We are in Donegal, Ireland, right in the firing line for Friday morning. Generator prepped and ready to go, and always have oil lamps at the ready. Big pot of stew already cooked. Normal preps for me every winter. Good luck everyone, hope it takes a sharp turn north away from land

I hope people in the affected areas having taken precautions and topped up their phones, power banks, lamps, food, hot water bottles etc. as there will be quite a few shops closed or short of stock in remote areas. And take care anyone travelling out in this lot especially couriers, delivery people, utilities and rescue services.

Thanks for the timely warning. I've got extra coal and wood in for the weekend. Last time, I lost electricity for 54 hours and had to stay up nights, keeping the fire well stoked just to keep one room warm. Best wishes to those in the path of this storm.

We didn't have our school closed for the storm in 1963. We still walked to school and back again. And our toilets were outside. More ado about nothing. Needless to say the windier it is the better. I love the sun and the wind, more so when it's blowing a stooshie 😊🏴.

The 1987 storm was truly horrific. The loss of life and damage to property to say nothing of the tree devastation was a storm never to be forgotten. I lived and still live on the Essex/Suffolk border.

@Yes it was like a train coming through. I was laying in bed wondering what I would find the next morning. Meanwhile my husband slept through it totally unaware. Luckily we only lost a few peg tiles and the electricity for quite a few days.

Stay safe. Please get everything you need today and DO NOT DRIVE, or go out at all. It is not worth it for a day or so. Too many people die. Flying debris is highly dangerous - protect dogs too. Batten down the hatches and buy tins of food in. Enjoy a day at home. Safety for all. ❤. Be prepared.

Looking at the low pressure, it’s an equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane. Stay safe, Scotland and Ireland. EDIT - hurricane, not hurricain

A Cat 4 hurricane? lol a cat 4 hurricane is 131MPH to 155MPH and that is SUSTAINED winds not gusts. The 1987 Great Storm was sustained winds of over 87MPH or higher and over 130MPH wind gusts in a 3/4 hour period, mainly over the south east and London area. That storm knocked down over 15 MILLION trees in 4 hours.

I think once it makes landfall across Ireland it will possibly slip a little further south than this forecast suggests, Central belt Scotland looks like it will get battered wether it moves a little south or not or stays on suggested track. Wouldn't surprise me if by tomorrow we are hearing of 110-120 mph gusts in areas

Reminds me of " The January Storm" 1968, lot of damage then, though the tenaments are generally in better condition now. I can't remember as bad a forecast here since ( the famous 1987 one was milder this far north)
