There is a difference between not being able to speak the language (for one reason or another) and not being willing to speak it even though you know it. This person apparently spoke English just fine. He simply refused to service this man and he did it because the man spoke English. It is simply out of the feeling of ethnic superiority, not because of the ability to speak one language or another. Here in New York, we try to help everyone, no matter what language they speak.

If the French Quebecois want to live in a French only society, I say let them but not the French only society the have in mind. I propose a solution that will end the never ending nonscience of French Quebecois anti-English bigotry and anti-Canada seperatism once and for all and it is called RELOCATION AND ISOLATION. The French Quebecois should be relocated from the Province of Quebec and resettled in the Canadian islands of Cape Breton Island and Prince Edward Island. The Anglo Canadian Cape Breton Islanders and Prince Edward Islanders should then be relocated from Cape Breton Island and Prince Edward Island and resettled to the Province of Quebec. Once the French Quebecois have been resettled in both Cape Breton Island and Prince Edward Island, they will be able to live in a sealed of French enviorment where only the French language and culture will be supreme. The French Language will be established as the official language of Cape Breton Island and Prince Edward Island. The Province of Quebec will then be ANGLICIZED from a French province into an English Province once the Anglo Canadian Cape Breton Islanders and Prince Edward Islanders have been resettled there. The mainland of the Dominion of Canada will be an ENGLISH ZONE while the islands of Cape Breton Island and Prince Edward Island will be FRENCH ZONES. The Canadian Government can then even potentially sell both Cape Breton Island and Prince Edward Island to the Republic of France. At one time both Cape Breton Island and Prince Edward Island was once a French colony called ILE ROYALE. For more of the former French colony of Ile Royale go to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%8Ele-Royale_(New_France) . I say it is time to restore the former French colony of Ile Royale (Cape Breton Island and Prince Edward Island) and give it back to the Republic of France which would be populated by both French Quebecois and even French Acadian anti-English bigots and anti-Canada seperatist traitors. I am sure that the Republic of France would welcome 2 Canadian Islands with a combined area of 6.171 sq miles in Cod and Haddock rich waters. Heck I am even open to the idea of that the Dominion of Canada should also sell Anticosti Island to the Republic of France to seal the deal. Cape Breton Island, Prince Edward Island and even Anticosti Island can then be populated by French Quebecois and French Acadians. Maybe the Canadian Government could also sell the Magdalen Islands too to the Republic of France, after all these islands are populated by just French Quebecois. After millions of French Quebecois have been removed from the Province of Quebec, they will be replaced by millions of Anglo Canadians. The Canadian Government should offer Anglo Canadians the homes and buisness of the French Quebecois as an incentive for them to move to the Province of Quebec. The French Language should be removed as the co-official language of the Dominion of Canada and the Province of New Brunswick and as the sole official language of the Province of Quebec. The English Language should be established as the sole official language of the Dominion of Canada and it's Provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec. The Dominion of Canada should sell Cape Breton Island, Prince Edward Island, Anticosti Island and the Magdalen Islands to the Republic of France and let the French choke on the misserable and ungratefull French Quebecois and French Acadians. The Dominion of Canada is an ENGLISH nation, the Province of Quebec is an ENGLISH province and the Cities of Montreal and Quebec City are ENGLISH cities. Anglo Canadians must remember and cherish the brave and courageous British Royal Soldiers, Sailors and Marines and the Royal American Militamen who died in the French and Indian War to drive the French from North America and to make Canada ENGLISH. GOD SAVE THE QUEEN AND LONG LIVE THE DOMINION OF CANADA ENGLISH IN LANGUAGE AND BRITISH IN CULTURE UNITED AND STRONG FROM THE ATLANTIC OCEAN TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN.

What is your oppion of my idea on the RELOCATION AND ISOLATION of the French Quebecois anti-English bigots and anti-Canada seperatist traitors from the mainland of the Dominion of Canada to the Canadian islands of Cape Breton Island and Prince Edward Island and maybe even on another Canadian island of Anticosti Island. I believe that the French Quebecois and maybe even the French Acadian populations of the Dominion of Canada should be allowed to live in sealed of and isolated French only zones with in the Dominion of Canada in Prince Edward Island, Cape Breton Island and even on Anticosti Island. The mainland of the Dominion of Canada including the Province of Quebec will become an ENGLISH ZONE. The French Quebecois and French Acadian anti-English bigots and anti-Canada seperatist traitors can have super autonomy on Prince Edward Island, Cape Breton Island and Anticosti Island and will be able to live their lives free from the English language and culture of the rest of the Dominion of Canada. I think that it may be wise for the Dominion of Canada to sell Prince Edward Island, Cape Breton Island and Anticosti Island to the Republic of France and let the French choke on these misserable and ungratefull French Quebecois and French Acadians who moan, cry, bitch, groan and whine about every single God dam thing English in language and British in culture. Once the millions of French Quebecois have been removed from the Province of Quebec, millions of Anglo Canadians will take their place with the promises they will get the homes and buisness. I believe that the Province of Quebec must and should be ANGLICIZED from a French province into an English province just like what Lord Durham recomended in his "Report on the Affairs of British North America" in 1839. The Canadian Government should outlaw the Parti Quebecois and the Saint Jean the Baptist Society. The Canadian Government should abolish Bill 22 (Official Language Act) and Bill 101 (Charter of the French Language). The French language must be removed as a co-official language of the Dominion of Canada and the English language must be established as the sole official language. The Dominion of Canada should be English in language and British in culture. GOD SAVE THE QUEEN AND LONG LIVE THE DOMINION OF CANADA.

This is an interesting question. I am from Toronto. I now currently live in MTL. I can tell you from my experience working in Toronto, Ontario even though French is the second official language it is not required for employees to speak French. In Government held positions though they do require you to speak both languages. BUT THAT BEING SAID Never has it ever been normal in Toronto to refuse service to someone who does not speak English. They will always find a way to help you. I worked in a restaurant downtown next to the bus station. I had french guests EVERY WEEK that didn't speak english. We always went the extra step to make sure they have a good experience despite the language barrier. Even if it meant using google translate on my phone. This attitude of refusing service to someone because of language really shows the common attitude here.

I find this story amazing. I have visited Montreal many times, it is one of my favourite cities. I had two reverse experiences. 1. I was in Howard Johnson's Restaurant on Peel Street, and when I tried to place my order in French, the waitress, a blond haired young women asked me if I spoke English. All of us, including the other employees though the whole episode was funny. Here is an American trying to use French and he gets an Anglophone waitress who does not speak much French at all.

Indeed, however the issue in Quebec is also (equally) complicated as in Flanders. This case was indeed a very unfortunate situation on the public transport, but think about this: A lot of Walloons come to Flanders only to expect that they are treaded in French. I do also speak French and English, but when visiting Ghent for example, I would expect the Walloons to at least try and speak Dutch. I do the same when I go to Wallonia but for French. The thing is that the French speakers in Quebec have also been discriminated because they speak French for a long time. When they go to Toronto for example, none of the people there will speak French. But yet, when English speakers visit the francophone Quebec, they suddenly expect everyone to also speak English. It's quite unfair and I fully understand the point of the Quebecois in this as a Flemish citizen.

I'm from Saint John, NB and I suffered a sever stroke back in 2005, but went to visit my Aunt in Montreal and borrowed my Boyfriends Dads scooter to get around a lot faster. First of all, no ramp, so my Boyfriend had to carry the scooter down the escalator and wiped out twice and ended up in a 4 person pile up! We all were coming back from eating supper when the Metro started up, then stopped fast, started up again, and stopped even faster and I went flying off the scooter, hit my head on the drivers door and my whole body was bruised on my whole left side. We asked them for compensation and didn't get nothing! That's not fair to us, and had to spend the rest of our vacation where my Aunt was living. Come to find out, there were no stairs for me to go up, just an escalator at my Aunts stop!

Montréal n'est pas une ville bilingue. Il n'y a que les Anglos pour dire une telle chose. Montréal est une ville française depuis sa fondation, donc tout le monde doit faire l'effort de parler français pour s'intégrer. Same story in Flandres (Dutch part of Belgium) : people speak French but nobody will talk to you in French in public administration or often in stores. This guy called a town hall in Flandres and spoke in French, nobody answered ; when he explained he was an ambassador from a French speaking African country and that he didn't speak Dutch, the guy went to the mayor and came back with the permission to speak French... If they did not do that, Dutch (well, Flamand) would become less and less used ; Bruxelles was a major Dutch speaking city in the 19th century, now it's 90% French speaking.

What's so damn complicated about it? I live in the only true bilingual area of Canada and yet when south of the river i speak English. When north of it i speak french.

I just came back from Montreal with my sister and something similar happened to us. We didn't know a lick of French so we asked a train booth worker how to get to a certain street by train. My sister was the one that asked him and he answered once and very fast. My sister asked him again because she didn't hear him at all and he refused to answer again, sarcastically staring at my sister. We went to the wrong station but eventually some nice lady helped us and we were able to get back to our hotel at downtown Montreal, right behind the old Montreal place. We had other incidents as well and we decided never to go back to Montreal again.
