Taken on August 16, 2017.
I couldn't film it leaving Grand Central since the conductor needed to be at the front so I had to wait for room.
There are only 24 M2s cars in service. Rush hours are the best chance. So I was lucky to ride one tbh.

Damn, I'd like to visit New York. Just to walk around different areas and look at the buildings. That's all. Take the trains and watch the scenery go by. I'm a simple man with simple dreams.

At 21:30 is the former overhead crossing of the New York-Westchester & Boston Railroad's Columbus Avenue - Pelham Railway Station. This was also a Transfer point to the New Haven Line which had a Station stop here. This Right-of-way used to run from the Mott Haven section of the Southernmost part of The Bronx to White Plains, NY. The railroad began construction in 1906 and built north, with the northernmost stations at Rye and Port Chester opening in 1928 and 1929. When most stations opened in 1912, the NYW&B was considered state of the art for its time, taking power from overhead lines, no grade crossings that obstructed car traffic, high platforms to enable comfortable boarding, and spacious, architecturally attractive ticket offices/station houses. The Automobile industry was starting to flourish during its early existence which had an adverse effect on its ridership. The other was the fact that it did not run into Penn Station or Grand Central for a one-shot ride straight to the city, although that could've been quickly resolved with rerouting traffic over the East River Crossing aka The Hell's Gate Bridge. Further plans to extend the route to Boston never materialized due to all this and by 1937 the railway was bankrupt and service ending was imminent. The power was shut down and the line and stations were sealed up and abandoned. The NYW&B sat listless for decades with a great deal of the rails and steel girders from grades and stations being pulled up, torn down and scrapped for usage of building materials for ships and submarines in World War II in the 1940's. This was the common fate of many of America's railways. For decades after the ROW was visible in many parts if you knew where to look, chock full of evidence of rail, signals, signalboxes, catenary towers, grade crossings and station houses/platforms. The 1980's, 90's and the new Millenium saw a major change with private developers and eminent domain laws claiming huge parts of the ROW for urban development and local community zoning organizations creating greenways and such. Many parts of the ROW have totally disappeared due to new business & housing developments or road & highway construction. I read somewhere once that whenever railways were deemed to have gone bankrupt, the city and state would often take the property and turn them into bike trails - especially when there is no date to resume activity after long periods of time have gone by. If after some time future budgets would allow they would be reassesed for possible reactivation into service. So far it hasn't been done in NY State that I know of (I could be wrong...). I do believe that if the State of NY would've held on to many of these commuter rail properties and not let them diminish, today there would be a lot more accessible and quicker ways to move in and out of the Tri-State area - especially with the incredible amount of traffic that exists today. The city and all of its outlying towns, villages and suburbs would've grown much larger had it not been for rail organizations-managements with poor financial misappropriation and lack of future vision.

@Lighthouse in the Storm Hey Lighthouse, I grew up riding trains in NYC - was always interested in the rail infrastructure of the city & their histories. I explored with friends some of the abandoned ROWs and stations in the past. It was fun then but much more dangerous and illegal nowadays.

NYW&B had the right future vision for what was then a largely unpopulated area. Unfortunately, its business model was a bust. Had it been able to hold on past 1937, it probably could have worked even without the one-seat ride to Manhattan. Certainly the railroad today would be SRO with the population in the area.

I moved away from Stamford to Dallas almost 22 years ago. It was nice to ride the train again. Many things are new to me!

Same here. When we lived in CT in the 50s and 60s and went past buildings like that, I would always imagine the people living there and come up with stories about them in my head to keep myself amused. Maybe other people can read in a moving vehicle, but not me.

For those saying the train is moving slow, it’s not. It’s due to the camera being so close to the window that it creates an effect that makes the train seems slower than how it actually is.

At 23:56 The New Haven Line merges with Amtrak and Acela's Northeast Corridor Line that runs the rest of the route to Boston, MA.

Metro North specifically picked the old M2 cars to buy used because they could accommodate DC third rail and be retrofit for overhead AC pantagraph. Their older cars were too tall to accommodate the pantagraph retrofit. Of course the new M8 cars were designed from the start to support both systems.

Born and raised in Stamford I would often ride metro North round trip Stamford to GCT and back..I loved watching this video.. it brought back some great memories..

I enjoyed this video. I miss riding the metro north, due to the fact that I now live on the Oregon Coast. I moved from the west Bronx two decades ago. The person that says these trains are slow never been on the metro north. Those trains can fly by like nobody’s business. I only remember the old M1, M2, M3, and M4 trains. Never got the opportunity to ride the new trains I bet it’s nice, it’s fun riding the express trains between Fordham and 125th Street and watching everything flyby from the window.

It’s 2023 and I’ve been an MNR commuter on the New Haven Line for 11 years. I’ve ridden many thousands of miles on the M2s, M4s, M6s and of course the current M8s. It’s nice to see the old M2s enjoying their last year or two on the network but by this time they were pretty tired. Seats were heavily worn to the point the padding was flat, floors felt like they were rotten and these trains had a cringe-inducing bounce over switches, even catching seasoned commuters off guard, especially those seated at the back of the cars. The heating and AC was hit or miss and we won’t even mention the small, filthy lavatories. Yet these workhorses were also well liked and represented a simpler time: bar cars (until 2014), no power sockets, paper tickets only and discarded newspapers at the end of each run. The Cosmopolitans were a big step up from the trains they replaced and actually entered service when I was 5 days old (!) Of course, once they’re gone they’re gone and they left without a lot of fanfare. I believe the last time I rode on an M2 was New Years Eve 2018, might have literally been that train’s last revenue run before being retired. Slightly different topic (but keeping with the nostalgia theme) the northbound I-95 tollbooth at 26:04 is another relic that is no longer around.

Even AMTRAK still had smoking cars; I certainly used them enough in 1978-1980 between New Carrolton and 30th Street Station in Philly. (There was even a "stoning car" on the Northeast Regional trains between Philly and DC; to find it, all you had to do was follow your nose. Even Senator Biden couldn't miss that!!)

Curious to see what the fork at Wakefield, where the Harlem and New Haven lines diverge, looks like from the front of the train. Had to hunt for it at 18:20. Wakefield Station is on the Harlem Division, so you don't see it in this video. The fork is north of Woodlawn.

My cousins lives in Bridgeport Connecticut, which I enjoy visiting. Great videos on the New Heaven Line. I enjoy taken the express train services, either from Bridgeport Connecticut or Harlem 125 Street. Your videos are great to watch on KZbin!

Great ride. I rode NH from Mamaroneck to NYC for high school & college from '67- '74 . Still had the beige/green bamboo seats. Loved riding standing by doorway....at Wakefield, where the catenary started , conductor would lean out the door to visually make sure the pantograph was raised to make contact. Then a back and forth of whistles between him and the engineer would signify OK.

18:13 this is the fastest switch I've ever seen a North American train make (I think N America generally has slower track switching than other established rail grids like Europe's and Asia's, for simpler maintenance + track construction, and because of more massive freight loading gauge)

There is a safety built into every M-2 car set that if you forget to drop the pans and switch to DC as soon as your third rail shoes hit live third rail it automatically drops the pantograph for that. Set of cars. To prevent a pantograph strike against a bridge.

Ride this line from NH to GCT when I go to a METS Game. Drivers are usually pretty friendly and leave the door open so the kids can peek in. Guess they don't like to be all closed up when it's not a full train. They get a little more cautious when the trains are full and it's peak hours.

You mentioned that from 24:00 on, this overlays the NEC. If anything, this part of the NEC looks a LOT like the post-Exton section of the Keystone Corridor (overlaid by the SEPTA Paoli/Thorndale Line).

Ah. 2017. That was the year I moved to New Haven for a short three year visit. I discovered that Connecticut rolls up their sidewalks at night, so spent many hours riding the M-N to Manhattan. Thanks for the cab view. It gave me the opportunity to see the NY-CT state line ( I think it's the post at 41:09) which appears to be a culvert rather than a bridge. Which explains why I could never really see it when riding the train.

I didnt think there were so many trains...busier than I thought...you should put in subtitles of the streets snd points you are passing. Where does the train come out of the hole?... 125st is the station Wesley Snipes 'flew' into in US Marshalls. The foot pursuit started in a Queens cemetery..LoL. Also this elevated line shown in K-PAX.

Excellent video, fantastic quality. Thanks for sharing it. 1. On this line, there appears to be few if any "track signals". I guess the signalling is indicated inside the cab, with the help of the chirping to slow down? The LIRR has extensive signals on the outside, and assisted by a similar chirp or bell. 2. The passengers who got on the train in the wrong direction weren't too brilliant, BUT I never heard the conductors ever announce that "This is the train to Stamford" either. Too bad you can't get this view for video recording any more on the newer cars.

The 'chirping' is the engineer's safety warning - they have to press it or any other device on the dash to show they are still awake...

When did Metronorth add the third rail to the New Haven line? The switchover from AC to third rail used to be just before you entered the old NYC interlocking from the New Haven line but the average M-2 trains back in the 70's were only 8 to 10 cars maximum. It I have to admit reduces the maintenance on the overhead by reducing the amount of overhead wire to maintain. Thank you for any and all answers

Excellent video. Almost imperceptible slowdown on the change over from 3rd rail to pantographs. I guess the "slow walk" from GCT to the bridge was due to rush hour traffic volume?

I was interested in watching for the changeover. I've taken the Harlem line into GCT many times but never NH. I was surprised the third rail continued so long. I seem to remember watching (from Harlem Division trains) and the overhead line started right after the NH trains swung away to the northeast. (I moved upstate years ago so I haven't been on a cimmuter train recently.)

You are correct - the change used to happen at Woodlawn, but was moved to just west of Pelham. But since it's just a change of power source - 3rd rail to catenary, or vice versa, it can be done 'on the run', at full speed. Plenty of videos showing this being done here on YT!

So I can’t help but notice at 4:41 the train passing a red wayside signal. His ADU may have indicated something more favorable but I’m pretty sure the rulebook still defaults to wayside governing signals. Did the signal pop up shortly after he got on top of the PTC transponder?

Philadelphia's SEPTA Silverliner V cars have them as well. Unfortunately, they don't allow passengers in the front row. You can sit in the 2nd row on the left of the car in the aisle seat for the same effect!

People say the third rail and caternary don't run together but for a little stretch they seem to. I believe that for the track where they run together, the overhead caternary is not electrified, somehow. In that case not sure why it's there - possibly to get the pantographs on before you absolutely have to. Supposedly having both power sources on at the same time would be catastrophic, but the M8s anyway, as far as I know do not ever retract their shoes.

Nope, the panograph does not up until the third rail end. The train coasts with no power for about 10 to 15 seconds.

Once outside the city, I didn't see a single line side signal. Is it all cab signals now? What's with the almost constant alerter beeps? Overspeed?

Couldn't tell if they were cab or alerter...non-stop! Didnt see any wayside signals until way outside city...one position-light on the cat pole. Alerter goes off regardless of speed. They are there to be sure that the engineer is still concious.

That's track 2 just FYI... the numbering is 3 1 2 4 from West to East if you're in NY or North to South more if in Connecticut :)

Are therese trains fitted with an internal signalling in the drivers cabin? I can't make out a sigalling system along the tracks, and i wonder ho wthe conductor knows when to slow down or even stop in the middle of nowhere.

What’s all the beeping for? I’m guessing alerts as the train slows and stops…. 32.00 min mark I didn’t see any signals or issues on the track.

Damn visiting new york city look at the buildings on west 33rd street and taking the train to grand central terminal in one hour and fifteen minutes from stamford to jamacia station which takes about 15 minutes later than you think.

Man Amtrak is getting better and faster trains for those that need to get some where faster I am happy to hear that I can someday ride the Miami to Orlando to Disney world to Tampa FL soon on virgin train some day Amtrak Will have faster trains to get across America I just love train rides thay are smoother than bumpy turbalance plane flights flying makes me feel sick to my stomach I wish I could take train rides across America

I riden metro North railroad from Waterbury CT to Bridgeport CT and I liked the Ride I do think that the train should run from Waterbury CT to Hartford CT too and make the Waterbury CT line electric

nice footage, although I always laugh so hard at the superslow crawl from stations like GCT, Penn Station or stuff like Boston South Station :D it's as if the rails near those stations were made of glass instead of steel :D

It's what you call a "dummy" signal. It only has two indications which are two red lights for Stop and a flashing green light for Proceed under cab indication. The Metro North system works under an unusual cab signal system. Before that, the New Haven Railroad used semaphores; even in the '80s!

Michael Wakeham I explain there are 11 Am peak new Haven line trains that do not stop at 125 and in the pm there are 15pm peak new Haven line trains that bypass 125 however yes all metro north trains stop at 125 during off peak hours

18:30 or so a bit after that track you see that's I think 3 of the New Haven line or whatever number it's assigned there as being part of the Harlem is the "flyover" but I could be wrong

Also funnily when approaching just short of Mile Post 12 or around there, I think it's called Woodmont where the NH line branches off from the Harlem Line, you can't be on the track 4 (right-most in this video) because it doesn't connect to the NH line.. it keeps you on the Harlem. You have to be on 3 or 2... so Left-most or second from the right, which you can see he was on.
