The thing that is so great about Elina Garanca's Carmen was that she knew how to bring the seductive energy to the character with her voice and acting to the point where it feels real. Carmen is a character who's not only seductive, but she's her own boss and Elina nailed it! This is Tony-winning acting!

Like Shakespeare, it's not enough to just say the words, you have to properly PERFORM it. The Queen of the Night aria from Mozart's the Magic flute is a magnificent feat of vocal gymnastics when merely sung, but PERFORMED, this is a mother making a demand of her daughter with the musical equivalent of "I brought you into this world, and I CAN TAKE YOU OUT OF IT". [For prime example look for the KZbin video of it performed by Diana Damrau, The Royal Opera] Carmen is an utterly amoral temptress, wanton and seductive, and she needs to be performed that way. Elina Garanca NAILED IT.

Good support and breath technique is the answer. You only need to stand and plant yourself if you're a beginner. Lots of singers with good support and breath techniques can sing laying down, it happens a lot in rock singing especially. An example would be Maynard James Keenan from Tool and his weird posture in Sober live, and when he once sang a song while wrestling a drunk audience member who invaded the stage.

Which would be a fair point if he said the acting was much better in the earlier performance, but he didn't, he said it was "more dynamic", whatever that means. Opera is, of course, a balance of acting and singing, wouldn't disagree. To counter your point though, you can listen to an opera on the radio and enjoy it immensely, however you wouldn't get the same pleasure from watching it without sound, regardless of how good the acting is! :)

Watch The Coconuts: A Marx Brothers Movie 🎥 from 1929 ? It's a Musical; words and music by Irving Berlin. There's a scene that uses the music of the Habanero song as the tune for The Sheriff having lost his Shirt. Of course; Harpo took it and has it hidden. It was a Stage play originally. And yes, it is Funny and Sweet. Might be able to find it Free on KZbin.

CptSeagullEight - a lighter voice will not be able to get through the card scene in this opera. Think Julia Migenes-Johnson. She was a fantastic Carmen in the 1980s movie, but she herself said that she couldn't sing this role on stage. (edited to add) Besides - Carmen isn't an ingenue or young lady. She is a vulgar gypsy who works in a cigar or cigarette factory and occasionally helps smugglers by seducing body guards. Lighter voices are better suited for ingenues like Zerlina.
@jewelmarkess7 жыл бұрын
CptSeagull Eight Antonacci has an interesting voice. She actually started as a mezzo soprano and then switched to soprano roles apparently, so she clearly has strong low notes, IMHO. Now, Sarah Brightman would be a joke, she'd not even be heard in soubrette roles which is why I named Migenes-Johnson who has a light soprano voice and mostly performed in musicals, but who nevertheless was able to sing Lulu at the Met to much acclaim. Migenes-Johnson was a nice Carmen in the movie, not sure if you've seen it.
@jewelmarkess7 жыл бұрын
CptSeagull Eight - I was curious about Antonacci, so I read about her. I am not a singer even though I had voice lessons for personal enjoyment when I was already out of college and working. I had a light soprano, but it is way too light for opera. At any rate, I could never sing in public, totally losing it in front of people, maybe only in front of friends in my living room. I don't know much about metal though. Brightman voice is very small, nice timbre but so thin, and yes, she cannot do lower notes.

While the singing of Elina Garanca is impeccable, she seems to be enjoying letting her hair down so naturally as a young woman and not as a singer. one feels that the setting represents a natural tendency for humans to seek such natural basic conditions. This role is one which any woman would like to play, projecting femininity and a little natural naughtiness and flirting of any young healthy woman, climaxed by the expression, " And if I love you, watch out!" It is wonderful and a privilege to have Elina Garancia projecting herself in all the subtle roles of a beautiful woman. Well done Madam.

I'd estimate maximum 60% of the tickets were sold. I've never seen anything like that in Munich, Vienna, Salzburg, Paris, Zurich, London, Berlin or anywhere else in Europe.
