Metsovo is a mountain town in the prefecture of Ioannina at an altitude of 1,160m. Traditional settlement, located at the eastern end of the prefecture, near the borders with the prefecture of Trikala, on the northern slopes, between the mountains of the largest mountain range in Greece, Pindos.
It is built between towering mountains, with Lakmos higher at 2295 m and Mavrovouni at 2159 m, located a stone's throw from the Pindos National Park (Valia Calda) and two ski resorts for winter sports enthusiasts and can boast comfortable for its rich cultural and spiritual history.
It is the homeland of several great national benefactors such as George Averoff, Nikolaos Stournaris and Michael Tositsas, in whose honor our National Polytechnic was named Metsovio.
Much of the development that Metsovo recorded in the economic and intellectual sector over the centuries, is due to the seemingly isolated position of the settlement. And this is because it is the passage, through the mountain pass of Katara, between Epirus and Thessaly. Its importance was recognized not only by the Byzantine emperors but also by the Sultanates during the Turkish occupation who had placed Metsovo under a privileged regime, thus trying to gain the favor of the inhabitants regarding the control of the passage between Western and Eastern Greece.
Metsovo, in addition to the historical elements and the rich cultural and spiritual tradition that characterizes it, has become known for several other reasons. The beauty not only of the natural landscape but also of the settlement itself are a pole of attraction for tourists. The settlement is built amphitheatrically at an altitude of 1,200 meters while most of its houses are stone mansions, several of which have been restored with special care and attention.
It has a central square where several events and festivals take place, especially in the summer months when the weather is favorable, while around it there are several taverns with delicious meat, traditional cafes and several shops with folk art, local cheese and other goods. Besides, many residents of Metsovo are even professionally engaged in the arts of woodcarving and weaving, which seem to be "revived" due to the strong demand for their products by tourists.
