That is a very impressive looking condenser!

Yes. The Friedrich condenser is very cool as it takes very little space to setup a distillation ( as the setup is vertical )

I like the video, however your theoritical yeild is only 20ml of MeI. I beleive your final product at the end of the video is mostly methanol. It would be good to mention this.

How about boiling the hell out of the entire reaction mixture to ensure that pretty much all the MeOH comes over along with the MeI? That way you can tell how much of the liquid you end up with is actually MeI

Isn't there a way to make this through electrolytic means? Or am I thinking about iodoform? (For those of us aren't allowed to have phosphorus or steak knives) Is CH2I2 stable? Is it a thing?

Nice glassware I've not seen before

You mean the Friedrich condenser?
@SodiumInteresting Жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm waiting for one like it

Hmm since phosphoric acid is a byproduct of the reaction could potassium iodide be used to increase the yield? They would react to make HI in situ which would create methyl iodide under acidic conditions correct? Great video and that condenser looks absolutely cool! What is the condenser called?

It's a good thought and worth a try. Thank you for the suggestion. Btw the condenser is called a Friedrich condenser and it helps in greatly improving the space as the distillation is conducted vertically thereby less space is consumed by the condenser

@@vibzzlab that's so cool!! I like some good efficiency with space!
