Scquagilychicken Not so sure about that. The aztecs, huastecos, chontales, yaquis, mayas, etc. were not Mexico. Our ancesters (both indian and spanish) became spanish citizens after the conquest and during the so called "colonial" era, since the spanish did not stablish colonies like the british, but "provincias de ultramar". Mexico did not even exist, and New Spain did not comprehend modern day Chiapas and the Yucatan Penninsola (Campeche, Yucatán, Quintana Roo). Our worst crisis as a country started after the independence war, and perhaps after the dissolution of the First empire. It is time to leave our "post-colonial" whinning behind.
@ppaaccoojrf7 жыл бұрын
+Enzo You're actually quite wrong. Mexico did exist, it was one of the names given to the city due to the name of the people (the Mexica people). And while it's true that Spanish and British colonialism was quite different, "provincia de ultramar" only means overseas territory, and it's only a name given to the colonies (which is incidentally directly equivalent to the name used by the French, whose colonialism was much more similar to the Brits', at least in North America). And new Spain _did_ include Chiapas and Yucatan, and even all of Central America (with the exception of Panama) plus the Spanish Caribbean and even the Philippines. I do agree with your last portion though. Post colonial whining is pointless.
@enzocompanbadillo53657 жыл бұрын
ppaaccoojrf Indeed, Mexico-Tenochtitlán was the name of the capital of the aztecs,which is not the same as the modern nation-state called Mexico. No, a province is part of a bigger country or empire. I dont know what the french term is or how that affects my comment. You got me there, New Spain was a virrenaido, that included several kingdoms and capitanías. Still, that was not Mexico as we know it, and novohispanos were not mexican, just as apaches or cherokees were not US citizens. If we applied that logic, cubans would also be mexicans, but Mexico is not the same thing as New Spain.

That depends on whether you consider prehispanic Mexico City and European-built Mexico City to be the same entity. Mexico-Tenochtitlan was founded in 1325, and it´s sister city Mexico-Tlatelolco in 1338, eventually becoming a single city known as Mexico during the 1470´s. If I´m not mistaken, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic´s capital, was founded in the 1490's, while modern, European-built Mexico City dates from 1521.

Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Tijuana, Queretaro, Veracruz, Merida, Acapulco,Cancun, etc. have very unique problems that looks like a different country for example Tijuana have problems with drug traffic and immigration but in Merida have problems like pollution or problems related to fast growing cities and nothing of drug war.

Mexico City is one of a kind and extremely underrated. A hidden gem. It might not be on par to the standards of people who have no interest in art, history and architecture and tend to like modern places but on that same note, it's not a concrete jungle like NYC, it's not a wannabe-modern-western city like Dubai or Shanghai. Mexico City holds such a bold, unique, diverse and vibrant character as a city. I am amazed every time I go to Mexico City for its history, artistic spirit, chaos, colourful areas, modern parts, rich areas that resemble Europe, sculptures, and more historical European areas. Mexico City is truly a European city placed in the Americas. It's not a city like Manila, where there's like only 15 historical buildings, a bland culture that is non-existent and caters to American culture and the English language nor is it a place in a communist country or a place that is a step away to sharia law. I'm not even Mexican, nor anyone in my family is Mexican. I am not remotely biased but I love to compare. I think that in a perfect world Mexico City would thrive even more, they deserve the best of the world. I wish that one day they could deal with their corruption issues and put more effort to making their city and country shine. Mexico City It is by far my favourite metropolitan city in the Americas and it makes it to my top 5 favourite cities in the world. if you're a cultured person who enjoys architecture, history and gastronomy, Mexico City is the place for you.

Cool video; just a slight correction, the Spaniards didn't win because of greater Spanish military, but a force of 10000 soldiers from surrounding tribes, bands and nations. It's written by a first account by a spaniard in the book " the conquest of new spain", I believe by Bernal Diaz.
@MajoraZ6 жыл бұрын
More then 10,000, the Spanish had 200,000 allies when they toppled the Aztecs, and continued to rely on native armies to conquer the rest of the region. "Tribes and bands" is also inaccurate: Mesoamerica was almost entirely city-states, kingdoms, and empires with urban ciities at the time.

I'm Spanish, and I personally think that the biggest mistake of the colonialist was covering all the lake and dismantle most of the buildings. I was them and I would have done like romans. Why roman civilization became so far? because when they conquered Greece, they got impressed about their culture and architecture and toke it as reference for improve its own civilization, even perfecting it. Those old Spanish should have taken instead some elements of art, technology and architecture and get imported to old metropolis. Another rooster would have sing, but well, all because catholicism which not only ruined America, but even Europe. Formely Al-Andalus was even technologically, academically and infrastructurely more advanced than most of Europe in Middle Age. After Reconquista much things got lost as happened with Mexico-Tenochtitlan conquest.

Around minute 8 the narrator comments on a system to collect raining water, be advised that most water that falls in the cities is heavily contaminated and simple filtration methods will not do for human consumption. It is irresponsible to talk about it without also mentioning proper precaution. The heavy metal and toxic minerals that attach to city rainfall cannot be stripped with filtration of any kind, and require chemical treatment (which is very expensive and generates it's own chemical waste) in order to be safely drank.

Arc smart comment.
@JZ17776 жыл бұрын
Your comment is very good, be advised however that in Mexico City people drink filtered water purchased in their local store, most of not all do this. The collected water would be used for non drinkable uses. Even then filtration would have to be good enough so that residues aren’t left behind.

I from México, I've been México city 3 times and this city It's so beautiful and has many places that you have to visit, this city has all interesting things, I mean, beautiful ang big downtown, a real castle, many parks, many buildings and skycrapers, delicious food, six flags, acuariums etc etc! Well, the population is almost 23,000,000 people! It's a big problem, the city is falling and there's not much water. Anyway, visit and enjoy this city, you are welcome! :) thanks for the vídeo! ¡Viva México!

I'm from Europe and i'm happy and i'm not a savage. If those people weren't strong enough and smart enough to beat europeans, that's not europeans fault, they were doing what any other civilization has done before them. Europeans don't need to justify actions of the past ( and i will never give excuse for things i haven't done ). We all and you more than the others need to learn history and understand it to make sure all these bad things don't happen again. Natives weren't unite and some did fight with europeans, how can you justify this ? Is there a good or a bad side when in fact natives were in both side ? Stop being stupid and judge the past with your actual "moral" view.

You have a quite nice video here. Nice problem analysis and conclusions. I live in Mexico and constantly visit CDMX to work or to visit my family, and the most urging problems are environmental in deed. But as a society and mainly the wealthy people we want neither to reduce water misuse nor to reduce sewage production by new tech. In certain way, we are the future of the big cities around the world if they don't take action sooner. I hope you accept the need to change before you reach this level. We are trying to revert it, but it's hard and expensive.
@ArtoriusBravo7 жыл бұрын
As a bonus fact, the Popocatepetl (the active volcano near the city, yeah, try to pronounce that name Lol) if it explodes, it takes with him like 10 million people. So, he better keeps erupting to vent pressure. In the Myths, he is a warrior that guards over the dead body of his lover, the Iztaccihuatl (the other volcano, also good luck pronouncing that).
@TheDailyConversation7 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your insights and am glad multiple CDMXers feel I gave a fair representation. On my visit, I would've loved to have more time to explore and meet more people. I did make the most of my time and saw a lot. In terms of the volcanoes, lol, now you know why I didn't go near those pronunciations-I had a hard enough time with Tenochtitlan ;)

You should definitely make a video about Metro Manila. It's one of the top 5 megacities in the world in terms of population and Manila has the highest population density in the world, but it still stays under the radar for the most part. The metro area is bustling, sprawling, and growing quickly. But there are so many problems that I'd love for you to talk about and highlight, from the 3 million+ people living in poverty, to our messy transport system and traffic, pollution of the Pasig river and air, lack of urban planning and the sprouting of condominiums everywhere, the drug war and the flooding problems that still haven't been fixed. We're even experiencing flooding as we speak from a typhoon but little progress has been made to sort out the city's drainage and flood problem. Can't wait to see more of this series!

Three Crosses here we go again..US is a country made out of immigrants. No one but the native Americans belong. The reason why so many families (not so much now despite the media)go to the US is because they want their children to have secure future. They do it for their children!! They don't risk their lives to take jobs! They risk their lives for the future of their children.

+Chris Guzman I'm a 2nd generation Mexican-American, and I kind of disagree with you. You're right, the U.S is a nation of immigrants that all came here to make this country as amazing as it is, but now it's the most powerful country in the world with laws in place that say you are welcome here, so long as you come in a legal manner. Mexico is a country that could be full of prosperity and opportunities for its citizens, but as long as the corrupt government continues with its horrendous ways, nothing will change. I know undocumented immigrants that are hard working and only wish to help their families, but I also know some that feed off government resources and do not deserve to be here. More than half of undocumented immigrants are from Mexico. What has the Mexican government done to try and better the lives of its beautiful people, so they don't consider the choice of risking their lives to cross the border? Nothing. Mexico needs to stop depending on the U.S. The U.S also receives a major work force from immigrants working in agriculture. I live in California, in the Salinas Valley (the Salad Bowl of the world), and there is a strong presence of hard working Mexican immigrants that work 10+ hours per day in horrible conditions. There are ways the U.S benefits, but there are also ways the U.S is negatively affected. It's such as complicated issue.
