There is a lot of antisemitism in Mexico, but it certainly doesnt take center stage in public life. Just take Vicente Fox, former mexican president, saying Claudia is not a true mexican bcz she's jewish. That example may seem like the exception to the rule but you'd be surprised to find how many think like that here. Why Claudia Sheinbaum won the presidency in Mexico, as the first woman in all of North America: 1) Those who think it was because of social programs ARE WRONG. Never before have the real incomes (ALREADY DEFLACTED - discounting inflation) of the deciles of the population with the lowest incomes risen. The Mexican government promoted a comprehensive salary policy and boosted employment and here is the data that proves it. The first reason is that the purchasing power of the poorest and the middle classes rose in a way that has not happened in a long time. 2) The second reason has to do with systematic expansion and support to key segments of the population: medical residents, social workers, single mothers and of course older adults. There is social support with laser shooting and they responded to the vote. 3) The third reason, which is perhaps one of the most important, is that people want strong governments and they want checks and balances, but they want intelligent opponents, and in Mexico, there is no opposition, much less intelligent. There was not even a candidate for the presidency because the president removed her from CDMX and took her to where he wanted her. People counterbalance when they see that there is opposition but the majority of the population wants the PRIANRD to no longer exist. 4) people know that many of these parties have migrated to the ruling party, but they follow the principle that politics is choosing between inconveniences. 5) The fifth reason is that people continue to identify violence and drug trafficking as consequences of the past and not as causes of the present. 6) The sixth reason is that political elections are only the result of the deep reflection of classism, hidden racism and a reality of fifties longing for the Mexico of the privileged that no longer exists. 7) and the seventh reason - one of the most notable - is that with AMLO the rich became richer and the poor became less poor. As a person who worked at one of the voting stations in Mexico city, as a person who just voted on June 2 and as a person who was aware of Claudia Sheinbaum before she was Morena's candidate for president, president Sheinbaums' (feels good to finally be able to write this) cultural background never came into play. To us mexicans, Claudia Sheinbaum is simply MORENAs' candidate for the presidency and now the newly elected president...., that's all. Yes we realize that she is the first female president ever of Mexico, but her cultural background never came into play. I say cultural background, because she is not jewish since she doesn't practice judaism. As I have heard from a few videos of rabbis over the last year, judaism and zionism are *not* the same thing. From the same videos, I was told that judaism is a religious calling and Sheinbaum does not practice judaism. Consequently, Sheinbaum is not jewish, if I am going to take the word of rabbis. Sheinbaum is just another mexican who has a rather unusual last name. It was not until yesterday, that I realized that Claudia Sheinbaums parents are first generation mexicans. As a former Mexican legislative employee i can tell you that what the United States need as a first step is to change the election politics... we have no "lobbying" in Mexico in fact it would be considered corruption by Mexican laws... second thing they need to change is... making every vote have the same value... if winning California means more that some random state is that fair? aren't we all equals? yeah that system would never fly in Mexico or most parts of the world.
