@@Ponzupacket Tennessee relies heavily on sales taxes and excise taxes that don't exist at the federal level (many western nations have a federal sales tax). The State budget is also 40% funded by the federal government via transfer payments. Tennessee is one of the states that receives more federal money in transfers than they send via federal taxes. Most people have no idea how much of their basic services are paid for by federal funds as they are funneled to the States via block grants and the services come from State/County/Municipal agencies. Congressmen know, and you will see even the reddest state politicians freak out if the federal money stops coming in to their districts. For example, they all say they want to get rid of the Department of Education. They just want the department gone, but they want the federal money to keep flowing but with no strings attached so they can spend it any way they want (vouchers, private schools, religious schools) so there is very little savings as the vast majority of DOE budget is doling out grants. Regarding replacing income tax with tariffs, there is no way that tariffs could make up for federal income tax revenue, which makes up almost 50% of it. The more you crank tariffs, the more you kill demand. If the goal is to spur domestic consumption and reduce imports, fine, it would be painful but would have that result, but then you have no tariff revenue.
