Watching this as a German, I'm wandering why the train doesn't have priority at junctions? The travel time would be so much shorter if it didn't have to wait at every red light.
@mrxman5812 жыл бұрын
They are working on that. Eventually all light rail lines will have signal prioritization on LA Metro.

@@mrxman581 Thats good to hear! Crazy how much money they are spending on these just for them to sit at red lights!!
@mrxman5812 жыл бұрын
@@oregonpaul3752 It's a process, but at least it's going in the right direction. Don't forget that SoCal and Los Angeles in particular have long centered much of it's culture around the automobile. Los Angeles, probably more than any other city in the world, see being able to drive a car as a birth right. Movies have been made about Los Angeles and cars like. Rebel without a Cause, Grease, Fast and Furious, etc. That type of generational stream takes time to successfully swim upstream. But we're making a lot of progress with each new generation of Angelenos.
@Geotpf2 жыл бұрын
When they filed the initial environmental impact reports, they had to take in account idle time of cars waiting for the train, under the laws in place at the time. This limited how much priority they could give the train, because cars while idling pollute, especially the older ones used in the calculations at the time. They had to keep that idling to a minimum to theoretically keep pollution to a minimum. The fact this made travel time for the train worse and therefore fewer people would use it (and therefore there would be more cars on the roads to idle in the first place) was not allowed to be a factor in the calculations.
@mrxman5812 жыл бұрын
@@Geotpf that calculus has changed as cars have gotten much more efficient as a whole much quicker than earlier thought. Metro has already said they are working on implementing signal prioritization. If I remember correctly, it could require replacing the equipment at intersections or adding smart tech that communicates with the light rail trains.

i think metro could shave off 10 minutes of ride time, considering that a traim waits around 6 minutes just for cars and train is slower, because train needs more tme to slow down and speed up than a car. Itcould also increase frequencies, which is something that both blue and expo line need.

To become an operator for metro, you need to apply to become a bus operator but you need to operate a bus for 2 years and wait until they offer the applications to operate on metro and they assign you whatever line they want you to operate on if you get accepted! In this particular run the train spent approximately 4 minutes stopped at traffic lights. So even with total priority the trip would still be around 40 minutes. The distance from Metro Center to Santa Monica is about 15 miles, and the trip here took about 46 minutes, giving an average speed of about 19 mph or 30 kph. That's pretty good for a line this long, and with the train running part of the way among other traffic.

@@Tuppoo94 Yeah, unfortuntely, the US hasn't caught up with the rest of the world in terms of internationalized nomenclature. That's beside the point: the trams are on their own track out of the way of any vehicle traffic, so they should be able to have the ability to bypass red lights. If it's accidents the city's worried about, then perhaps it needs to put up timed barriers for when the trams cross the intersection.
@Tuppoo944 жыл бұрын
@@hcs4life21 Or just put put traffic lights with full priority for the tram. Works fine in the rest of the world, because drivers who ignore them get crushed by the tram, and the average driver intelligence increases!
