Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light are some of of the best games I've played in a long time. Decent story, good stealth, great combat, incredible atmosphere. I played the redux versions, which greatly improve the stealth and make the combat a little bit more dynamic and ballistic.
@Dover939
@Dover939 6 жыл бұрын
Redux improves stealth and combat? I don't think so. They cut down a lot of the nuance to it. The enemy's accuracy was based on your visibility, if you were green, they couldn't hit you for shit. If you were yellow, they had decent accuracy, if you were red, you will probably die. In redux, there's just nothing and then visible. Not an improvement. Enemies don't care about your visibility.
@simkas
@simkas 9 жыл бұрын
Actually, the redux version completely overhauls the entire stealth system. It adds one button stealth takedowns and makes the stealth overall far far more forgiving and easier.

I just play original and the stealth mechanic was crazy hard, especially with human enemies like nazi and reds, they all wear helments means silent, one head shot kill is just impossible. Alarm raised will never go away by hiding, you have have to restart the whole section if that happens.

Just a note to people deciding between the original and the Redux: If you care about performance, go with the Redux. 2033 was one of the first DX11 games and it plays like it, meaning it performs like absolute liquid ass. If you're averse to variable framerate, then you will not enjoy the original, the Redux is worlds ahead of the original from a technical standpoint.

I pllayed it on a gaming laptop with RTX 2060 in it. The framerate fluctuated between 140 and 210 throughout the whole game which to me is absolutely bananas. Too bad the credits were part of a cutscene and thus kept roling at 29 FPS which looked awful.

A very fair & balanced review. I actually prefer the original to Redux. For all the improvements they made in Last Light, they also dumbed down the stealth, making the AI blind as Helen Keller. Also going from 3 different detection states (green/yellow/red) to just 2 was a poor choice. It felt like they took the easy way out rather than made genuine improvements. Playing LL, I missed how intense it was sneaking around and the genuine feeling of dread when you got caught from 2033.
@wes8723
@wes8723 9 жыл бұрын
+DrearierSpider1 I like the Redux version more, because even though now 2033 is easier, it's more enjoyable, more fair, better gun handling, more options to weapons and upgrades, the AI in gun fights is better than in original, less loading screens, every cutscene is now from 1st person view which is great, new rooms, new paths, more things to do in human stations, better optimalization and even though some of the graphics effects are missing, as whole Redux version looks far better - mostly outdoors
@EldritchAugur
@EldritchAugur 9 жыл бұрын
+DrearierSpider1 I have to agree, and I prefer the visual style of the original as well. Redux looks better on a technical level but it also looks very "gamey." It looks fake, with a bright bloomy style instead of the dark and grainy look of the original. I especially dislike the changes they made to D6, it looks like a level from Super Mario Bros. with bright green mushrooms instead of this ancient metallic sarcophagus it was in the original. Plus the wonky mechanics actually contributed to the games' atmosphere, nothing in the game felt certain, whereas in redux everything was so smooth and polished that I just felt like an ultimate stealth badass instead of the terrified clumsy oaf I was in the original.

A note about the MGR currency ammunition. In real life it's called 7n6 and it's a loading of 5.45x39mm for the AK-74 that's full metal jacket and has a small hollow space in the tip with mass in the back of the bullet, so that when it hits something, it tumbles like crazy, creating a much bigger wound than would be possible otherwise without breaking the Geneva Convention rule about expanding bullets. It's good stuff, and even though I don't have a 74, I have a few packets of 7N6.

Corridor-like gameplay makes sense, since you're literally in a corridor world...the metro. I think the level design captures the books really well. You can finish metro without killing a single person (except prescripted person here and there), stealth IS completely viable. Hell, there's even a karma reward system for doing so in the game and your ending will be different depending on your playstyle. You can even buy sneaking suit like armor. I've played through each of the games at least 5 times and I keep finding new stuff - the game is linear, yes, but there's lots and lots of stuff to explore, you just miss them at first...or second or third time.

Very good and fair review - all points considered. I really enjoyed the game because I love this type of dystopian point of view from Eastern Europe. Luckily, I can speak the language so that is helpful when playing the game. There are a few extra changes in the Redux version such as more places you can explore when you're outside (Dead City 1 for example) as well as the obvious graphic upgrades. Anyway, It's a game I love to play in the dark when it is raining or snowing outside. Good review!

I realize this is quite late to the party, but Redux has a lot more changes than just weapon handling, UI, and graphics. The whole stealth system was overhauled, and many levels updated to account for it. Beyond that, a small but welcome change was the connection of several levels that had previously be separated by a loading screen, which in some cases involved adding "connective tissue" in the form of small new levels.

Late to the comments but yes 1 or 2 bullets is all there is sometimes in Metro, in the book Artyom sometimes only had one mag or even a handful of bullets at a time, the army and hansa would have more than enough ammo but the people had next to nothing.

I beat Metro 2033 Redux on ranger twice, and both times I had the same criticism. The auto saves don't always work when you are moving through areas. More than once I lost 10-15 minutes of progress and exploration to bad autosaves only to come back through that area and get two saves in half the time. I didn't find 2033's ranger mode as difficult as Last Light's, where I was nearly out of oxygen on the surface at all times.

It doesn't quite rework everything in CoP but it does add quite a bit of atmosphere and difficulty in a similar vein of Brutal Doom. Would be interesting to see your thoughts on it. Regardless, great review, pretty happy you decided to touch on these games. Definitely some of my favorites.

not to mention, a remaster that actually significantly improves the game. Those metro remasters are genuinely the most beautiful games ive ever played, only rivaled by BF1 and Far Cry 5.

I wouldn't say the '33 and Redux are completely the same. You should totally play it, because they actually revise its stealth system to mirror Metro: Last Light. Anyway, cool review! Thanks for that.

I found that when playing any of the metro games in Russian the background characters speaking to each other would overrule the subtitles of the main person you're speaking to face to face. This made it impossible to pick up key plot points or clues.

For a game with so many freaking awesome and powerful weapons, this series sure did a good job creeping the shit out of me time and time again. Because I normally am too scared to finish any survival horror game with limited or no weapon supply. But in the Metro games, they always gave me a sense of security and power when I was between exploration until they started to throw creepy shit at my face for another around. For an easily scared player like me, it was almost masochistic to finish those two games. But damn wasn't it a hell of a ride.

Yep. To me the heart-pounding culmination occured inside the Library (those fucking apes...), as it well should. Other than that I found that the further I progressed, the more comfortable I felt around the dark. Nosalises (and the surface type, whatever they're called) make plenty of sounds before they approach so it's hard for them to take you by surprise. Lurkers are annoying af but they appear so rarely it doesn't even matter. I started out crouching basically all the time but later on felt secure enough running around like a crazy person.

+Der Krazy Kraut Pariah's campaign is so freaking boring. Same boring firefights over and over and over again. I liked the level creator, but it was a little bland and missing a lot of features or objects. Also spent way too much time trying to get the land and the buildings to cooperate with each other.

Thankfully, the Redux Version also improve the stealth mechanics by simply put the great stealth system of Last Light. And with that new gameplay twitch, the game is almost perfect. Great review as always.

Also, the trading isn't that bad, because the last station for trading is in Polis, so if you spend all your money there, it's fine, and past that, stealth is impossible, so you're not loosing anything spending all your money

Redux actually completely overhauls a lot of the game. Especially most of the complaints at the start of this vid. Stealth is much better. But it also adds multiple difficulties as well as the choice between ‘Survival’ which is more like the original 2033, or ‘Spartan’ mode which is more like Last Light. Playing on Spartan, which has a ton more resources for those who like to run and gun over stealth, and Normal difficulty combined make for a pretty easy, but not too too easy, experience. You can totally play Metro as a run and gun shooter having full ammo and resources the entire playthrough as long as you’re thorough. And even if you’re not thorough to be honest as ammo is everywhere. And on Normal, your health regens out of combat or even in combat if you can not get shot for a few seconds. If you want the challenge, it is there for sure on higher difficulty modes in conjunction with survival mode as well. But if you want more of a shooter experience, you can have it. You can have a harder shooter experience on Spartan Ranger or Hardcore or you can have an easier experience on Spartan Normal or you could go Survival Normal or Survival Hardcore. There are enough difficulty options to suit anyone’s playthrough. If you get frustrated then your difficulty is set to high most likely. I rarely stealthed my first two playthroughs of the game and it was a blast.

Having played both versions I have to say I prefer the Redux version. The lighting is more appealing if not more 'realistic' (I found the original too brown for my tastes, but I can understand those who prefer it that way), the performance is much better, and the cutscenes are mostly kept in 1st person, adding to the immersion. Stealth may have been 'dumbed down', but honestly it wasn't great in the original either (it was no Thief). Both versions are worth playing, but it's definitely more 'survival horror' than FPS.

Thanks, this video just reminded me I have this stashed somewhere in my closet. Good game asides from ammo annoyances and what not. Definitely would've played this at least one more time but I got so many games sometimes it's a bit hard to catch up. Worse yet, I have a regular job so don't have as much time for gaming as I used to but now I got an urge to go dig this game outta my closet...
