that doesn’t work and it becomes apparent that what they want is to do you serious harm, then do you fight. You are going to get hurt, but you may have a chance to survive. We trained with full resistance - if you’re the attacker you better be roughing up the other guy, shouting at him, trying your best to fight back once the move starts. Some of those classes were literal hell, but that’s unfortunately what you need to be prepared to fight for your life.

Alright, I had a very poor impression at the beginning of the video, as the technique they were showcasing is one that works, but if they didn't have any sort of a disclaimer about inherent dangers of the technique, I too would find it a bit suspicious. The teaching was awful, and the gun threat from the rear in particular was horrendously performed. You raised a valid point about it being dangerous to attempt a gun disarm, but consider that you're expecting rationality from an individual who is threatening your life with a deadly weapon. In a case where a mugger is not satisfied with what you're offered them, your "relinquishing the wallet" technique is not going to cut it. At such a point, it would be better to attempt do something than stand still and wait to be killed. Just grabbing and redirecting the firearm would raise your chances of survival significantly, as gripping the slide would prevent it from moving and induce a failure to extract, turning the gun into a useless paperweight. Even if they were using a revolver, the pressure of a single finger would not be able to force the cylinder to rotate, and if pre-cocked, then you can grip it in such a way that it prevents the hammer from falling on the firing pin. A knife is actually more dangerous than a gun at very short ranges. That said, they definitely should have included some kind of a disclaimer about the necessity of repeated training for the techniques to work reliably even if the video were merely a showcase and advertisement for their dojo. That's where we agree completely. We also agree on the Indian fellow's technique being absolute bullshit, though that should go without saying. In the absolutely ridiculously low chance of this ever occuring, those first 2 "rules" are actually correct. getting out of the way of the muzzle and then controling the gun. Grabbing the slide and forcing him to pull the trigger will not cycle the next round, so the aggressor really only has that 1 shot to kill otherwise he needs to rerack the pistol. You can train this ( why would anyone though?) and see that its actually "effective" most of the time ( i saw around 70% success rate when sparring, for shits and giggles). Here is the kicker though, no one who wants to kill you with a pistol will ever go point blank. Its specifically designed to work at range, only fools go point blank. That is an intimidation tactic , so the perpetrator is after something. As long as its not rape , its money or worst case its human trafficking ( yes its a real danger in 3rd world countries). But This kind of move has worked in real situations and is trained in CQC by special forces for a reason ( again, why train for this if youre not SF? ). And yes its easier to get a gun out of someones hand if he doesnt use both hands. And if he uses a 2 stage trigger its actually reliably possible to evade the first shot if aimed at center mass. This is because the one who acts first doesnt have to go through the full OODA lopp ( observe-orient-decide-act) He only needs to act. The one with the gun actually needs to observe first orient himsels and decide to kill and then act upon it. That might sometimes take up to a second. The more trained and ruthless the criminal , the shorter this OODA loop will be. UF pro did a nice video on it with a great experimental setup kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5DOZaqPp91mgNE Again , follow metatrons advice here and never risk your life for money. But if it was me in this 0.00000001% chance of this happening, and the result was me getting executed, raped or used for human trafficking i would rather know this than not. ( im a 240lbs , trained bald hairy dude , so again why would anyone traffick or rape me? lol) But yes these kinds of videos give people the wrong idea. What i find more infurirating are the "knife disarm" videos. Those scenarios are way more likely, and people need to understand that they will get stabbed, no matter how good they think they are.

I watched a video where Krav Maga instructor (really big, strong guy) said "When some points gun at you and asks your money - give them your money". And the part where he shows how to disarm is much more realistic then in these videos. Thanks, Metatron, for this great video!

I’m my opinion the best defense against a gun is to carry one yourself. Shoot first and ask questions later. That’s how I was raised and thats how my kids will be raised.

How can you shoot first if the other guy shoot you first?

You do realize that from an open holster without retention, 1.5 seconds is considered a good draw right? The Tueller drill or "21 foot rule" was codified on two averages: Takes the average man 1.5 seconds to cover 7 yards with a knife from a standing stop, and it takes the average cop 1.5 second to get one round off from the holster.

Sure, if you're in a situation where after you have assessed the complete threat and taken a safe position and then bring your fireafm into factor, ok. Not when you're holstered and someone has the drop at close range.
