When I lived in Hyde Park, I took the Metra train for years at that very station before I moved to the Southwest Suburbs. Brings back memories.

My special needs son really likes Metra's bi level electric cars and the South Shore Line's single level electric cars he thinks they are highly underrated rail transportation vehicles and that the part of the Virginian Railroad that use to be electrified should be "reelectrified" as well as the part of the Milwaukee Road Pacific Extension that was electrified as well and the departments of transportation should run these on them.

The trains that head down south on the IC line (including the City of New Orleans) travel on those tracks via the St. Charles Air Line. You would've come into Chicago on the tracks that parallel the Chicago Skyway.

I believe the METRA Electric District is the old Illinois Central electric commuter line. METRA simply kept the overhead wires, probably upgraded them and continued their use. The line is also used by the South Shore Line electric trains to Michigan City, IN and South Bend, IN.
