What a masterpiece of writing, direction and acting.The writing......... up there with Dickens, George Orwell, Jules Verne and Motzart. The direction ......Not often seen these days. The acting ......Priceless. The scenery and cityscapes would have made Albert Speer green with envy. I am ashamed to admit that I have seen this classic a few times over my 60 odd years and this is the first time that I haved watched it all the way without getting bored.Makes a lot more sense.Thanks for posting....:}

It's sad how few people appreciate how far ahead of it's time this film is. Unless it has explosions, car chases, or sex scenes, and ESPECIALLY SOUND, nobody today wants to watch it! So many great classics, forgotten and ignored.

good points ... and fact of the matter is this movie does also have some 'modern technological suspense' etc such as cars and planes and even strong suggestively sexual scenes in it ... but today audiences don't find them 'real' ... some today 'family movies' sex scenes happen to be more openly sexual than some porn movies imo ...

This film was NOT ahead of its time! It was a timely statement about labor and management that was at the heart of all revolutions from the French to the Russian.! And more, the ongoing struggles between management with the arrogance of the bosses and labor in the U.S. gave the Bolsheviks a foothold in America. In the 1920s, this was a very timely topic!

If you play it at .75 or .5 speed the movement is more natural. At that time films were shot mostly at 16 FPS but today 24 and 30 are more likely so the silent movies don't appear as they originally did

@@Stanbott no, the speed as presented is the correct speed, it is synced to the original musical score which proves it was meant to be played at 24fps, even if it was filmed slower

Filmed and released in 1927, supposed to take place in 2027 (some say 2026, but I like round figures...), it would be great if some real studio wizardry could be made to this film for the 100th anniversary in 2027, and released for a limited run at select theaters, as well as on streaming services.

I've not seen this in decades. Obviously not this print. I saw it in a small private theater from the projection boot. It seems I forgot just how good it was. I am much older now and can see more in it that I did then. Back then it seemed like it was worlds away. Now. . . it seems like nearly modern life. Great film from before the censorship started up.

I have such mixed feelings about the re-added 16mm footage. While it's super exciting that we have a closer-to-complete version of this classic masterpiece, the 35mm and the 16mm really don't sit together well. Some additions, like at 10:42, add nothing but distraction.
