The 2 artists David Bowie admitted being heavily influenced by were both the late Duncan Browne & Scott Walker (the Walker Brothers) especially the LPs "Nite Flights," "Lines," and the track "No Regrets." Many of the effects and styles Bowie implemented throughout his albums were all done earlier by Browne & Walker. Look at the funky guitar sound Browne & Godwin from Metro used on "Overture from Flame / Flame" & then sliding into progressive rock and classical which is earlier than Bowie. Browne's "She's Just a Fallen Angel," "Wild Places," "The Crash," "American Heartbeat," were incredible. The musicians on these albums were superb. Despite the ignorance of some critics who never played an instrument -- a pen and a typewriter are not musical instruments. Later -- even Iggy Pop was an influence on Bowie's vocals. I happen to like Bowie & Iggy (during their period of collaboration) -- talented, creative and knew how to learn from others to shape their own performance benefit. That's not rip off, that's interpretation.

Brilliant, then and now. I still have the original vinyl that I bought in 1977. They were out of time, out of step and almost impossible to pigeonhole into any musical trend. The only other artist like them who survived glam rock was Bryan Ferry. "Criminal World" was banned at the time from airplay due to the suggestive lyrics and the album sank without a trace. It is one of those secret, brilliant pleasures that resides in a dark recess of your mind.

At the middles of the 70s I was a big fan of Bowie....Then I accidentally bought this album (Metro, 1977) -- i was instantly hooked and was always waitng for the NeXT album of METRO -- but it never came..... Then to my BIG surprice Bowie had a cover with Metro -- "Criminal World" (Bowie, 1983) .... at a time "nobody" had even heard about Metro...!!! I fucking looove this album! :) ..to bad they went into total oblivion after this...

I just discovered that Bowie's version was a cover of this song. I thought I wouldn't like the original because usually whatever version of a song I hear first is the one I like the best but the original version is pretty cool. Interesting to note a few line changes with the Bowie Version: Metro: I'm not the Queen, so there's no need to bow. I think I see beneath your make-up. I'll take your dress and we can truck on out. Bowie: I guess I recognise your destination. I think I see beneath your make-up. What you want is sordid separation Metro: I saw you kneeling at my brother's door. Bowie: You caught me kneeling at your sister's door.

This was one of the first albums in my record collection when I was growing up on Long Island. The group name and this particular song I always remembered so just now looked it up and wallah! Amazing the technology! I most likely bought the album at Looney Tunes in Babylon across from the A&S parking lot. And most likely I first heard the song on one of the college stations I used to listen to back in the 70's.....WFDU, WPKN, WUSB.... Or maybe it could have been WPLR back in them days when they knew what real music was, before the mindless corporations bought them out.

I can try to explain why this great music album didn't have the success it deserved. In the 1977 the Punk phenomenon explodes, the image on the cover is Dandy style and in any case too elegant, and the pieces are too refined for that period. Then in those days the fans were clearly divided: Punk, Rokers, Disco maniacs could not mix. Then the list of songs is very varied: Pop, New Wave, Sophisticated ballads, moments of progressive, easy rock and more, only established bands like Roxy Music could be so experimental. last thing: we can pay the credit to this work by making it known to friends and to those who appreciate good music.

Bowie substituted "my brother's door" for "my sister's door" for some maybe not so strange reason, but, nevertheless...
@labyfan13135 жыл бұрын
That's not exactly right. Original: I saw YOU kneeling at MY BROTHER'S door. Bowie: YOU caught ME kneeling at YOUR SISTER'S door. Seems like the original song centered around the "criminal girl" so the "you" at the brother's door is probably referring to her. Bowie decided to make it himself at the door so now he's at the sister's. The person who caught him could be the criminal girl though.

The original is superbly recorded and produced, however, it holds back and doesn’t satisfy as it seeks to dazzle but ultimately baffles as it meanders aimlessly. Bowie got right to the point and is a much better version. The royalty payments to Metro must have been nice too.

I can only hear things from the past , like this incredible song. it's not a matter of age or taste, it's just because music in my country is over.Now every singer comes from X FACTOR and shit like that. We won't have music like this anymore. If you don't believe me, you can try to listen to actual italian music....which is a shit. Fortunally i've always heard music from England and USA. Oh, yes...we have Vasco Rossi...ahahahaha !!! We had good bands during the seventies, bands like PFM, ORME,New Trolls and so on. But now...now it's the end. It is really curious understanding how music reflects perfectly the health of a country. Now Italy is a failure and music follows this trend.
