This is what I hated when I studied art school, most of my professors were near retirement age and long gone from the industry. Some had wisdom to partake but most of them were a dollar a day types and taught skills considered obsolete or irrelevant to the industry. We weren't prepared when we graduated but that's in the past now, thank god for the plethora of information nowadays.

You and many other artists live in or near California where animation and illustration creative minds roam freely. So even though it’s hard to find a job it’s easier to find if that makes sense. There are people like me where I live in a secluded small town that’s not is not well known. No where near any art schools or studios. The nearest big city that has hope is Columbus an hour away from me. I can’t afford to travel for a job. I want to make art a career one day. But my location makes it very hard for me since I do anime style art and my town is a historical town where people are into only landscapes like bob Ross and Thomas Kinkade. I’ve had people tell me to go into traditionally painting landscape because even my digital art wouldn’t sell locally. I’ve had a online friend who lives in the same state tell me that it took their town 8 years to accept comics as an art form. You just have to push and push through the negative bullying towards digital I guess. 😢

I'm sorry to hear about your struggles. I originally came from New York, which even as big of a city it was, there was nothing animation / cartooning related near me as well. Only fashion, graphic design, commercial work. I think if there's any way for your to work towards moving out of your hometown and get to a city that aligns with your artistic sensibilities, that's a good goal to have. However, I understand it's a lot easier said than done, but either way I'm rooting for your to be able to find a place where your talent is valued!

It’s kind of impossible to live in California & work in animation right now anyway between housing costs & the writer’s strike

@@Texasyellow5687 I mean there are remote animation and studio jobs yes but all of the ones I’ve seen on indeed require you to still live near the studio hiring or be able to afford travel and gas alone is expensive. And with inflation no mater where you go…you are basically selling your soul before you even start that new job if you even make it in after hire.
@autumnsartstudio

@@Zistheone2 yes there is the strikes etc. but there’s probably more regular job options there too. I wish this town I live in is more open minded creatively. The only thing I can do here is retail, 98% of the jobs here are factory based and due to my mental health and disabilities I can’t do that type of work.

@@Texasyellow5687 I'm sorry the advice sounds tone deaf. I'm aware of the privileges of working in a union studio, but I've also grown aware of the imperfections of working in this career path as well. Unionization doesn't always guarantee rights protected, and there are still cases of studios taking advantage of artists in discreet ways. While there is a lot to be grateful for, I still want to be responsible in informing people who want to make a career out of art/animation about the drawbacks / realizations that may hit later so people can make the best informed choices about their own future. I personally feel like it would be irresponsible if I kept talking up / praising working in LA/Cali only for people to come here and then have something unexpectedly bad happen they were uninformed about.

As a 20 year working animation person, I've studied advice prior to my generation, during and younger than my generation. All this advice is valid. Very inspiring. Great job mewTripled! You get an A+.

Even mega-genius artists can get content, stay at the same job as long as the pay-checks come and let the dreams whither. It's not the quality of your art but the quality of your ambition that counts.

you called me out at 14:46 💀Tomorrow is my Senior thesis film premiere and Saturday I graduate! As much as I hope my little midwest portfolio can catch eyes over in the LA area, I know chances are slim. But this video reminded me so much to worry less and just focus on what I wanna make. Thank you meesh

Hi Michelle!! It’s really nice to turn on your videos whenever I’m feeling lost about my art path. I very much connect with the feeling of “settling” I’m currently deciding between two colleges where I would be taking animation at one (my dream major) or illustration at other. Only real issue is money so that’s why I feel like I must “settle” for illustration since the college is offering me more financial aid. I’m not really sure what to do and I really don’t want to feel like I gave up on my dream :,)

hmm, yes context for advice is important! developing an audience is so important to leverage your skills, I just started trying myself this year, instead of sporadically doing things that might not consistently develop a following

My tutors in graphic design were and are still working in graphics, so most of their advice for getting a job was current, I just wasn't going to play along with their advice and intern for free for a month, no matter how 'normal' it is in the industry

Multimedia designer here, currently job searching but also keeping my options open. But what you said about wanting to resonate with our "kid self" to find your passion. 3 years ago i switched my major from business to technical art in hopes to find that adolescent happiness again. I still don't really know specifically what i want to do, but i feel i am going in the right direction now at least. Things are hard for now, but i am still glad i made the switch. I love your talk, thank you for the content! 😊

My artist career so far is just, Take whatever indie animation work I can get and then do personal youtube/twitter work otherwise XD It doesn't pay but it's fine I don't pay my parents rent to live here.

@@mewTripled Oh totally! I'm running my only mini art shop w/ fandom merch (specifically a smaller indie fandom that the creators do not mind fanart being sold) and like sure it doesn't pay much but I'm very happy doing it! As for youtube, I'm still trying to get around to making vlogs but I just struggle to actually sit down and edit them XwX But I want to some day! And yeah!! I just graduated a year ago and my parents have been understanding and don't mind housing me :)

What would be your opinion on how to choose a different career that you would be interested in, other than art? Like, how would you narrow down on one and know that's the one you want to do, if you had multiple other interests? If you reply, thank you. I would appreciate it

I am to scary that AI art just take away all the art jobs ☹️, maybe being and artist in the future will be obsolete like many other professions😢
@mewTripled
@mewTripled Жыл бұрын
I think the concern is valid, but I don't think being an artist will be obsolete! There are measures actively being taken now to regulate it better, and even if it's not perfect for now, there's a start!

Just by pausing the video around 5 minutes, already can say you are working hard, that means: you achieve goals and move forward (is the only way). So I would advice people to follow their dreams but in a practical/groundtohearth method/way. Now take the video further, we have to adjust our expectations to reality in a way that let us stay relevant to our time. That means study of market (what is in demand). Video is informative, I just got my takes on it.
