I was stationed at Scott AFB from 1999-2002 and I remember them installing the rails outside the base. Before, you had to go to SWIC/BAC to catch the Link. That was my dorm at the beginning of the video. It’s amazing to see what’s become of this after so many years.

I live in Shiloh, Illinois, and the light rail system is the St Louis MetroLink.

Strange to see a light rail train in farm country.

This line is almost a revival of the ILLINOIS TERMINAL RAILROAD that ran between Southern Illinois and St Louis Missouri.

they could extend the line just a tiny bit further east to put it within walking distance of midamerica!!

i’ve never ridden before but i have been thinking of taking a day to ride the majority of the metro link for fun. that said, i’m sort of nervous about how i pay? sometimes i like to jump on the local buses and ride around the city for the dollar i drop in the box, but i don’t think the train goes by that same payment standards. if anyone could give me a simple break down of the getting on and off process to keep me from looking like an idiot that would be greatly appreciated.

You just buy a ticket or a pass, using cash or credit card. It is simple.

great downtown+airport right-of-way, but other stations are in middle of nowhere

They're not in the middle of nowhere; those are important centers of population, most with parking lots for commuters to park their car and ride. The Illinois side of the metro area is less built up than the Missouri side, hence much of the farmland, but all of the stops are in important commuter towns/suburbs that are just more spread apart.
