While swimming at the beach why don’t we see sand or rocks on top and water at the bottom? This is because of sedimentation.
Sedimentation is the process where heavier particles settle down. The particles which have settled down during the process of sedimentation are called sediments. Because of sedimentation two layers have been formed water on top (liquid) and rocks (solid) at the bottom.
Now when you collect this water in a clear glass and keep it still for a while you would be able to see that the sand particles have settled at the bottom of the glass and the water on top.
You can even separate this water from the sand. Pouring out the liquid without disturbing the sediments is called decantation.
Further, if you use a muslin cloth to remove the dust particles it will be called as filtration.
Let’s learn more about methods of separation.
